Re: PR versus ARMA

Actually, you CAN hear enemies talking, and its really badass. Just check out some of the shack tactical videos, some of them even have enemy soldiers begging to surrender after being cornered, its great ^_^

Arma VON is very impressive considering its just an addition added in a patch (although it was supposed to ship with the game, but it doesnt make it any less impressive). Its bugs are worked out and in-game (no the breifing screen) it works almost flawlessly!

There is even changes in volume depending on whether your character is talking locally or on the radio. Examples:

On GROUP channel, you can speak only to the members in your squad. HOWEVER, you will still be heard by non squad members, but your voice will be in a quiet volume, because your character is talking normally over a "radio" to your squad members.

When you use the DIRECT channel, your character speaks very loudly and can be heard by everyone for a prety good distance, depending on obstructions and the environment/weather. Everybody will hear you, even enemies, and it will not broadcast over the radio.

Using VEHICLE channel uses the current vehicles internal radio system and broadcasts to only the players inside YOUR vehicle, although you can use DIRECT channel for this too for unimportant conversations in the back of helicopters before entering the ****.

Using SIDE channel talks to your entire team (which is spammed and is very annoying, picture that talkative commander in PR who wont shut up, now times that by 20+ players, you get the point )

Using GLOBAL talks to EVERYONE ON THE SERVER (!!!) which was a prety dumb thing to include, why they included that for public players I will never know, it should only be avaliable to admins... There is plenty of times where you will hear horrible screaching/breathing/someone eating cause they left their VON on and arent paying attention. Theres been several times where I had to rip my headphones off cause someone entered the server and tried to use their VON and it wasnt configured properly or something and the piercing screaches that came from their mic was deafening... still gives me the shivers thinking of it.... *shudder*

What Arma VON is greatly lacking is a channel for LEADERs. I have no idea why they didnt include that... Something simular to the commander channel in BF2 except all squad leaders and the commander can hear each other. Because of this, if you want any organised play you will NEED to use teamspeak.

Also whats a very strange decision is there is a volume slider for the different VON channels using "radio" which is great. But for whatever reason the LOCAL channel uses the same volume adjuster as ALL THE REST OF THE EFFECTS in arma... meaning a large majority of players cant hear the LOCAL channel well at all because of their effects volume being low, which COMPLETELY negates this awesome feature as most players dont use LOCAL von because of this simple oversight.

One thing arma players WONT mention to folks coming from PR that is prety important to know is the fact that realistic PVP arma is basically non-existant in a public form, so most players on the TG server just use SIDE or GROUP channel cause they are only ever fighting bots and there is little need for a high degree of organisation when fighting a predicatable computer. Not that fighting an AI is not challenging, but needing to change plans quickly to counter a sly intelligent manuever by the enemy is simply not a worry in Arma... your more worried about the AI making that amazing 300 meter headshot or miraculously seeing you through that thick brush.

I fell off my seat laughing at that one...
Anyways, 2 quick questions about Arma....
First, I own the game, but uninstalled ages ago, and have totally forgotten the answer to this question: Does the game require a CD key? I've lost my manual, and was curious if i need it or not... (mind you, this is NOT a question for CD-key hax or anything)
Secondly, with the new patch, have some of the animation kinks/glitches been worked out? I remember that soldiers seemed to have very blocky movements and animations....

Oh yeah, and a third question, is Evolution (or whatever that "ranking system" game mode was) still the most popular out there?

Re: PR versus ARMA

While Comm channels are always an issue in most of the games we play there is one feature I wish was easier to implement. The ability to mute a single VON/VOIP channel. If I were to use PR as an example, the ability to mute the commander at the touch of a button to hear my squad and the same to mute the squad to hear the commander. A nice easy key.

Re: PR versus ARMA

dam sounds like poor QC or play testing really, needs refining and a good server no doubt. Maybe they'll do better second time around

I like the way the mist builds gradually in this shot.

I think he is going to need a bigger scope!

Sorry fuzz, I got confused. It's not like you're hearing everything the enemy says, only situational things.

Re: PR versus ARMA

Something about that was off. Like he had his settings too high with low FPS, or the server was laggy, or something.

How about this for a video:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xvNBtd...eature=related

That is early footage from ARMA2, and was posted almost a year ago now, so think about how good it will look with even more work and tweaking.

Re: PR versus ARMA

Never have messed with the game might never will... at least until someone fixes the falling of cliffs in jeeps and then popping right back onto the road like nothing happened. Sounds I can deal with. Clumsy controls, I might write a few angry e-mails. The performace issues though, no NO way I will waste 30 dollars on something when I could be saving to 80 dollars for one year of SM status.

Re: PR versus ARMA

uuuummmmm.........Fighter, I've never had that happen in ARMA. That sounds like server lag, which would be due to someone's server, not the game.

And you can get the game for like $3.99 from e-bay, brand new and still shrink wraped in the box. But you seem pretty closed minded. So yeah, best stick with PR.

Re: PR versus ARMA

I ordered ARMA today. Really hoping to find a regular who'll show me the ropes on the TG server.

Re: PR versus ARMA

There are lots including myself that are happy to give you a quick tour. Make sure it is on Server2 though, with Domination gametype running. That gametype is more like PR, with respawns and other things. Co-op, which is on server 1, is not something you should just jump into and expect someone's undevided attention. In co-op, you almost always have 1 life to give, and it is much more hard core.

Also, it is mostly grownups playing, and if you jump in and goof off or start running strait for battle without listening to the plan, you are probably going to get kicked quick, because it can mean you get the rest of the guys killed.

Catch me on TeamSpeak or x-fire and I should be able to give you the tour.

You need to spend some time reading in the arma forums, especially the stickies, for more info, and the password to server2.

You really should spend a long time at this site as well:
http://dslyecxi.com/armattp.html

You will learn a lot and know what to expect, meaning you will have a lot more fun from the start and not have a bad time just running around confused.

And also for what Fuzz posted above, we are actually playing a lot more PvP lately. Played a few rounds tonight before I went to dinner, and may play some more later. We had like 16-18 people in the server.

Re: PR versus ARMA

I've seen a lot of coop gameplay in ARMA but is there a game mode similar to AAS in pr where you're actually fighting real players?

Re: PR versus ARMA

Yes, we played some last night. I only played 1 round before jumping out to eat dinner, but we do play it some.
Mission I played is just a random location somewhere on the island. It could be in the middle of a city or the middle of the forest, and a large blue square shows on everyone's map, and you need to move near there and kill everyone on the other team. Mission I played had a compound with some buildings and a barn in it.

There are also missions where you actually have a stated objective. Like there is 1 guy you are defending and he can't be killed by the other team. You get him to hide in a building, and defend the area while other team comes in and tries to find and kill him. Another one had some barrels of chemical weapons we had to defend and the other team had to blow up.

Also, the mission editor is one of the best parts about ARMA, so if you came up with some good missions, we could probably throw them in the rotation and give them a go.

Re: PR versus ARMA

Thanks for the link Bamboo, I've seen the guide before and I'll go through it in detail certainly before I head online with ARMA. I understand that ARMA has nowhere near as large a player base at TG as PR enjoys, is there a certain time I would be more likely to find the server well populated?

Look me up when you join up on the ARMA server. Just let us know you are a newbie and you'll get plenty of help....See you on Sahrani.

And by the way...if your on the fence on this title take a look at some of the recent AAR's from the ARMA forum. Amazing stuff happening over the last three or four weeks. We've got a great player base right now, and it's growing.
