Re: Independence Day

I'm sitting here listening to the alternating sounds of firecrackers and fire trucks with their sirens going. I hope my neighborhood doesn't burn down tonight.

Another thread on Independence Day:

Also I do like the firework displays on Independence day, always shown on tv up here.

Re: Independence Day

Thank you, Startrekern. Even though a few foreigners seemed it fitting to bring their filthiness to the thread. Thank you to those who've served, supported those who served, and actually said HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY in the thread and not how it's wrong or not yours. Respect this day, many have bled and died.. lost friends, family, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, and grandparents so we can claim this day.

I'm not sorry for being such an uptight guy.. I don't find it fitting for humor or anti-American jokes in this thread, and we won't spit on your threads when you're "day" comes around.

Wow can this sentence be taken in a couple of ways.

4th of July is a time of celebration and laughter, not sit here and get angry at people who are enjoying themselves. You need to sit down, grab your best alcoholic beverage, and relax champ.

Re: Independence Day

My military ties are not very close at all. (My grandfather was MP in the navy in WWII and my fiancee's brother is currently an Army Ranger medic.) To add to that, there are a few things that I don't like about this country. I didn't ask to be born in this country. I wasn't given the option of growing up under some other flag. And while some do serve so that the rest of us can be free, what I hear more about is armed service members dying while trying to get a paycheck or because they thought this was the only way they could go to college one day.

There are a ton of reasons to mitigate the idealistic view of the 4th of July. Ignore them. Today many other countries have similar freedoms to the US, but we took a unique path to get where we are first. If you have ever drove on US roads, claimed someone in office was less than perfect, or any number of other daily activities without fear, many died in the act of protecting your rights. For many armed service members, that probably wasn't the exact reason they did what they did, but regardless of their momentary motivation, you owe them your freedom.

The 4th of July is not about eating hot dogs and watching fireworks. It is about keeping yourself grounded. Reminding yourself that you don't deserve what you have and you could have never earned it. It's about giving credit where credit is due and honoring them. It's about reflection. It is about getting rid of this idea that you are entitled to all this without a second thought of where it came from. It is about thanking armed service members for your right to eat hot dogs and shoot fireworks.

My only true problem with the 4th of July is that it allows people to feel like if they just thank an armed service member and honor the fallen on this one day they are off the hook for another year of flipping them the bird and cutting them off in traffic. They serve you more than one day a year. Attempt to return the favor.

In closing: If you can read, thank a teacher. If you can read English, thank a member of the armed services. (This goes for the Brits too.) (Sorry Marines, you don't get all the credit even though it sounds smoother.)

Re: Independence Day

So far, the 4th seems to be a holiday where we drink, shoot fireworks, and forget what actually happened two centuries ago. If, instead, you'd rather declare your independence again to honor that fight, check this out:

And if you can read more than just English, thank the traders who deal peacefully with their peers in the global economy. People like John Hancock, the guy with the flourishing signature in the Declaration of Independence, who ran rum from foreign waters against the wishes of the world's greatest superpower of the time.

We should probably celebrate a National Smuggler's Day, to honor those who participate in free and peaceful trade against the wishes of oppressive prohibitionists and teetotalers.

Not to go completely off topic, but there are other day's, a few examples:
Memorial Day
Veterans Day
V-E Day
V-J Day
I guess you could also include Labor Day

You could also just think about it everyday, July 4th is America's Birthday.

Dread I noticed you said "I didn't ask to be born in this country. I wasn't given the option of growing up under some other flag. "

Where would you rather have been born, and what country would you rather have been raised under?

Do NOT turn this thread into a flame war.

Do NOT reply to my post saying "I'm not turning this thread into a flame war", thereby inciting a flame war.
