Re: Retirement

Honestly, I think you old farts have forgotten what it is to be new and have no idea how to actually play PoE2 on the TG server.

People who are new need old vets to lead them. If you don't take the lead as a vet in a squad of unfamiliar names with no apparent leadership, you should expect your round to suck. I'm a very good squad leader, but I know that if I form a squad with a unique name, enforce a policy of teamwork (usually no sniper kits, period), and require squad mates to listen to if not also talk over VOIP, I usually have much more fun each round than if I just let nature run its course.

If someone gets separated from the squad or selects sniper when otherwise not requested I talk to the person first to see if they have a reasonable explanation like "Oops, I didn't see where I was." or "OK I'll go support as my next kit." I let them stay in the squad. If they none of this happens... they be getting a the boot. I won't have a rogue ruining the game for the rest of my squad mates, who are earning their place.

Re: Retirement

I think there's quite a few new players that are into the way we play and doing quite well. I've been part of a lot of good squads lately. I'm optimistic for the quality of play on the server.

And I need to start with AARs again and get some of these guys in print, as it were.

Mag, your heart is in the right place but maybe your brain isn't. This thread started about 2 weeks ago when I decided to quit POE2 after playing for a close to 1 year now, I have no problem talking to ppl, on the contrary I sometimes feel I am talking too much making ppl uncomfortable. While there might be the odd one out like you and Husky that come onto the TG server looking for a a good squad orientated setting most don't they just come here to kill and thats it.

I have lead scores of squads and I have been told every which way to go F myself because of my insistence on following the server rules. Now I am happy you have found a home, just like I did, but thats just it, you were looking for this kind of atmosphere, some ppl just aren't. When the bad out number the good, thats a good a time as any to mosey along. Even Husky just noted in a comment that he finds mostly the same bunch of ppl to play with to sift out the ass-hats.

So remember this is after months of thinking, not just something I came up with yesterday.

On another note, next weekend, the one after this one will be my final, I am asking if you guys could setup a night of Incursion so that I can get that out of my system before I retire. BTW I didn't mean to be disrespectful Magonushi, it just gets to me every time I think about why I am leaving something I love.

Re: Retirement

I generally think of visitors on the server as players that just haven't seen the light. I don't think they're thinking to themselves "I'm an asshat" - it's just that they know nothing other than vanilla BF2, pimp your stats, look out for #1 playing. It's a subtle distinction, but keeping that frame of reference really helps me keep my frustrations in check.

I've also been at this for going on 2 years now and know exactly what you're talking about, kill. After a prolonged period of give, give, give, you can get worn down. It's best to take a break and maybe come back in a while when you miss that lovin' TG feelin'... maybe when the new maps/goodies come out! We'll be here!

Reminds me of being a teacher. Sometimes it really wears on you and you really wonder what in the heck you are doing in this God forsaken, unthankful, make nothing job. You deal with parents on drugs, teens who dropout, teens who are pregnant, and kids wrapped up in the "now" generation. You try really hard to get them down the right path, but they just will not listen.
I remember my first year thinking that way and then something clicked. You can never expect anyone to thank you for the job you are doing and SHOULD never expect it. Teaching is not like it is in "Dangerous Minds" or "Freedom Writers." You should do it because you know it is right and you know you are doing what you can to change people's lives.
So I focus on giving kids the opportunity to succeed and relish in the fact that I am there to help them if they want help which many do not. I often can be the one adult in there lives that has given them the opportunity and hope to succeed. Every once in a while, they take it and even more rare is the thanks you get from those students.
I know this is about not playing a stupid game and teaching is real life, but it connects in a way if you think about it. If we, the teachers, let ourselves be deterred because we do not get the instant gratification in the form of thankful students, then we are failing ourselves and most importantly the students. Instead, teachers should find strength from inside themselves knowing they are doing good, even if they do not see the effect they are having.
In the same way, you should not be looking for fun and excitement through other people's playing abilities or approach to the game. Instead, you should be looking for it through your OWN experiences. Play like you enjoy playing...like we all expect TG'ers to play and simply relish in that fact. Do not let what others are not doing destroy something you enjoy doing. I know I do and eventually, I find that those who are not following orders will simply start following orders because they notice how much fun YOU are having and how much fun it is when you know what you are doing in this game.
Kind of like when Project shoots me when I am on his team...I do not like it, but he seems to enjoy it so much that I eventually learn to enjoy it.

You couldn't be more wrong. Why, as a matter of fact, I wake up every morning, take a look at myself in the mirror in my tighty-whities, raise my hands to the sky, and proudly proclaim, "I.... am an asshat!"

Then I carpool to work with a douchebag and an effin' newb. The douchebag wears his polo shirt with the collar flipped up. And we never let the effin' newb drive.

Man O man, just when I think you couldn't possibly top yourself, you go ahead and do just that. Kudos Rick.

@Gator, I understand what you are saying but it doesn't apply, because POE is a "team" thing where everyone you interact with is supposed to be after the same goal. Teaching is different, because your goal is to teach, their goal is to learn, and you both have different end goals.

@ Whiskey, there are tons of asshats that frequent the server, ppl that continuously TK even after a warning, and chat. Jihad jeepers, Bad Language, UCB Campers, I don't know about anyone else but when I started playing BF2, I was appalled at the lack of co-ordination, given that all the tools to co-ordinate are built into the game. I played for a few months and never once did i say wow this is how its supposed to be. I played once on TG and that was it for me.

Noted I didn't have Euro Forces so I could only play vanilla and Armored Forces but I would try to get on and play whenever i could. I should add that that is no mean feat as TG rounds can last for an hour outright. And I have no way of knowing if the next map would be playable for me. No one had to tell me twice to follow orders.

Re: Retirement

What's wrong with some shameless advertising? It's not like their going to advertise in the PR forum. That's just silly!

Kilevvri1, you'll retire for a bit, play some other games, probably keep a hand in the forums. Then one day that itch will come back, or you'll be on TS just chatting with the fellas and someone will ask you if you're interested in a scrim, or something, and you'll get back into it, heart and soul reawakened with the burning passion that is TG.

Re: Retirement

Well I won't be online tonight and Friday night as I have some work for a client to put in. So Sat and Sunday night will be my final nights playing POE2/BF2. I just saw that BF3 will be out in Summer 2008 so the next time I play a Battlefield game will be then. I might venture into TF2 but who knows.

Anywho, I just wanted to let you guys know so I can go up against my favorite adversaries and play with my most trusted SM's. Luckyshot I hope you will be there cause for a while when I just started playing POE you were almost always my SL. So pile on on Sat & Sun and give me a fond farewell or a good ass-whuppin. Also if someone could get Santa to make a stop by it would be nice to play against him again before I call it quits.

Its been Great Games most of the time, but thats a given when its TG.

See you out there.
