Re: Free Battlefield Game Coming? (Hoax?)

Advertising would be fine if it would affect the price of the games. The publishers like to have it both ways though.

This is my "depressed stance." When you're depressed, it makes a lot of difference how you stand. The worst thing you can do is straighten up and hold your head high because then you'll start to feel better. If you're going to get any joy out of being depressed, you've got to stand like this. ~Charlie Brown

Re: Free Battlefield Game Coming? (Hoax?)

They need to make money from all the illegally downloaded games they lose out on, advertising from other companies help out, lol. Seriously though I do think this was one of the thoughts that went through their heads and the reason advertising is showing up more and more into the games we buy. Be nice if they could remove all advertising for games that are bought and paid for and keep advertising and a lot of it for the illegal versions of the games. Maybe people would slow down on downloading illegal copies. That was said sarcastically cause that would never happen.

BATTLEFIELD HEROES LEADS THE WAY FOR EA’S NEW
PLAY 4 FREE BUSINESS MODEL

Unique Cartoon Shooter Introduces a New Way to Play Battlefield

Munich, Germany, January 21, 2008 – At the Digital, Life, Design Conference (DLD) in Munich, Electronic Arts Inc., (NASDAQ: ERTS) today unveiled Battlefield Heroes™, an all-new Play 4 Free cartoon-style shooter that will bring classic Battlefield gameplay to an all new mass audience. Available for download at www.battlefield-heroes.com this summer, Battlefield Heroes is EA’s first title that is offered completely for free, and features a built-in matchmaking system to ensure that players of equal skill are paired together for fair play. Developed by DICE in Stockholm, Battlefield Heroes is leading EA’s new web-focused free to download, free to play business model which generates revenue through advertising and micro-transactions. With zero barriers to entry, now anyone can be a hero on the battlefield!

“Online gaming garners a massive audience,” said Gerhard Florin, EVP Publishing Americas-Europe at EA. “People want to play games in new ways, with easier access that is quick to the fun. With Battlefield Heroes, EA brings its first major franchise to North America and Europe with a new distribution model and pricing structure adapted to the evolving way that people play.”

Battlefield Heroes is a brand new game from the team behind Battlefield 1942™ and Battlefield 2™. It’s fun cartoon-style graphics and gameplay caters to players of all skill levels. It is easy to pick up and play but with robust character customization and a deep online meta-game, gamers can spend hours building up their characters and conquering the world.

“We put a different twist on this Battlefield game going with the cartoon-style graphics and gameplay,” added Ben Cousins, Senior Producer at EA DICE. “There’s something here for all types of players — be it our core Battlefield fans or casual gamers. With the new online model, we will continually add new content to keep the game fresh and keep players engaged, while integrating player feedback in real time. As a game developer, it is such a cool new way to make games.”

Battlefield Heroes will be released for the PC as a free download in summer 2008. This product is not yet rated by PEGI or ESRB. For more information on EA DICE, please visit www.dice.se or www.ea.com.

Re: Free Battlefield Game Coming? (Hoax?)

EA is a slap in the face, plain and simple. I am very angry over the Battlefield Bad Company game also. I do not care for the idea that US soldiers are being portrayed as greedy thieves after gold. It also is a very over done story since it dates back to Kelly's Heroes and later to Three Kings. EA has done nothing but by good game companies and turn them into the same old EA crap. If I buy another game from EA, it will have to be something revolutionary and a total 180° turn from what they seem to be doing now.

Re: Free Battlefield Game Coming? (Hoax?)

Hopefully BF3 will be a nice step up fromBF2 engine-wise, but the gameplay will probably be the same old vanilla smacktardery. I still say that the PR devs need to plant someone inside EA to steal the engine and get cracking so they can release at least a beta PR for BF3 alongside the game release.

General Information:
# 2 Armies: National Army vs. Royal Army, All stereotypes used for comic look
# At release, 2-3 maps with more rolled out in updates
# Pick one character and you level him up through the game.
# Maps do not have insertion points, and the game chooses where to put you on the battlefield, although maps are a lot smaller than regular Battlefield maps.
# Known Weapons: Sticky Bombs, Rocket Launcher
# Taunts and death-freeze-cam included

Modified Conquest Mode:
# At the start of each round each team has 2 flags and 100 tickets
# Killing enemies reduce tickets, but if you hold more flags then your enemy you receive a multiplier giving you more tickets.
# You can win even by killing less enemies and owning more flags
# Killing enemies is less important than capturing and holding flags

Vehicles:
# Observed vehicles: Spitfire, M4 Sherman, PzKfzIV
# The character size relative to the vehicle differs quite a bit. Comparable to "an adult on a bobby car".
# Planes have no bombs, used mainly for dogfights

Abilities:
# "I Eat Grenades" Ability - Throw back 7 grenades at once
# Life-Points Boost
# Inflammable Ammo

Match Making:
# Play with level equal players, but not 1:1 Ex: Level 2s could play on a level 1 server. Rule seems to be "level X ±"

Re: Free Battlefield Game Coming? (Hoax?)

Free crap so cant be so bad. I dont mind downloading it and playing it a few times, good for a laugh maybe.

The whole micropayment thing sounds like you could get an advantage over others in exchange for paying money.
Given that EA had a similar sort of idea with unlocks in BF2, this seems quite likely but that wasnt a massive bias as a I remember just a niggly thing

However I remember that encouraged teamkilling to get the fancy new weapons..

Re: Free Battlefield Game Coming? (Hoax?)

I would actually pay for this if we kept the weapons forever. I can only use a pre-paid visa, and monthly subscriptions dont really work out all that well
