Now, I don't have anything against the sport of shooting. It is something people enjoy and (this being the U.S.) they have a right to pursue happiness. However, I see no other use for civilians to own handguns other than protection. And if, like in denmark, less civilians had access to these weapons, the need for a civilian to protect him/herself would be a lot less.
More leanient backround checks you say? All FFL dealers anywhere in the US have to perform a standard NICS backround check. This stops felons and other people with certain history from obtaining a gun. Please, elaborate the specifics on how different the checks are state to state...

Why does a person without a permit make you feel less safe? Even those states that require permits have pretty simple classes to get one. Do LEO's make you feel unsafe? Because there are certainly many of them that aren't as proficient as you might think. Many qualify only twice a year, and shoot hundreds of rounds instead of thousands a year....

Gun laws do not affect criminals at all. They don't follow the rules, and really don't give a girrafes butt! How does a restriction on guns prevent criminals from getting them? Well, it doesn't they will ALWAYS have access to guns, ALWAYS. Even in Japan where they have some of the strictest rules in the world, has a big issues with gun violence. Instead of buying them, the gangs just find plans for what they want, and mill it out with CNC machines...

Google, have you ever fired a gun? Just curious, this is a discussion, not an argument

Re: Life outside PR

In a few months I plan on taking an ~ 8 hour class that will allow me to carry a concealed weapon.....
All I have to have to be able to legally own a weapon is a hunting license. All I need to do to get a hunting license is to have a valid drivers license and some spare cash. Easy enough.

By the way, nice find caffeine.

Re: Life outside PR

Crime rate is dependent on more than just the availability of firearms or not. The economy has a lot to do with it as well.

The rate of serious crimes (not necessarily involving only firearms) declined steadily from 1993 to 2003 and has since started to rise again. This coincides with the rise in overall prosperity experienced in not only the US economy but the global economy as well, and it's subsequent decline over the past few years. With record oil prices affecting every single product on the market today, and with the record flooding occurring in the US Midwest this summer, things are only going to get worse this year and next as the farm economy (and therefore world food supplies) are devastated.

Well Sonic, if money is scarce (bad economy) and you don't have many options (poor education, no job, tough times, etc. etc.) the chances of you turning to desperate measures for survival go up.

Bad economy = higher unemployment. Higher unemployment = more people without income. People without income can't pay rent, buy groceries, etc. etc. Some people might see using violence as an acceptable alternative, or as a means of survival.

Society is always going to have crimes of passion - where the victim knows their assailant and it's personal. It is the economically tough times that makes the random violence increase generally, where the victim has no idea who their assailant is.

And this thread has totally strayed away from it's intent. Perhaps we should move the discussion to the sandbox forum where it is more appropriate.

Also, as Disposable said, the oil prices are very high. Many people simply can not pay or are in financial trouble due to the price of oil. This can often lead stealing oil which can result in the use of firearms.

Disposable, I see where your coming from. I just don't think I can really relate, maybe I'm too young or just too "non-ghetto". If I was poor I don't think I would have to "Survive" by fighting off constant attackers with a pistol.

LOL Sonic - I'd put you in the "too young" category.

To put all that crap I said a little differently: For some people, they reach a point where the end justifies the means.
