Here is some satellite images of Mogadishu, I was thinking about doing something when they release the mod tools, but I have never made a map though. http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...ia/imagery.htm

Re: black hawk down mod?
I agree with alot of what people have suggested, very nice ideas. Civilians though would be too much of a headach to even try and like someone said it would then have to be mad a mod. As for vechicals i say we stay as close to what the movie is like because for the most part people have seen the movie not read the book. Too bad we don't have little birds eh, thatd add a nice touch to the game. There should be atleast 4 humvees to make a convoy and a minimum of 2 blackhawks for the USMC. APC would not be a big issue considering they really did not have any armor until the end of the movie when being rescued. As for MEC vehicals thats a tough one because they really did not have anything. They did have mobil AT but we don't really have anything like that. So maybe a buggy or two for them. NO TANKS in my opinion, the movie had none if i recall.
Make as many roof tops accessable inside the city to even things out for the MEC. Only having two buggies, they will need all the roof tops they can to get AT to fire on humvees.
As for capture points i agree with the USMC having a main base way outside of the city. Have all vehicals here an that as main spawn point. Hotel and two blackhawks as capture point. I don't know who said it but i agreed wiht eh idea of the second crash site being near MEC home base so it can be swarmed easily.
Drummerboy keep me in touch my friend i'd like to help as much as i can. We all jus have to remeber to keep it well balanced. Don't want USMC to over power MEC and so on.When I get home people'll ask me, "Hey, why do ya do it man? Why? Just some war junkie?" Ya know what I'll say? I won't say a goddamn word. Why? They won't understand. They won't understand why we do it. They won't understand that it's about the men next to you, and that's it. That's all it is.

Re: black hawk down mod?
All I can say is GG Rangers on this map : /
So when will the mapping tools be released anywho? I'd like to learn 'em and help out if I can.
Edit: Oh, and the rooftops should prolly be close enough to hop from roof to roof as long as it's on the same side of the street. Less having to use annoying ladders that way. Would promot rooftopism.Last edited by Lionel-Richie; 07-07-2005 at 12:52 AM.
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

Re: black hawk down mod?
The map tools are supposed to be released mid month. I think that there should be limited lives too to make things a bit more different.

Re: black hawk down mod?
Well until the tools come out we could at least get some sketchs of the map going. Maybe everyone can sketch their ideas and post them here?

Re: black hawk down mod?
I'll setup a website for the mod once we get this going, and it's for sure that we'll go through with it.

Re: black hawk down mod?
The rockets used were simple rocket propelled grenades, not anti-tank rockets or anti air rockets. The way that the missles were portrayed in the movie is misleading, as actually hitting a Blackhawk with an actual RPG would be an act of god. In real life however, the militants had dug trenches into the streets where they were able to lie with the RPG pointed stright up in the air. The grenade would be set to go off at the altitude that the helo's fly most often so that the person launching the grenade would only have to fire when he saw the helo. The resulting airburst and shrapnel would be enough to damage/down the helo's.

ACtually, if you hold the sprint key while you go down a ladder, you'll slide down it quickly. This would be the same as sliding down a rope.

Re: black hawk down mod?
One thing on making climables in games: This works easily enough for static objects like ladders and stationary ropes, but for something like ropes on the Blackhawks it would take a fair amount more work. The climable goes from being a static piece of level geometry to a game entity that is far from static. Then you have to worry about how to properly get the player characters to stick to the rope, and look good while the BH is flying stuff like that.

Re: black hawk down mod?
And be able to deploy and remove the ropes. You can't be flying with ropes dangling from the BH. And it could only be used once, as the ropes are disconnected from the BH and fall to the ground (until it rearms)

Re: black hawk down mod?
i read somewhere about not being able to repell down fast enough...on ladders if you hold shift when going down you fire man slide...really fast!..so it would be possible to repell down.
that sounds like a good idea trooper.

Re: black hawk down mod?
Here's a write up on what the editor will be like. Good news!, seems we can create in Max/Maya and export/import. Infact, this is the standard for creating vehicles, motions and buildings. Good, good news, meaning whenever we feel like churning out some city buildings, trash piles to block roads, etc, we can!
Texturing would be more of an in editor thing, so at this point it's really a concept art/pure modeling stage, but sounds like Mishkan and I can work on some 3D stuff!
Any others out there with sufficient max/maya experience?
Anyhow, here's the best compilation of what the editor will be like that I could find:
http://www.planetbattlefield.com/bf2/tweakin/editor/
Also, If you own the black hawk down book, the one released before the movie for sure, but possibly the one after, the first 2 pages are maps. The second map shows, basically, what you would see on a map load screen. It shows the airstrip/USMC base, and the long road into the town, marking the downed blackhawk sites, as well as the initial target building. Great, great resource. I'll scan it after work and host it online with a link, but for now you can get a clossup of one site by previewing a few of the pages from here (about 4-5 in is a map of the first assault point):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0871...11#reader-page
This isn't the map I was talking about, but still a great resource.
Edit: Here's a detailed picture of the same map/view:

Mishkan, you spoke first! You really able to possibly get us a small site to keep up to date/goal oriented for those involved in production of the map? I could as well, but it'd be some basic flash, nothing overly fancy.
I'm looking forward to some good map work on a great idea, with all it's basis in keeping it accurate to history.
Edit: found some maps, similar to the one I was referring to from the book
