Re: Would be a interesting addition especially for large kashan like maps

Ah mortars are all well and good for a small map where you don't want massive collateral damage. But in a big open landscape such as Kashan... It's well within reason to have larger long range weapons systems. Look at it this way. No matter how big the PR map it's still shrunken reality. You would not be within reasonable driving or running distance of enemy airstrips, helicopter staging areas, or an armor depot in reality. PR is shrunken reality. You don't need the 155 shell to have real life blast radius or power, it needs to fit within the reality of PR which scales everything back while keeping it within the realm of being believable. Tactically speaking aritllery is an aspect of the battlefield that's really missing or half arsed into the game as it stands.

To put it philosophically: "If a 155mm shell falls in the desert, does anybody not find it cool?"

Re: Would be a interesting addition especially for large kashan like maps

A tourney I play in which compiles its own mod for each campaign uses two types of mobile arty (TOS-1 and MRLS on T-72 Chassis), both with a simple point and fire action, hitting F11 to get a TV view of rocket on route (non guided)... limited rockets per "magazine" and long "magazine" reload and unit respawn time keeps it from being overpowering. If a large 64P map is being played, thats what is used and it works very nicely indeed. We've also used mortars, fully working, very nice as pickup kits for use on smaller maps where there may be no arty... Oh and just for good measure, the BF2 version of the Javelin AT launcher that I have tried is a pretty sweet bit of kit aswell

It's hard wishing things like this to make it into your favourite mods, especially when you know they have been done, work fine and worst still... you've tried them out :P

we tried both MLRS and javelin AT but they had various bugs and issues when trying to make them realistic that we have been yet able to resolve...

eventually PR will have an artillery system and a few other long range surprises

That's what I like to hear, the ability to reach out and touch someone

Long times make it less practical but more fair, shorter reloads makes it more practical but less fair. Maybe have it shoot off 3 - 4 rounds in a minute but then you'd have to wait about 2 - 3 minutes to burst again. That means you do have the ability to correct fire before your cool down or to clear out an area for advancing troops.

Now another good use of arty would be a secondary ammo for smoke. If you're having trouble running from bunker to bunker in Kashan, just call down some smoke and enjoy the weather ;D So many possibilities for new strategies with on-field arty.
good point and night illumination.........that would be cool too on maps like bi-ming even though that isn't played at all.......even for POE it would be cool.

The MLRS? Please. May as well mod in tactical ICBMs while you're at it for all the unbalancing such a weapon system would bring.

If the MLRS is shooting the standard M26 rockets (which have a range of about 20 miles), then expect a rain of about 650 little anti-personnel/anti-armor bomblets which scatter upon the warhead detonating in mid-air. An MLRS's full payload is designed to neutralize a grid square.

...I think a 60mm (81mm, tops) mortar would be a lot more balanced. Add in a mortarman kit and you're good to go.

For that matter... add in some semi-realistic heavy machine guns. I loved how Red Orchestra implemented the machine guns, complete with barrel changes. Think about it. You could have the machine gunner and an assistant machine gunner. The AG can deploy a tripod in strategic locations to allow the machine gunner to mount the gun and have extremely accurate long-range fire.

Yeah, HMGs would be a really nice feature. At the very least something like a 249 that can only be fired when prone.

Like the system they had in Bf1942 where people took pictures and the arty could actually see what they were shooting, that would be nice

i was about to say... bf1942 had a decent artillery setup. some sort of modified system of that would be great, and promote teamwork.
