Re: new found respect and enjoyment using the mini guns on the seahawk
Miniguns do have a short spin up time. They are powered by an electric, pneumatic or hydraulic motor, not the gas from fired ammunition, so they do require a short amount of time to get the barrel's rotation up to the speed of it's set rate of fire. This is different for different models, and generally not long at all. There was a gas powered model designed and tested, designated the XM133, but it was not given a contract or put into production.
EDIT: Here is a cool CG vid of how a minigun loads, fires and unloads the separate barrels simultaneously: http://www.pureluckdesign.com/videos/Gau17animation.wmv

Re: new found respect and enjoyment using the mini guns on the seahawk
I have to kinda disagree with you randy.
I say kinda because I know the enjoyment from wasting a bunch of infantry and vehicles on a minigun run and I totally agree that it's worth at least trying every time you get your hands on a hawk. Very addictive to say the least ![]() The only problem I really have is with the damage of the rounds. It's too low. You have to lay into a vodnik for 2-3 seconds before it starts smoking. Of course, if a vodnik lays into you for 2-3 seconds, you're going down or at the very least, you lose your tail rotor and must RTB. In reality that vodnik would have holes the size of my head in it before the gunner would have the chance to pull that trigger. Ramble ramble ramble, hats off to ya on doing some successful runs, though. Good to know we have more people discovering the gunship side of the Blackhawk and utilizing it to the fullest. |
