Re: Angry Squad Leaders

The farthest I've ever gone is just being tense, raise the voice slightely, throw in some words like 'come on' or 'that's ridiculous'. I've dropped some F-bombs on TS against someone. And the rest of my swearing is because I die or lose a good kit. If I was every angry enough to be as some of you have described, I usually ragequit. If not I go over TS or under my breath.
That also gave me an idea, let's not try and rant over TS too. Because it's hard enough using TS and squad voip and hardly hearing your squad. You don't want some person talking unnecessary stuff into your speakers or headphones.
Unnecessary meaning that TS is teamspeak, not why people hate things or who saw the latest transformers movie. Go in public channel for that.

A question for anyone who's played with me: Do I swear too much for your liking?

No, but you were on the receiving end of quite a bit of abuse last night!

I think my problem is that I have too high expectations of both myself and my squadmates. I have this idea that if it isn't perfect, it isn't good enough, and I seem to apply that to everything. If one squad member does something on their own by their own instinct, then I rage because that isn't part of my plan. When my plan fails because an enemy APC rolled up, I rage over how stupid I was to move in such open ground. When I or a squadmate die crossing a street, I rage over how my squad mates weren't covering me/them. I rage when I hear over teamspeak that there is a BDRM south of me and my squad dies because that BDRM was a BMP-3. I seem to demand that everyone else know as much as I do and that my squad mates match (or more often times exceed) my tendencies of how I work as a squad member. When I fail, I am disappointed, and I seem to express that disappointment in anger and frustration.

That is why I enjoy games like GRAW. My squadmates move exactly where I tell them, they tell me exactly what they see, they use whatever kit I give them, and they don't second-guess my plans, and they don't point out things that are irrelevant to the situation at hand. And they never, ever, give out a compass bearing of 365.
I like yo style!

Re: Angry Squad Leaders

Have I had an angry SL in PR. Not yet. But that's because right now PR < 2142 in my priorities on playtime (though they're quickly equalizing) so if I get into a situation on PR I can't resolve, meh, I'll go to another squad or, if none are available, just leave the server and give my spot to someone else.

So far most of the SLs I've joined in PR have been polite and either excellent leaders or clearly trying and aware that sometimes their plans may either be flawed or not communicated as well as they could be. I've had some stinkers of SLs but generally I realize it within a minute or two and just switch squads.

It has been my experience that in FPSes when someone is raging over minor things either they are just as guilty of the action for which they are raging or they are the cause of the problem and probably know it at a subconscious level. Have I raged? Sure. Normally it's teamstackers over the course of 3-4 rounds that gets me going. Not missing a revive, a random TK, losing a flag/CP to a superior team or the like which I'm normally facing from the few bad apples.

Yeah. I know how some say
"Winning isn't everything" But it's very hard to develop an attitude like that. I like the idea of winning, it sets an expectation which can motivate people. Obviously we don't want winning to be our first and only objective, otherwise that expectation is set too high, and the ranting ensues. But seriously, consecutive losses really drag you down. Or really pathetic ones.
1st Priority: Help the team; be efficient.
2nd Priority: Give it your best.
3rd Priority: Attempt to win.

That to me seems like an ideal attitude.

I dunno, for me consecutive losses don't get me down. I don't have to win to have fun. I play these games to let off steam after work. Top priority for me is enjoyment and immersion (in the case of PR at least). What gets me down, regardless of game, is repeated consecutive steamrollings.

The most recent extreme example would be in BF2142 where I play 8 hours one day and didn't win a single round. The closest round was 40 tickets apart with most rounds ending with a 100-150 ticket disparity. Two rounds ended with <20 tickets lost on the other side. Yes, 280+ to 0. What was happening was that the other side of ~15 people just steamrolled the side I was on. So every round we'd get 3-5 people who would quit. We'd be down 10-12 to 15. Some fresh blood would come in on our side. Rinse, repeat. If we got anyone from the other side I didn't see it.

I don't mind not winning once in a day's worth of playing. I mind constantly being 120-150 tickets off. 30-40 tickets is a close enough game where even though I lost I enjoyed myself. 100+ is a bad beat. 8 hours of bad beats is hardly enjoyable.

0th priority, outside of scrims, look for a challenge. If you're thumping the other side massively consider mixing up the roster now and again. Other than that, I agree with your assignment of priorities.

Yes. 2 days ago. Lemme stress it doesn't happen all the time, at least not that I notice in the ~month I've been playing 2142 now. It just happens to be the most recent example and one, while upsetting at the time, is far from worth mentioning really other as an anecdote of a behavior I see in many different games off-and-on.

AB is off on that server and I have always known those guys to switch to balance ESPECIALLY if the teams are stacked.

Re: Angry Squad Leaders

What I meant by consecutive losses is what you were talking about, steamrolling. Because if you lose a lot in a row, you usually are getting steamrolled. But that's not the case all the time. I should have been more specific. Oh yeah and I forgot about having fun.
