Munchkin while your idea sounds great, it's not exactly what I meant. The pilot division I was talking about would be a separate organizational division like the CO division that participates fully in the regular squad matches. The pilots would be played in an rotating pool and for each match they would be put in a ranked order. The pilots at the top of the order would have their choice of aircraft and would get the first slots. As cancellations will likely be abundant in this league due to scheduling conflicts, we'd then go down the ranked order and hand out the pilot slots in much the same way we hand out slots to the signed-up roster for the external scrims.

EX:

The league pilot division has 8 pilots who are Munchkin, Dark Viper, Steel-Penguin, Santa, StrikeFear, Bommando, ABRA, and Tempus.

The assignments for the upcoming Oman match end up being:

MEC
1. ABRA
2. Santa
3. Dark Viper
4. Bommando
USMC
1. Munchkin
2. Steel-Penguin
3. Tempus
4. StrikeFear

I cancel because I can't make it so Santa and Dark Viper end up flying the MEC jets while Bommando is stuck with the attack helo as he is the last to pick being in slot 4.
Munchkin likes to fly Cobra so he takes that, Penguin opts to fly Jet, Tempus wants to get some TV-missile kills in the Cobra so he guns for Munchkin. StrikeFear is overjoyed to get to fly jets because he was ranked fourth and didn't think he'd get the chance this match.

Something like that. Personally I think it's a bit of an over-complication but I don't do aircraft so I don't know how that looks to the air corps. If they like it it's something we can do. We could also "seed" the rankings each match based on the previous match's pilots' results somehow so that we ensured each team had competent and competitive air cover.

Looks like there's some talk in the free agency thread about helo-only pilots and gunners. Maybe we'll have a helo dvision as well.

Again though, I am not yet convinced this is even necessary and would like to know the air corps' opinion on it.

Very interesting idea, and one with a fair bit of potential. One issue that might be raised, however, is the fact that such a system can put excellent jet pilots into the cockpit of a helo, where they only have average skills, and vica versa. Of course, this is solved by creating the different divisions you mentioned.

I am real busy during the Christmas season and want be able to play much but one question. Is it plain BF2 or will it be for the new SF expansion pack?

During the season there will be matches for all games people are interested in. Squad standings will be tallied per BF2 variant(SF expansion, vanilla, Tactical Mod, 'push' mod, etc.). So a given squad will have an overall record, a vanilla record, a SF record, etc. Possibly with 'Bowl games' for each variant. Should be fun.

Obviously if people have another way to do it or feel like their league aspirations are being unrepresented they should feel free to post their alternatives to any of the solutions to these dilemmas that I've come up with. I'm just the league manager, not Mr. FancyPants McLastword.

I've posted a thread in the Grey Ghosts forum asking them input on the pilot's division idea you suggested, ABRA. I'll keep you updated.

Personally, I think it makes great sense. The teams are essentially made up of squads, but of course, I would have expected that VMFA-531 would end up split across teams anyway - just like the pilot's division is, where you could end up flying against squad members on the other side.
At the same time, there's no need for us to hog the assets - most of us are in another squad. Having a pilot division allows everyone a chance.

So it seems fine. As far as ending up with a jet pilot in a helo - well, it's absolutely true that the two sets of "pilots" are two TOTALLY different group of players, with only a few individuals who do both with competence.
There's no reason not to split them up into two divisions.

On the other hand, if you kept them as one division, you just need to ensure that the sign-up list was overloaded enough to ensure that all seats get filled. If player 4 comes up, but all jets are taken, and only helo slots are left, he simply bows out, and joins an infantry squad, if he wants.

Still, separating them seems simpler.

Great thanks for the input Strike. Seems based on the posting in the free agent thread that spliting into a seperate helo division is the direction its headed.

Then there's the issue of some people are helo gunners and not pilots(and for all I know the opposite is true that some pilots aren't practiced in the TV-guideed missile). I'm keeping track of it now but I think in the end it'd be nice to have pilot/gunner pairs sign up so that Maverick, I mean Bommando is always, flying for Goose. But of course that could lead to scheduling SNAFU's if the pilot can't make it or vice versa. Helo pilots and gunners sound off on this topic. I don't know, but the same may apply to jets and their bombadiers.

Like I said, I don't do aircraft.

Way I see it now though is maybe one helo division and one jet division. If you are only comfortable gunning in a helo then take that slot when your rank is up instead of taking a pilot seat in the helo. That way even if people want to keep their flight pairs TopGun style then they can but if their partner drops then they can still fly that day.
