Re: Pre-AAS

Yeah I know very well what BF2 was like, and I got a quick reminder last week when I spent a total of about 10 hours playing AIX. I just thought that AAS was what it was called in BF2 when the gameplay entailed assaulting (but usually not securing) flags, and that PR2 made AAS2 which was the capturing in order.

I can't stand the vanilla method of flag capping. I got sick of it again after just a few hours of AIX. There is really no overall point to the game, other than to enjoy the weapon kits and vehicles and faster respawn time (dont get me wrong, I played bf2 for countless hours and loved it, and it was the first thing to break my 5 year CS addiction). But it always seemed that someone's personal score, mine included, was more important than capping flags and being overall victorious. From the first round I played on PR, I have not gone back to vanilla or any other mods, except for the brief foray into AIX.

AIX was sweet. It was fun to play with all the new weapon kits, and to fly planes again, and to be able to get a sniper rifle and go on your own and pwn and not feel guilty about it like I do when I occaisonally pick one up in PR.

But, the AAS seems to have so simply changed the game for the better. Direction? purpose? these are all things the jedi needs.

Re: Pre-AAS

Keep in mind that AIX has a ridiculous number of flags, more so than vanilla. It wasn't all that bad, as Lucky said, in PoE. No AAS has its good and bad points, but I still prefer it.

I realize I strayed off-course, and I'm not even sure what point I was trying to make. I guess it's that using the whole "Supply Lines" and "Front Lines" thing is a bit odd, considering that attacking the rear area and disrupting enemy C3 and supplies are important goals in warfare.
Just a small point here that AAS in PR doesn't eliminate attacks in the rear areas for the purpose of disrupting the enemy's advance or hitting their commander assets. This happens all the time. Just look for discussions revolving around sabo squads and how in some cases this behavior can unbalance some of the maps.

I did a lot of vanilla BF2 play with GC and my biggest complaint about the normal flag capping system is the difficulty in doing defense if an organized team sends most of their assets at a flag (i.e. you can't defend everywhere). With a system that encourages you to attack the least defended flag this leads to flags being exchanged often and IMO really encourages attacking more than defending. The only time defense made a lot of sense was when you captured a flag which had significant assets at it (armor, air, commander assets in particular).

I love the AAS system because it focuses the battle, makes defense a viable tactic, and still allows room for sabo type activities which are not without a cost.
