Commanders, or lack of them, this past weekend.

I mean this in no offence, as I am new to the arena, but is it normal for their not to be any commanders on weekends? I logged in 3 times this weekend and there was either an ineffectual commander, or none at all. Is this the norm for weekends? I know it is intimidating to jump on as commander when you are expected to know what you are doing here, maybe that is part of the reason there was none.

Now I am new here but I have realized that without an effective commander you are screwed as a team in this style of play. SL's cannot do it all as there is no communication between SL's and they do not have the intel. I tried to SL Sunday 10/23 on Mashtuur and I basically stuck to defence because there was no commander. Our squad did a heck of a job holding the South gas station but that was our only goal and luckily we won the map without a commander.

I mean to pick no bones, I guess if I see this type of situation again I will jump on and give it a try myself. But it was just frustrating to be looking for good team play when there is no coordination. But if I am not part of the solution, I am part of the problem.

It has a lot to do with the squads that are on at the time. Mostly you have 4 full squads. That means 4 players (the squadleaders) you are working with. If only one of those doesn't listen then forget it, you can't do your job.
Another problem is having like six squads that are all half full and with some kind of own agenda (specialized squads).
To sum it up, it begins with good squads.

hey no offence taken, this weekend was a let's say a rough one for all TGers.. we had a big scrim on saturday that took alot of the talent away from the main servers. never hesitate to jump in the CO seat...i mean the worse you can do is loose. Mayfield feel free to look a round and check things out....
that sounds like a good idea trooper.

I'd rather have any CO than no CO (As long as he doesn't constantly TK us with Arty)

As Trooper mentioned, we had an in-house TG vs. TG scrimmage on server #2. So I believe what you were experience was not the norm.

ya, always make an effort to get a CO in the chair, especially if the enemy has one and you dont. having one can point out enemy targets, orginize squad movement, and drop all powerful arty on enemy flags. the UAV is also very helpful in your advance.

Last night (EU time around 8pm) the server was just getting started and none wanted to be CO... i decided to have a go and it went terrible. But noone else was willing to take the job and a bad CO is better than none at all... i guess.

Please feel free to jump in as the CO. As has been stated before, any CO is better than no CO, as long as you don't sit there and arty your own team What we don't tolerate is a CO who flies jets, drives tanks, goes into ground combat, etc. This might be acceptable when it's 8 vs. 8, but when we are at capacity the CO's job is to perform as CO full time. Over the weekend (including Friday night) I had to boot several people who weren't performing CO duties.

On the flip side, I want to state something right now. I was monitoring chat on server 1 yesterday and I saw someone berating the CO. I don't know why (maybe chat over VOIP or something), but this is never acceptable. If the CO is not doing his duties, jump on TS and tell an admin. We will take care of it. If you're not happy with the CO's performance and you think you can do better, then ask him POLITELY if you can take over the position. Don't berate him on the in-game chat and tell everyone how your CO is some "10 year old kid". This abusive chat caused the CO to leave his position, followed by his statement "There, now you have no CO." What a great way for a TG veteran to treat someone new to TG. If I see this again by a TG vet, you're going to get a long break from server 1. This is the reason people won't step up to the plate, because of fear of being treated like this.

There's a funny thing about the admin tool we use. What you see in chat that scrolls off the screen after 5 seconds stays around a long, long time for us to see. In fact, we can see chat from several maps ago if we have been logged on that long. I personally treat it like an arrest: You need probable cause at the moment you make the arrest, but you don't have to arrest at the moment you have probable cause. Before you berate someone in typed chat or type in foul language, just remember that.

well, its not that i did anything wrong... i do know how to command. It just we were on a large map (Daqing Oilfields) and only with a few players. I beleve at the start i had one 5 man squad and a pilot. Things just went terrible and we couldnt hold any flags. So i split the team up into 2 teams hoping to devide the enemy aswell... but we just didnt have enough power to stop them from bulldozering right over us. I guess there wasnt much i could do, i didnt have much to work with. And from a tactical point of view im just not good at commanding, id rather be a grunt

    but hey, i tryed.

Have you ever playd on a team with a good commander then? I mean someone that stepped in and just started smashing the other team to pieces?

A commander who has a goal in mind... in the tactical forum section theres a post now by a guy that plays chess (http://www.tacticalgamer.com/pr-bf2-tactics-sops/61578-cos-going-throat.html) and thats the way he wants to command. I just want a commander to tell me were to go and what to do, and with a reason. It might be alot to ask for some but ive seen it be done. Take my first post here (http://www.tacticalgamer.com/battlefield-2-after-action-reports/61309-best-round-karkand-ever.html) the commander of this round knew what he was doing and every single one on the field was having a great time in one hell of an exelent round. And when i hear about the TG squads like the 7th and how far these guys go in planing what there going to do on a map is awsome but time zones and real life get in the way of probebly ever being able to play like that.
Why is it that the TG server is now empty?? There are more than enough euro players on at this time, why not just go and sit on the server. I know of atleast 5 other Dutch players, let alone the English and some other euro guys in here...

lol... were did all that come from...

All I want from a CO is someone who is trying. I don't care if they are learning. There isn't a way they are going to learn if I am not patient with them. So far you haven't indicated that someone on TG was rude to you or anything and that is good. Just keep plugging away.

Re: Commanders, or lack of them, this past weekend.

What makes TG a great place to play? Is it the script?

It is the people... People helping each other out to get the most out of their entertainment software... People taking on roles so others can be happy...

I command very seldomly... I find it hard. I even do not go up to command unless I see a nice 4-5 near full squads with a chopper squad and a Air squad... Because it is a hard job. I even sometimes do not like SL - ing. But I still do play this game and hop onto these roles and I do have a great time. Why? Because it is the people...

I enjoy Commanding when all the squads are following orders and kicking arse... When I ask for a bombing run both of the jets head for the enemy cluster... I enjoy that. I enjoy sending a squad to a heavily defended flag with a chopper squad giving them support and watch them kill a bunch and take the flag... I like that a whole a lot. What I do no like is... SL s thinking they can do whatever they want... Not passing down my orders. Not listening to me... Or SL s who cannot keep their team together or complete an easy order... Now that is probably why a lot of people hesitate commanding... Because of YOU. YOU the guy who thinks he knows all...

I also love SL ing... I love it so much I do it a lot... I love ordering people around. I love to send a fireteam straight up and get into a flanking position. I love to watch my squad members defend a flag against all odds. I love it when they talk to me and tell me what is up... I hate it when they stay quiet. I hate it when they hop into a jet. I hate how they have this helicopter addiction. I used to play exclusively as a SL... Now all these shy-wannabe s make me sick.

Well my point is YOU are the one that makes TG what it is. If you chicken out and wanna be the YES MAN and watch the whole community not having fun and then complain about it, it is your fault you did not enjoy the game... STEP UP.

Fun, fun and more fun. But do not be selfish. Provide some fun and you will receive some fun.
