Its just like a motorcycle.. 80% of your braking power is in the front wheel.

If you really want to stop, you use the front brake. If your starting to indo.. (rear wheel lifting off of the ground) you are at the limit of your braking potential.. and need to shift your weight towards the rear. A rear brake only on the other hand will only allow you to skid into whatever object you are trying to avoid.

This however only comes in handy when riding street.. When riding on dirt a back brake is a must..
