Re: Ok we need to pick one
We are saying TG members shouldn't insulate themselves from the rest of the team by not using the TG advertised communication program and then act like everyone who doesn't use their beta software is sub par because they might have technical issues or a previous poor experience with it.
Some people won't be trying mumble out until it leaves beta, and there's no reason to blame them for that. Some people had the spamming comms problem with mumble before that mumble users say is a TS problem now. Some people just want to be able to have a reason to switch but still want to communicate with the people still on TS without having two comm programs running.
The point of this thread is that some of us would like a solid support from the admins of one or the other so there is a reason to pick one over the other. Currently the TG support is for TS, so if people are bitching about people being in the 'other' communication program the TS people are right no matter how awesome mumble is, just like the TS people are more right to use TS than Ventrilo. Some don't like having to be more than one program to talk to the whole team verbally without being commander.
Of course to have a mumble month or mumble week all that would have to be done is post a sticky that says 'Hey it's mumble month/week so everyone use mumble and we can see how it goes. See the how to install mumble thread that is already done and join our mumble server that is already there'.
That is all it would take to encourage the people who haven't given it a try to do so. Telling them to do it on their own is not the way to go with beta software or something they have already had a bad experience with.

Re: Ok we need to pick one
This is getting out of hand.
I was in the wrong not being on the TS channel.
I will try and use it everytime I play.
Lets end the mumble debate here.

Re: Ok we need to pick one
Mumble is not a beta, that only refers to TwistedHelix's modifactions/build, which should be quite minor.

It is? I see alot of the community supporting it, admins supporting it, just because we have a TS server does not mean TG (whatever you mean by that) thinks we shouldn't use mumble
Dispo: what are you hoping to gain from a private server?

It's a valid issue affecting the server. If the admins want to work on a solution in private, i'm happy to leave it with you.

Re: Ok we need to pick one
I think the way to really test mumble effectively is to turn ingame voip off for a week or month and put a nice big sticky and advert on the server saying mumble month/week.
That way if you want to play you have to download mumble. I think some people are being stubborn about the program and just refuse to try it no matter how many people say its good, however it really takes less than 5minutes to install and be ingame so there's no excuses about it being to long to install or to complicated or any thing of the sort.
There are some people that might have issues but there are forums where people can always ask for help.

Re: Ok we need to pick one
Sandiford, you were wondering what TG means to snoogs in your second-to-last post, and just to make it clear, TG isnt just the PR community. Our world of warcraft community is probably twice the size of the PR community. In addition, all it takes is a simple dropdown of the "games" list at the top of the forums to see how many other titles the community supports.
The message that snoogs was trying to convey with that is that regardless of whether or not we adopt mumble for PR, the community-at-large will continue to use TS simply because the only game mumble is geared for is PR right now. Some people dont seem to understand this and are under the impression that if we adopt mumble here, that TS will just disappear, and its turned into a flame war of sorts.
I agree with cougar on this. People need to let it die. We've had multiple threads on the same subject and every single one gets into this kind of debate that comes very close to bordering on personal attacks. The administration is looking into possible avenues of getting us a private mumble server so that we would have full administrative control over whats going on. However, this is their process to deal with. Theres nothing any of us can say or do, short of funding the server, that would change or speed up this process. So lets just let our admin team do their jobs and move on to a new topic.

Re: Ok we need to pick one
Im up for trying out a mumble month, both TS and mumble are great programs that bring more team work to the table and thats what its all about. Anyone thats used either programs knows that sometimes there is way to much chatting. Ive had times on mumble where i didnt hear quiet for 10 min and the same thing for TS. Instead of whining about things like chat spam, bind a key to mute the program and wait a few minutes.
And i dont think that this thread has gone to far at all cougar, i dont even see how you could have come up with that. And no one was blaming you for anything at any point in tbis thread.

That's not true. Looking at Mumble, it supports:
CoD 2, 4 and 5
CS:S
BF2 and all variants
DoD:S
Gary's Mod
Dystopia
HL2
Left 4 Dead
TF2
Insurgency: Modern Combat
Age of Chivalry
Wolfenstein:ET
Link
Quite a few of those, TG plays.

Re: Ok we need to pick one
Notice the part where I said "right now". This means that while the software supports those other titles, without a dedicated mumble server of our own, the odds of getting channels set up for all of those games specifically for TG's servers is probably nil. This is why I suggest we let the admins do their job.

Re: Ok we need to pick one
Ferris I dont think any one means for TG to change from TS to mumble that is quite obviously just silly.
However what i believe most people mean is to change from TS to mumble only for PR as it is proven to be much more effective, I'm not sure where people got confused that were trying to change the whole community to use mumble.

Not necessarily. There were several comments in this thread implying that " TG switch to mumble for official communications" if only because they only play PR and don't realize the extent of this community in the number of games it hosts.
I agree with the sentiment that if we were going to adopt Mumble as an "official" comms program, at least wait till it's out of beta. Assuming that it will get out of beta. Hell, I played Counter-strike for what, 6 years while it was a "beta"? Now that I think of it, the numbering convention for PR indicates that this is still beta as well. I think I just invalidated my own argument.
Ok, I guess I have nothing worthwhile to add here, carry on...

Re: Ok we need to pick one
I didn't think that this thread was getting heated at all - I thought we were having a nice little debate over mumble. No reason for anyone to lose their temper or think that others are, is there? Isn't that what a mature community does - discuss things?
Anyway, I don't see a problem with people using mumble and they're going to use it no matter what any of us say. Certainly the admins don't need to worry about that. The admins should and will be available via TS, but I'm also going to say that not every admin needs to be on TS every time they play on the server - we do have other admins around.
TS is not going away. Mumble is not going away. We just need to deal with it and accept it. Each has it's strengths and weaknesses. However, I feel we cannot mandate that people use one or the other. Heck, we don't require people to have mics to play on our server, just that they communicate (Page Up/Page Down anyone?). If several players elect to use Mumble to coordinate, simply ask that they also try to use TS or we could just get a CO and use them for coordination, right?

Heeeeeeeeeard...
AFAIK, Mumble is still under development, right? Plus, until we can get our own Mumble server, I'd vote for TS...
Not that I'm the biggest TS rat ever, but I do like to join it from time to time, specially when I'm in the mood to SL.
