Re: Forum Member Server Kick Ability
FYI... there is a message broadcast to the server in bright green text in the upper left hand corner 10 seconds prior to the player being kicked. It also states why the player is being kicked.

I wish BF2 had better support for kicking. That message isn't always noticed. I don't even notice them and I know they're there. There really should be support for custom messages when a player gets to the server screen after being kicked.

It's just really hard to see...not the admins fault and not the end users fault. But it would be beneficial for all involved if we could find a way to make the text, say, pop right up in the middle of their screen and always on top.
For instance, right now, you could tell someone they are doing whatever wrong..but they just died and for 15 seconds they have a spawn screen covering up ALL TEXT (Stupid DICE). By the time they spawn and the spawn screen goes away, the message has scrolled off. They never even had the chance to see it, even if they were looking for it.

We are hoping that better admin tools will give us the ability to present admin messages better.

True, but then I'd be subject to being kicked. Kinda lose-lose for people like me, though I suppose I could counter it by putting the ID in my profile and not joining until a spot actually opens up. But, I can see bugs with that, too.
At base, though, it is still favoritism, just disguised as making the community better. Any time you give preferential treatment to someone for any reason is favoritism. Don't get me wrong, I don't want mean to be argumentative and I think it's a great idea that stands a good chance of helping out the server. I just think that it conflicts with the idea of a public server.

For the most part, I'm on your side, Tarpan, but this is pretty key: we run a server that's open to the public, but it's by no means a public server. We work hard to make this place fill a niche. It can smack of elitism at times, but there's a definite line in the sand we draw; we constantly play favorites. We generally do it through elimination of the bad as opposed to promotion of the good, however.
The reserved slot situation I've been working on is essentially what has been proposed here, but without the forum member level. Favorites? You bet.
Adding other levels of favoritism is a matter of taste, really. If you can read through the SOPs enough to figure out how to get your BF2 Profile ID, does that entitle you to preferential access? Maybe; that can come out in discussion. Maybe there's something more needed; BF2ID + 1000 posts + 150 rep or whatever; I'll let you guys and the adminship hash that out.
But to say that we don't and shouldn't play favorites is idealistic. If you choose to opt out (somehow) of the favoritism on principle, more power to you, but it's going to happen. It's only a matter of degrees.

I think the TG servers are *more* than public servers. They are a community who is willing to embrace new players. It's the community/forum goers that make the TG server what it is, not the pubbies.
On a side note, anyone know what changing your nick/unique nick in the gp.info file will do? Would that be a way to alter your name?

Re: Forum Member Server Kick Ability
I think it's a good idea in that it will incent new players to dig a little deeper and learn what TG is about, and read the SOPs and such, and this can only elevate the level of play we see on the servers. I've only been around here since the BF2 demo came out (less than 2 months, but probably spent 160+ hours online), and I know that once I discovered exactly what TG was all about after visiting the forums, being warmly welcomed and then directed to the SOPs, I was hooked. Now, TG is as much of the BF2 experience for me as the game itself.
I don't think that enacting the script would artificially 'screen' out people, since everyone has an opportunity (at no cost) to register. Now if there were some sort of financial or 'membership limit' barrier in place, that would be a completely different story...

We are becoming an ever larger community. I could see a need for a supporting member script which would give preference to a non-supporting member spot and also have a script giving preference for the forum member over the non-forum member. That is, if it is technically possible to script both (or any of these).
We already have so many forum members that on the wed/sat night pw'd server nights the servers are completely full for several hours so that non-supporting members often have to wait a while to be able to join. Of course this wouldn't be as much an issue during non-peak hours. But the question in my mind is whether it is possible to enact both of those type scripts at the same time.
If it is possible to pull it off I think it would be a good idea. Less pubbies but still enough so that they can get a taste of it and find out about our style of play. Other questions then arise of if it would be best to do this on just server one or on both public servers. It's an intriguing concept. Hope we can soon find out if any of it is technically possible.

im in your same boat beatnik. i only just found out about TG, and bf2 is what got me here. w/o TG, bf2 would be unplayable. even idling in the main forum shows that there are an average of 30+ people that are ALWAYS in the bf2 forums, even at the most ungodly hours of the night.

It is possible. Read the post above by Pokerface. We have the means to do this, and both the supporting member kick and this forum member kick can work in tandemn. So it isn't an issue of 'can it be done', it is an issue of 'do we want it done'.
Since the logic behind the code is already being produced by the supporting member kick, I wouldn't believe it would require much from poker to insert this portion in it. Not to say it wouldn't be hard, but easier than the original script.
We can always try it on our primary, Server#1, and see how it goes. I say server one because the only way you'll see this script in action is if the server is full.
