Discussion: Battlefield 2 / Battlefield 2 - Point of Existence Discussion - Commander Tips - So tonight was my first time trying out commander with the number of players over
So tonight was my first time trying out commander with the number of players over 20. The first map I COed was Orel followed by Lutsk and finally Sambir. Now I'm looking for feedback on my overall command and tips for improvement.
For a little background on Orel our Ukrainian team kept losing tonnes of men trying to gain church without any success. I took over and directed 2 squads to defend backyard, 1 to defend the west farm (think that's what it's called.) And then the other squads to attack lumber mill in an attempt to avoid the killing ground that was church. I believe as a result west farm came under heavy attack so I ordered one of the attacking squads to west farm. This left me with a single squad to attack lumber mill, church, or the eastern base (can't recall the name.) I tried swapping around squad duties so that the squad with pure TG-12th guys were the attackers, but the switch happened too late and too slowly to change the outcome of the round. With little time remaining and the score horribly lopsided the 12th finally took that damnable mill and the round ended with us finally securing bleed but ultimately losing.
The next round went much better at the start. We swept though all the bases except Castle and the northernmost capturerable. At this point I put a single-man squad on beach (whoever that was you deserve a frigging medal for your discipline and performance), I assigned a squad to cover just outside castle, one to watch southern village, one to watch over east farm. By the time I had assigned all this, 12th took the northern capturable so I assigned them to what I felt was going to be the hardest defensive job, that flag which they had just captured. Things were looking good. We had a good lead in points and had uber bleed.
Unfortunately the squad I assigned to contain castle kept refusing to follow my orders (rather than contain, they simply charged in, despite it being very well defended. This wasted men and left the door open for them to escape), and at several points had to talk with the 12th about kicking their SL from his post. While doing all this I failed to notice that the squad on south village had moved out of position. With castle not contained and south village undefended the enemy soon moved in and flipped the flag.
Fearing 12th would be cut off I pulled them back to help retake southern village which they did, but as soon as this had happened, beach was hit hard and fell as well. For the rest of the round I split the squads between trying to take back beach (which apparently is extremely hard) and defending southern town and the east farm. We lost and recaptured farm a few times and finally reacquired beach before the game ended in a loss.
Finally on round 3 I focused on avoiding trying to take church and instead focused on holding the bases around it. I placed 12th on southwest farm and another on southeast farm and a squad on the rear northern bases to keep the supply column open (this proved to be a more difficult task than I had first thought, since church sent most of its resources at the northeast farm.) Control shifted back and forth until the southern bases both fell. At this point I assigned all squads but one to try and take out church with the remaining squad holding off any pressure from southeast farm. At that point everything just broke down. Squads started getting spread out and unfocused and even the 12th got pinned down on the mountain directly north of church. We eventually took church, but by this time we were in horrible condition in terms of points and had lost a lot of squad cohesion. In frustration I resigned leadership and began practicing my skills in the froggie and the appeared to zerg to an end.
So for all the SLs and SMs, who bit the bullet and followed my novice orders, thank you. I think I might try command out more since it really is quite amazing to see a squad not only follow your orders but perform beyond your expectations. There was plenty of that tonight.
And for anyone that noticed anything wrong, please let me know. There must have been at least a few problems since each round ended in a loss.

I have found that being commander is really rather hard if done right. It is a thankless and under rated job. When i have attempted it, there was so much going on it made my head swim. I was constantly trying to come up with plans to direct squads while gathering intel and adjusting to enemy movement and squad ability. Its a hard and thankless job for sure if done right.

Well as I was on the German side for Sambir I could say you did pretty well for everywhere but church, especially South Farm.

I intentionally left church alone thinking it was too heavily defended and would cost too many resources to attack. In hindsight I should have taken church out even if it meant sacrificing 1 or 2 other flags. Oh well, like I said before, I'm new to the whole CO thing but it really is needed more often than it gets (correctly) played.
