Public server, private squad
In the course of the ongoing debates on private/public servers and passwords, and until we have a solution to the issue of a solid place for TG players to get a good game on, I'd like to try out an idea I have (and see if anyone wants to try this).
On a public server, I'm going to try creating a squad with a publicly posted password:
TGAMER
I'll probably call the squad something similar.
Anyone who reads the forums here can get in on it. Obviously the squad will operate by TG standards of play. If anyone else wants to try this approach, use the same password on your squads. It's a way of ensuring that your squadmates actually know what TG is as opposed to just stumbling in on it.
As a disclaimer - I know the purpose of the public servers is to help new people learn about TG. I'm not aiming for a bunch of locked-down squads. My intention is to have a few squads in there for people who don't feel like being the educator, and just want to play with a good group. In addition, the commander can count on the TG squad(s) to cooperate and fight the good fight.
I'll try it tonight (probably between 8-12 EST), if my squad is always empty, I'll give this up. Please post thoughts and comments.

I knew you could lock a squad ... but you can password it???
Otherwise, that sounds fantastic. I'll join up.
Even without my earned kit.
Even without my buddy who's stuck on the other team."You live and learn. Or you don't live long."

The lock is an invitation-only setting. The SL has to invite the squad members. I believe that a player can request to join a locked squad and the SL gets a notice asking to allow or deny.

I dont think you can use a password to get into a locked squad. but if you guys are using TG teamspeak server, there can be a request to open it for a while and then lock it...

Re: Public server, private squad
I did not know that. So I can create a TG squad, and invite players to come on board? Maybe that manual is good for somethign after all....

That is correct. When you make a private squad, click on the "Manage" button and it will open up a list of players that are currently unassociated with a squad. Click the names of the people you want to recruit and click "Apply".

Yes, you can lock your squad at any time by clicking on the little lock icon, and then you can invite people with the "Manage Squad" tab.
Don't get snobby though people. You want to attract new team players, not isolate them from the good squads.
I only like to lock squads if I am trying to keep a team of 3-4 for covert missions.

Re: Public server, private squad
I believe the invite list is everyone on your team. I have been in other squads when invited. And with our squadless kick, you would never have anyone in that invite list if it only looked at squadless players. Unfortunately the list doesn't tell what squad the player is currently in either.

Very good point.. Locked squads should be for the purpose of putting together a solid squad of TG members or known teamplayers, not simply for the purpose of locking out others.

LOL.. It's all in the intent.

Re: Public server, private squad
Well, no passwords on squads then, to hell with that idea.
I am all out of ideas. Hopefully we can re-arrange the servers in the near future to manage the public/private balance better.
I move to delete this thread as it is a moot point.Last edited by AMosely; 07-12-2005 at 05:27 PM.
