Ikonic what the heck!?!
Blue Nile annihilation man.....that map is so lop-sided! One Cobra and you had it with no other air to hinder your raping of me. I think you only killed me on that map. We need to have a Ukrainian chopper on that map to make it fair or get rid of that one. I think with no air it would actually be a decent map.

Re: Ikonic what the heck!?!
I was gunning with Ikonic and it did seem rather lop sided. Part of the reason though was due to us always trying to disable your AA as fast as possible. I even hopped out a few times to capture the bases where your mobile AA spawned when no one was guarding them.

Re: Ikonic what the heck!?!
That is the real issue. People tend to expect to use air to fight air but in this map and maps like Crimea, you have to use your ground assets. Use and guard the shilka! Use the Sa7 pick up kit. Or if in a pinch, use the tanks main cannon as I get tons of chopper kills that way.

Re: Ikonic what the heck!?!
Understood all your comments thanks. I just think that BOTH sides should be similarly equipped. Well actually I don’t think that!!!!! I think that if one side is going to have a strong air asset then the other side should be balanced with the appropriate anti-air capability.
Maybe Blue Nile does and we just did not utilize it properly. I have found that in all my experience with POE and all BF2 mods that against a good chopper pilot such as Mantis or Ikonic etc it’s very hard to kill with a SAM/Tank or AA battery. Or maybe I just suck at it. But I have hit choppers repeatedly POINT BLANK with tank rounds only to get wiped out at the completion of their gun pass. That’s an old issue never fully fixed in any mod. Not sure why. I also have had little luck with the shoulder fired SAMS my self.
Blue Nile was a complete annihilation last night and was not balanced. I think that IF the Ukrainian side was very focused on chopper suppression as a whole and coordinated as whole it would have been better but that just goes back to the Command and Control thread I started a week ago. We had no good command. There was a commander but he never issued any orders! All the squads were running around like rats with Ikonic and Magnushi smashing them as such.
You know after reading this thread and thinking about all your comments the bottom line is we failed to use our assets properly. We failed at communications. We failed in command and control. We failed to suppress air and hold strategic points. I guess it was just one of those nights……

Re: Ikonic what the heck!?!
Anti-air is a bit of a thankless job, and it's rarely played properly. The SAM pickup kits aren't super effective if you judge success as the number of kills you get. On the other hand, if they are VERY effective if you consider a smoking helo, turning tail and retreating for repairs to be a success, then it's VERY effective. Remember - even if you're out of ammo, you still get a lock and give pilots a little panic.
Also - for both the Shilka and pickup SAM kit, you need to use stealth. You need to have cover, and you need to stay hidden. For the SAM pickup, don't fire if the pilot's looking right at you - you may get one hit, but you'll quickly get hosed w/ the minigun. With the Shilka, it's best to have some structure near you so you can keep it between you and the helo as it makes it's strafing runs. Just tear the helo up once it goes by and you're not in his crosshairs.
actually - that goes for just about everything in the game - infantry, armor, etc.... try only shooting at things when you're not in the target's cross-hairs....

Re: Ikonic what the heck!?!
lmao blood, how was that 4-35 score?
Couple things I noticed that was happening during the match that shouldn't have happened:
The SA-7 was NEVER used to shake us up. As Whiskey said, even locking on us without ammo shakes up a chopper pilot and makes them take corrective action. It is an excellent area denial and psychological weapon.
The 2 shilkas were used in a solo manner. The most effective way of using the Shilkas on Blue Nile is to pair them together near some cover (but not next to each other where a salvo of hydras can wipe them out). We can only engage and effectively evade 1 shilka at a time. Throwing the SA-7 in the mix will make us think twice of going in that particular area. For example, Bane and a lot of the 33rd like to establish a Shilka and the SA-7 around the village.
The Ukrainians did not actively go for the US main! If you can't stand the chopper, deny access to it completely! Only one time did a squad go for the US main. We had lost it at a vital time as well, we had just recently got shot down and when they were lowering the flag, the cobra spawned. A person JUMPED IN THE COBRA, went in the gunner position and then proceeded to JUMP OUT OF THE COBRA when i fired a SRAW into it. I then hi-tailed it to the chopper gun and blew him away when he was on the flag. The US flag also goes down very slowly, so having an entire sqd on the flag is most effective.
---
Symmetrical maps get very old; Granted, it's the most balanced, but takes less teamwork and effort to win as opposed to an asymmetrical map like Blue Nile and Crimea (32). The weapons and tactics are there in the map, they are just more subtle. Asymmetrical maps emphasizes better use of the environment, weapon platforms and communication. None of those 3 were apparent last night.
Theres plenty of AA on Blue Nile - 2 Shilkas, the SA-7, DOZERS, Tanks...
I'm sorry, but the ukrainians let themselves get hosed by the cobra by not employing an effective defense against it.Last edited by ikonic; 09-30-2007 at 09:12 PM.

Ikonic........I agree with what you have said. It also made me think about Symetric vs Asymetric maps. Now that I think about it it does employ a certain challenge that adds to the game play.

Re: Ikonic what the heck!?!
I think your post pretty much sums it up. It seems that rounds which are won by whatever team I am on comes down to employing an effective defense and maintaining your defense throughout the game instead of the lone wolf approach.
Take yesterday and our defense of Camp. Yall had me go pick up the SA-7 and from that point the choppers were shaken and changed there approach. It helped to allow us control of that point for the remainder of the map. I may not have racked up kills but hitting the chopper and watching it run away while smoking was very satisfying indeed.

Re: Ikonic what the heck!?!
You did Berry-Berry Good with the SA-7 last night! I got tired of getting mowed down by the choppers, so I asked Husky to just go to the Guardhouse(?) base, take the AA kit, and come back. With him as AA and the rest of the squad as AT (with 1 support), we were able to hold Camp for the rest of the round and keep US with a foothold on the island as the other flags kept falling around us. We lost the round, but not the flag!

My new map is similar in each side having different tools for combat but without attack choppers or arty. I will post it in our news soon but lets say that good transport chopper pilots will be in high demand.
