Soon to be BF2 noob with some questions.

I just ordered this today, hopefully it shall arrive either next week or the week after Christmas. Anyhoo, my questions are:

Should I play some Single Player first to get a real feel for the game?

When I do move to Multiplayer, should I go ahead with the mods or just the plain one for awhile?

Any helpful ideals or tips would be most welcome!

    hey KillDaddy,

well, I've played the single player vanilla game a couple times, just to get used to the keyboard keys, and mouse buttons. (reading in the manual did nothing for me). plus I wasn't previously exposed to games of this type, I'm a diablo II, NeverWinter Nights, CIV kid, with little FPS experience.

the AMosely jumped me right into PR. that was a harsh jump... to start with that. I settled back into POE, and I love it there.

I've never played BF 2 Vanilla on pub servers... I have only played MODs and always at the TG servers. I think most would say, don't bother with vanilla. but... the single player will get you the right keys... (so, what, maybe 15 -20 minutes in single player.)

the Mods are quite different though, so trust NOTHING you learn playing vanilla.

aside from that, jump in the waters fine.

    Welcome KillDaddy!

My two-cents: Play around with the single player just long enough to get a feel for the controls and how the Squad Leader and Commanding Officer commands work. That will cover your basics and you can then jump into multiplayer. But I wouldn’t bother with MP vanilla-BF2, we hardly ever play it here and its not enjoyable anywhere else. Download the POE2, PR and FH2 mods and see which one(s) fits your style.

And if you don’t have a mic, please get one. It really does make a difference for you and your teammates.

I look forward to seeing you on the servers!

Yo KillDaddy! Yeah, get broken in with the Singleplayer and don't ignore getting to know the Squad Leader and Commander interfaces even though you don't get much out of them with the bots in Singleplayer mode.

When you hit the multiplayer servers, preferably TG servers of course, jump in a squad with some TG tagged players - unless Melee is in it, he's worthless . Also read the TG primer and associated battlefield stickies in the forums to get a frame of reference for things like etiquette and handling SitReps. Don't be afraid to ask questions and if you end up not likeing the squad you are in - switch.. squads have their own personalities and you'll easily find one that works for you.

    Cheers!

Good to go on the mic front as I'm currently playing a lot of CoD4 on the TG servers for that. I will definitely use SP to learn the commands though.

    Thanks for the great tips!

If you're playing CoD4 on the TG server, you'll do just fine in BF2. You should definitely download all three mods and see which ones you enjoy most: Project Reality (PR), Point of Existence 2 (PoE2), and Forgotten Hope 2 (FH2)... after all they're FREE!

Re: Soon to be BF2 noob with some questions.

Only time I would recommend playing single player is for aircraft training. Especially the helicopters. A lot of people will get pretty irate if you jump into a jet or helicopter and can not fly decently. I trained in single player till I thought I was good enough to play multi with no griping about my flying.
If you would happen to download Project Reality I highly recommend single player training for helicopters and jets. The game play has a completely different feel when flying and will take time to get use to it. The biggest secret to flying a helicopter in PR is to let the helicopter warm up first before even trying to take off(about 30-45 seconds). You will hear the difference from the blades starting up and when they are ready for actual take off. Jets need to warm up as well but are a little easier to fly in PR.
Also single player just to get the feel of controls, squad leader, and commander positions as suggested above.

Everyone else got you set up so I'll just say welcome to TG! When you make it to multiplayer jump in a squad with anyone that has the |TG| tag (or some variant). Feel free to ask lots of questions and most importantly have fun!

Well I played some SP last night to get a feel for it, this was before I installed the 1.41 patch - haven't played since, and I gotta say... I wasn't that impressed. Maybe it's just that I'm not used to all the controls yet nor have I run through any of the tutorial things or whatever they are called. Got pissed last night when one of the bots on my team hops in a tank by himself and takes off in it, only to run me over.

Heey you are coming over here?

I used to be big time BF2 player... Installing it again since the mods are looking quite tasty.

Anyway, don't judge it by its cover... BF2 is only enjoyable in TG servers for me... It is still the one of the best games if played right.

Fun, fun and more fun. But do not be selfish. Provide some fun and you will receive some fun.

I'm gonna give it a go over the weekend and such. Downloading the mods at home right now. Hopefully my fellow TGers will be patient with me till I get the knack of things.

My best SP experience was while playing the nuclear reactor map last night. I set up as a sniper up on the top of the crane in the middle of the map. Ran out of ammo then didn't know what to do, lol.

That's when you switch to commander and drop yourself a supply crate. Be sure to zoom the map for the ultra-precise drop.

(But not in multiplayer on the TG servers of course)
