Re: Life outside PR
I've played paintball once. I got striped like a skunk, didn't hurt...the only shot that did hurt hit me in the hip, where I happened to have 2 sets of car keys in my pants pocket.

Re: Life outside PR
Paintball doesn't hurt (unless of course ur friend fires a shot into ur abdomen from 6 inches away...), but it's a real good adrenaline pumper if ur in a good game. I don't get to play as often as I like to. I hope it's the closest thing I ever get to real combat....(Hats off to military personnel)
Actually, like I previously posted somewhere, I tried joining the AF, but was denied. Would love to have been in the military.

I was playing paintball with three friends. We were just calling ourselves out whenever we wanted, had the velocity at ~390....so it hurt a bit. Well, I was in a bunker, had just taken a hit to the mask. Of course, I'm not going to call myself out. It would end the current round and I was in the prime realestate of the course. Since this was our home course, our own rules, we allowed people to call "time" once per game. It put the game on a 15 second hold, nobody moved, nobody shot. This allowed people to do a quick clean off of their goggles....well, I yelled "TIME TIME TIME!". I waited 2 seconds, hunkered down, and pulled off my goggles to wipe them off. Me, being stupid, decided to take a look and see where the shot had come from. Sure enough, another one came at me. Dead on, left eye.......they hadn't heard me call time. It's on to the ER. Can't see out of my left eye, it was pitch black. Can't see my pupil in the mirror cause my eye filled with so much blood. I get in and it took five hours for the blood to clear up so they could see if my retna was still intact or not. It was, but only barely. They held me for observation for another hour or so, and did surgery on it that night. My vision isn't 20-20 anymore in that eye, and my eye won't react to light. My pupil stays dialated permanantly. I take some eye drops daily that constrict them a bit, but not much. If I take any hit to the eye, even a soft one, it could detach completely. I am also at high risk of glaucoma now. It's not a good deal. It ruined my chosen career path. Now I am going to be a Wind Technician. The guys that go and work on the giant white windmills for $20/hr straight out of technical college (this is in Texas, so earnings aren't as high as in the far east/western half of the U.S....but neither is the cost of living)....and that's alot. I know a guy who's been working for AEP for four years. He started out doing what I will be doing, and now is a project superviser making $60/hr. I am actually glad the paintball incident happened to me. When one door closes, another one opens. Everything happens for a reason. These cliches have been now proven to me.

Re: Life outside PR
I have a friend with a similar circumstance....very unfortunate. I was declined medically as well. I tried for the Air Force Academy to be exact. Wanted to be pilot. But since that fell thru, I'm trying to get pilot's license on my own. Which is proving to be an extremely expensive endeavour.

Re: Life outside PR
There are many different jobs in the military. If you specifically go for a technical one or learn the skills for intelligence then you very likely may never see "front line action". But never say never cause you never know.

Re: Life outside PR
In addition to what skud said, you do realize that you have a greater chance of dying from more benign causes here than you do on active duty military service, dont you? Seriously, your chances of dying here from things like getting hit by a car are MUCH higher.

Re: Life outside PR
The Air Force ROTC unit I'm entering next year pays $15,000 a year for tuition alone. That doesn't include the monthly stipend, free textbooks and other stuff. Combine that 15 grand with my other financial aid and I get a free ride to college, and for someone who has to pay for almost all of it himself it's a lifesaver. The catch? I work for a minimum of five years with the Air Force, doing the exact same job I'd have as a civilian.
Not to mention everything Skud said... And Sonic, there are many aspects to working in the Military other than shooting at bad guys with guns. Think of the thousands of jobs that don't require fighting. The military needs Doctors, engineers, mechanics, IT professionals, hell even the Military Bands are filled with active duty officers.

Re: Life outside PR
True, I kind of see where you guys are coming from. I'm still pretty nieve. It just freaks me out when I see countless soldiers coming back in a body bag or in a wheel chair.
