Discussion: Battlefield 2 / Battlefield 2 - Ranked Vanilla - 64 players on a 16 player map, old school. - An element of gameplay that I loved in Desert Combat, now absent in Battlefield 2,
An element of gameplay that I loved in Desert Combat, now absent in Battlefield 2, was having up to 64 players fight over 3-4 flag points. There was much less 'cat-and-mouse' flag capturing back then, and it created intense firefights over more crucial areas.
I was wondering if it were possible to 'spice' up the map roster a little by adding some 16 player version maps on the 64 or 48 player servers? I think it would be very interesting.
Can't say as I'm a fan of this idea. When TG tried 64 players on a size 32 map, all I really saw was zerging- barely any tactics at all. And if you happened to spawn at a point that was under attack, your life expectancy was about 1.8 seconds. I don't even want to think about the hell that would be 64 on a size 16 map.
Agreed, though I think that depends a bit on the map Tarpan. Clean Sweep for instance would be fine with 64 on a 32. 64 on a 16 seems kinda crazy though. Sounds more like "BF2: Deathmatch" to me.
Remembering back on the demo days, there was a server i used to play a lot on, which was 64 on the small version of Oman. (16 players). It was awesome.
This game is about infantry, and 64 on a 16 is exactly what this is about. Its crazy, stressfull and extremely demanding of the SLs and Commanders.
Suggestion: Try it out next saturday on the passworded server.
If we can have the server load different map sizes on a per map basis, I think it would be fun to change up the map size depending on what type of map it is. And within the map line up, we could do 1 map at 16 to have a good ol' frag fest...just for a change of pace now and again.
Idea sounds good for here and there. Throw in two 16 maps outta all the 64 maps we have and change game play for a round or two. Now 16 player maps i think would almost change or wipe out squad play, just an all havoc game with lots of fraggin. But thats cool if there are only two maps like that. Play four rounds of intense squad play and so forth, then have a round of fun fraggin. I agree with redoak, try it out on a saturday password night.
When I get home people'll ask me, "Hey, why do ya do it man? Why? Just some war junkie?" Ya know what I'll say? I won't say a goddamn word. Why? They won't understand. They won't understand why we do it. They won't understand that it's about the men next to you, and that's it. That's all it is.
I agree with the sentiment that it would kill alot of the aspect of the game that makes BF2 rock. It would be POSSIBLE to have a game on a small map with 64 players and still be very team and tactic oriented, but it would be much harder and often people wouldn't go along with it for long probably. I mean, when there are that many people in that small of a region you simply are begging to see squads just storm each other, sure it makes for intense fights but its basically just squad based death matches, not squad based tactical shooter-ing haha
I don't know about all the "it sounds bad" or "it might kill the gameplay" comments as this has been tried and true on all the classic Desert Combat maps like Bashra's Edge.
I don't think zerging will be much of a problem as long as the armored vehicles are removed and each side has one UCB. Maybe when Dice finally releases the MDT package, we can mod some of the smaller map layouts to accomidate larger amounts of players.
Still, Desert Combat had some of the most intense infantry fighting, and I feel the very large maps in BF2 spread these types of encounters out far and few.
64 players on Gulf of Oman 16 is really good. It forces everybody to work together, it almost turns into a sort of war of attrition where you're trying to make a breakthrough but its still alot of fun
Won't this completely destroy the role of commander other than supply and UAV? I think this would just be like turning off the "Use Tactics" option.
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.
not really, everybody has to back up and also attempt to surround a base and you have to use artillery among other things to try and clear out the base.
It is not often that I encounter across myself when researching a topic. I found the following in a recent article on the uses of ethnography in virtual environments:

Took a gamble and got a refurbished 30 GB OCZ Vertex 1 off of NewEgg for the low, low price of $30. Had some trouble getting the drive to be recognized by Windows or by my BIOS. Had to use a jumper...
