Squadwork and leadership....even more important on vehicle centric maps

There is something I've seen in the last couple months that I want to bring up. Basically I've seen a growing trend where on vehicle maps like Dnipro, Lutsk, Rolling Thunder, Rivne, Dnister and Highway to Hell we are seeing a lack of functional squads.(TG leadership) This in turn causes a much less appealing gameplay environment on these maps.

Vehicle maps are not like infantry maps where you can have only one squad using teamwork and that squad can still have a lot of fun. A bunch of pubs zerging around can easily throw a lot of action your way and give the appearance of an organized group.

In vehicle maps though this doesn't work. They will trickle into flags...a tank here....tank plus apc there...3 infantry....2 snipers. Outside of going for the flag closest to the enemy UCB its never anything that will test a good squad. Gets dull doesn't it? We need to start rectifying this. Vehicle maps are so much more enjoyable when you have functional squads with SLers that keep their squad together and use the combined arms nature of the map. Also when a squad stays alive and keeps pressure up for continous flag assaults it makes for highly intense squad on squad action.

I like infantry maps as much as the next guy but my favorite moments in the bf series are on these vehicular maps when your defending against a major push by a good squad using multiple assets at their disposal. An infantry squad moving in with two tanks and a sniper up high for support....not to mention jets and choppers buzzing around. Its an epic feel I never get anywhere else. As already stated though its starting to become a rarity lately that I will get that feeling. It used to happen all the time in the earlier days of POE2. Now though too many people are dropping leadership positions or messing around. I'm just as guilty of this as anyone else. Its a self defeating problem.

So ya...point of topic is lets see a lot more squadwork going forward on vehicle maps. These are the maps that need squads called teamwork and Learn TG. If we get at least 3 functional squads per side then we will be in very good shape.

    Here! Here!

I'd like to also point out that a good commander is needed for when specialist squads are set up. Airborne teams especially need good directions or, left to their own devices, they are usually just circling the map looking for the next soft kill. Squads should feel able to call in proper air strikes rather than rely on the pilots alone to use their judgment and not place bombs too close to their formations, for example.

More often than I would like to admit, I find that I am placing bombs into the midst of blues where I thought I was lending a helping hand by hitting an armor column and thinking to myself after, "Nuts! That could have been coordinated a little better!"

QFT Mantis. Well said. I'll admit, I do not prefer SL'ing, I feel that I am far more beneficial in a support role (medic / chopper), and that I know there are better suited "leaders" than myself.

I think Rolling Thunder is a perfect map for combined arms, it isn't a monster map like Highway to Hell 64 or Guardian 64 (Still good maps though!) It's a nice, tight map that makes choppers extremely vulnerable to the AA, enemy chopper and tanks, and theres plenty of tank and infantry action to boot! I ALWAYS squad up with the prevalent SLs and lend eyes and support for the defense or offense of a flag while in the chopper on this map. Khaerus can attest to the hurt I can lay down on flag aggressors. I believe on one Rolling Thunder match, Santa, myself and a bunch of other TGs were putting the train station on lockdown for the entire match. Why? Because 4 of them were on the ground and myself and (i forgot which TG guy, sorry!) were in the chopper taking out approaching armor and choppers, while the 4 on the ground were mopping up infantry. As for nearby contested flags? Nothing a volley of hydras can't handle.

Additionally, I'm not one of those that stay in the air no matter what is happening on the map, if crap's hitting the fan and the squad needs help, I'm bailing out and assisting - like that one time when i was in the EF on Dnipro and I was in Mantis' sqd defending the power plant; I bombed the arty hitting their position and then had to bail when he called out that they were getting overrun by armor.

It's extremely frustating (and I am guilty of this as well) to see carrier or airstrip campers waiting for jets or choppers. What irks me more is the fact that the people that do get in choppers are 75% of the time not in the same squad. How is that going to be teamwork? You can't call or spot targets to your pilot or gunner!

It's disheartening that the pubbers that do join up don't want to put forth the teamwork effort and want the easy e-peen kills and scores.

I remember the first time I played POE2, when it came out on the TG servers. I could generally see larger TG squads i.e. 33rd, 12th, 5th and so on, usually split their squads into 2 or 3 smaller ones and have one or two pubbies i.e like me in there.

I found that although I always yearned for that true team play camaraderie, it helps to have a squad of guys focused on that already. After a time, I became braver to the point that I can start up a MEDICATED squad now and have TG'ers hop in 'en queue'. It taught me some of the basics and pushed me into coming on the TG site and reading the SOP's and forums for valuable insight.

That more than anything is what I find lacking now, the whole follow SL's orders or be kicked is almost an after-thought now. I have had ppl scream profanities at me for insulting them by insisting on team play values. Usually I can see Mantis a few rounds per night heading up a LEARN TG SQUAD, but less people than when I first ventured onto the POE server do this now. As I remember there used to be nights per week dedicated to teaching the TG way, these would be a welcome reprieve.

CO's are also largely missing even on 62 player full maps, they get elected, then do mostly nothing but self satisfying actions for a few minutes, before someone gets peeved and they get a warning and jump out of the CO seat, rinse, repeat. Only TG Co's and to some part the odd pubbie does anything outstanding, rinse, repeat.

Long May the FFTHFF(5th) live in our memories and our teamplay.
