    Re: Password Nights Revisited

I remember a time when the GR servers were passworded and required players to apply to be a part of the community. We were much smaller then and GR doesn't require as many players as BF2 but we still have a lot of BF2 players. I think we almost have enough to password the server every night. Of course, it would be better to keep growing until the point where we can fill all three servers easily. It's just going to take time and there will be bumps along the way.

    Re: Password Nights Revisited

We have enough SMs to fill the private server every night, but it does not happen.

The fact is, we need players to seed the servers to enable us to get large games going. Otherwise, the server sits there most the day with 5 people idling in it.

At least with periodic PW nights, we all have something to look forward to -- a night when gameplay is at its finest.

    Re: Password Nights Revisited

To fill a server, I think there needs to be at least twice as many members to the server size. If we're not at those numbers, I don't think it's time to permanently password a server.

The PW nights are a good way of getting good games with a lot of people. It's seeded before the PW goes active and has a good number once the server restarts. I think we're getting close where PW nights can't accomodate all the players. Sometimes I see the server full on these nights and sometimes it's near capacity. It'll be time to change things when supporting members regularly need to request free slots on these nights.

I think that this is an issue of having too many servers, really. If there's only one place to go, people will go there even if it's empty. If there's a choice between an empty place and a place with people, people will go where others already are. It's not even a simple choice between two options here, as TG provides 3 servers to play on.

Also, keep play style preferences in mind. Even if I were an SM, I doubt I would play on the private server. I prefer large(ish) maps with lots of players. Epic battles is what I look for.

    Re: Password Nights Revisited

Okay, well... if not the password then what? Teach them? Teaching a group of new people in the TG servers not to B-HOP or UCB camp is like teaching a group of monkeys NOT to be monkeys.

It's hard to do and it's VERY unorganized.

One thing on the word "noob".

When I refer to noob, I don't mean noob to the game or the community, I mean the people who violate our rules and standards and who do it continuiously. I should probably replace the word "noob" with "violator".

In any case, something needs to be done. It's easier on PCS because of the GUI. You can have flashing big blue text, or what not and it's easier to see.

In the confusion of a 32 vs 32 player war (practically), you can't expect many people to pay attention to text. Most people who are kicked do not even know why they are kicked.

A second idea, possibly, would be to link the server to the website, if that's even possible. I've seen it done on CS and HL servers, but that's an entirely different engine.

What I'm talking about is making it so that you have to be registered on the forums to play at TG for more than 2 days, or etc.

Steam ID's and etc help in this effort on HL servers, but I'm not too sure we can do this here. How is each player ID'd? Name?

The above solution would be ideal because it gives the players a few days to experience TG and the way we play, while still controlling the population of gamers. It's simple. If you don't have enough time or energy to go and sign up on the forums of TG, then you do not have enough effort put forth to play on our servers.

That is the solution that we need. The crowd control that we need. The etc., etc., etc., that we need.

I understand there probably isn't a way to do this yet, and there may never be, but I don't know that for sure, and unless we look in to it, no one here will.

    My 2 cents.

I know of 2 people that will bunny hop on public servers. When I asked them why they reply by saying that although they do not like it, if other people are doing it then they will as well, so as not to lose an advantage. However they like TG because we ban bunny hopping.

We have had people here before saying that they like the rule, but find it a little difficult as they used to do it elsewhere.

Not saying that I agree with their ideals (I never bunny hop as I think it's just dumb), but I do understand their point. I would hate for people who would like our servers to miss out on things simply because the only way they know how to play is the 'Ranked Server'* way. Besides I think it's our responsibility to assist. Teamwork is the TG way.

Not everyone that bunnyhops is a monkey

    (never thought I'd write that)

*not having a go at ranked servers, just using it as an example of the type of play that occurs on them in general.

    Yer Mom,

    Read this thread here.

Your post here made me think of the idea, and I think it is something we can all agree on.

It allows public people to reach our community and know what we are about, while also allowing us to have awesome nights of TG fun. Check it out.

    And,

It is less hassle on admins (not having to set up password, etc...)

    Oh,
And we are able to identify if a BF2 player is registered in the forums. Go to the SOP/Announcements to see a thread about that. If you haven't added your BF2 ID to your forum profile, you should.

I think that by this day and age, people can make the distinction between "noob" and "newb".

Teaching people is a good start, I think. Several times when I've found someone behaving poorly, I've gotten their attention through text or the communication chain and was able to get them to stop. Doesn't work every time, but hey, even getting one person to stop is good.

Next comes the kicking/banning. After making a few attempts to get someone to stop what idiocy they're involved in to no avail, get rid of them. On the CS:S server that I admin, I give people one chance to stop being stupid. If they blow it, they're gone permanently unless they show up on the forums to make an appeal. It's heavy-handed, but it works.

People who aren't mature and responsible enough to find and follow the rules of the server they play on don't deserve to be there.

    Re: Password Nights Revisited

i think the biggest problem is filling the servers. every night that i play, TG's public server #1 is full and both the private server and public server #2 are completly empty. I am not against passwords but i think we would not need them if the other servers were used a little.

Uh yea its been my experience that every time I play on a "password night" server there is a substaintial drop in the number of players that join, and an increase in the number of players that leave...

It usually ends up empty..really early.
I wouldnt like it every night

Really? Most of the time when I'm on, it's rather full. Granted, I generally only play from like 10pm-1am on password nights, but it is mostly full.

The few times I've seen it empty on a password night is when an admin or someone else announced that they want supporting members to go to the private server for some SM-only games there. Kinda annoyed me, because a lot of the players were supporting members, and the server emptied really fast.
