Re: Decent internet
I agree with the previous sentiment that you either need a more determined hamster or a bigger electrical voltage to increase said determination.

Re: Decent internet
Well, my internet just bit it. Hard. I no longer have a dns, as do none of the desktops in mah house. The one laptop works, so this dosent warrant the purchase of a shiny new hamster

Re: Decent internet
What does "ipconfig /all" report? That's the first step I take in diagnosing the connection, after ping by IP address fails. It will report what it thinks is the DNS servers and your local address.
If you want to share a router with file sharing, you need a gaming router. That's the marketing name for a router that does traffic shaping, sometimes called quality of service (QoS), letting game packets "cut the line" and go out ahead of all other traffic. I use a Linksys with custom firmware to allow me to do traffic shaping. (It has the "wondershaper" script built in.)

Re: Decent internet
http://192.168.1.1/transtat.htm This should be your modem's line statistics page. Use this guide to make sence of that page http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,17339682?hilite=
is a good place to start. I have Verizon 3/768k which runs nice now but it wasn't so at first. DSL is very sensitive to distance the further away the worse your numbers will be on that screen. I had to get verizon techs out to my house because my modem showed horrible line stats but they came out and got it fixed. Good line stats are the most important when talking DSL but so is the data path you take through Verizon. They have 2 paths one is interleve which helps people with poor line stats but adds a lot of latency which is bad for gaming the other is "fast" and if your line stats are good enough they will switch you over to that at no charge which will drop your pings by quite a bit. Also you may want to get a good router, I got a nice D-link router made for gaming which will prioritize your gaming packets over any other traffic so you wont get horrible latency when someone is downloading somthing. |
