Re: ARMORED CAValry

As a side note, during WW2 tanks were used to escort squads off across areas with very little cover. A group of 2-3 tanks would provide great cover and support and allow squads to set up rally points where they normally could not reach.

I also have found that long range combat is key with tanks. If there is an officer present or special ops, the binoculars are clutch when picking out those hard to see targets.

Re: ARMORED CAValry

I'm not sure of the differences in armor/shells between the two games, but PoE is a good reference point for how well squads with two tanks can work. I've played with a couple of good clans (Pr100f being one) who seem to work primarily with armor, to devastating efect - which works really well on the PoE maps.

You're definitely right about the infantry being required to protect the tanks (and this becomes more necessary during CQB), but two tanks working together can be devastating. Two tanks facing each other will volley shots back and forth, and the survivor is generally the one who fires first, or doesn't miss - but introduce a second tank to fire a shell into the side/rear of that enemy tank, and it's "G'night, sweetheart".

2 squads, with a tank in each and the necessary infantry support would be ideal, and a pincer/flank from such a pair would pretty much ride roughshod over any enemy defence, I would have thought!

Excellent idea, getting some SOP's up and running. Like well-flown choppers, it's a breathtaking sight seeing well-organised armour roll across the battlefield...

I'd like to see APC's and tanks doing this more often on the server. What we need MUCH less of, is people driving an APC around in hot zones, with no backup. All that's achieved is the APC gets blown up, and the team loses another valuable spawn point.

I'd like to see this too the problem is lack of communication. Its really only possible at the squad lvl with one apc/tank and four infantry.

With that in mind I'm gonna try this again tonight. Anyone intrested should be on teamspeak.

For tonight some revised sop's I'v done the four infantry and 2 crewman approach befor with limited succes. I think part of the problem was that as squad leader I was playing the role of foot soulder. I'm gonna try it tonight with a tank: one crew man and the SL leaving the third spot open allowing the squad to still spawn in. Finally taking a que from the 1st assigning a sgt/ftl for the ground troops with tatical command. Hopeing this will keep me the sl alive longer witch should keep squad cohesion better.

Is it possible to use teamspeak and in-game VOIP at the same time? Would another channel alleivate the communication issues?

Yes for some people not all witch is why we only really use in game voip. I think another channle would help but again the consensus is some people cant use it and the commander is suppose to be coordnating things like that(larger scale).

John,

If you are on tonight, count me in the CAV squad. I am sure we can make this thing work...I have faith.

We got a chance to employ this last night. We had to wait for a couple of maps before Qwai finally came up. I thought the SL in the tank was a great idea, leaving the .50 cal spot open for spawning squad members. We saw alot of combat but didn't lose the tank once....great work driving Johnny. Too bad that map plays like it's an epic. We got a good half hour in before squad members had to excuse themselves. Lets do it again...I'm a much better gunner than driver btw.

Re: ARMORED CAValry

Heya, I'm getting back into BF2 after a long hiatus from it. PR is entirely responsible for this, and I am especially interested in getting into some sort of armor/cav action. Dedicated squad(s) seem really ideal. Hopefully when I can get on sometime (preferably a password night) I can find a spot amongst you guys.

I'm happiest in the driver seat, but capable in any role needed. Tanks are my first choice, but I'll do light armor just as willingly. Had some small success doing adhoc cav missions when I and the 42nd were still active (back in vanilla BF2 days). Funny that... we were mostly a leg recon unit, but we ended up adopting an ACR logo, thanks to SabreSix who had real life cav experience. But I digress.

Hope to join you folks soon.

Re: ARMORED CAValry

Got some excellent rounds in tonight. The tank infantry combo is killer.

thanks to

secret squirle
Donagle
Prophaniti
Mosley
Kevlar
Belhad

Sorry I know there were more just cant remember to many great guys tonight. If you were with me tonight please give me any feedback advice. What you thought worked what didn't.

Also a special thanks to Blindscape one of our regulars on the server, while not in the squad this guy manned the repair/rearm jeep and kept our tank alive the entire round.

Most memorable moment tonight was on Sunset City. After putting up a stiff resistance at lower city the US team resorted to using Little Birds to get there heavy at in range of the tank. Nice concept however they were never able to get off that second shot.

John;

While I appreciate the mention, I think I was with your squad for the last 20 seconds of one map, and the first 20 of the next. I would have played, but I started to make out the sounds of my wife throwing up through my headphones. I COULD have ignored it, but .....

Re: ARMORED CAValry

I got in a few rounds in your squads last night. Was a lot of fun. We didn't lose the tank until the end of the match when we tried to assault the flag way up on the hill (game was over anyways). Sorry I cant remember the name of the flag, but those tow missiles tore us up pretty good. I just ran around and tried to keep targets spotted on the map, throwing my smoke for a visual marker or launching some grenades their way.

Using the little bird as a mobile AT platform is a blast. In Vanilla bf2 my buddy used to pickup the at kit and sit on the wing of the little bird, I would sneak up behind the tanks, hover near the backend and let him fire off a round into the backside, then fly off until he was reloaded, then move in for the kill. I wish I could fly a chopper like I could in vanilla bf2, PR seems like a totally different ballgame.
