More lag since the last patch?
I can't help but wonder if that last patch has increased the system requirements or the necessary bandwidth needed for BF2?
I find myself lagged out soooo often now in full games; something that was once fairly rare. I know I've heard a lot more chat from in-game VOIP and on the TS server about lag and everytime I raise the question I always get a "Yep, I'm lagged out too."
A little lag I can handle but when your body feels 2 seconds behind your mouse you don't have much of a choice but to quit. The strange thing is that my reported ping is the same regardless of my state of lag.
I'm not even sure if it's the patch....maybe my computer is filling up with spyware or TG is running additional games on the same servers.
Anyone else have this problem?
(Note added later: I was trying to be tongue and cheek with my spyware comment...nothing has changed on my gaming machine and I do regular scans. )Last edited by seforest; 12-13-2005 at 12:11 AM.

Re: More lag since the last patch?
actaully a post like this has been made......server 1 is a stand alone system no other games are on it.....server 2 has both BF2 and AA on it.....try and do some spyware scans and such....
that sounds like a good idea trooper.

I am having the same problem since patch, seems to come and go on random days. I definetly do not have spyware.

Re: More lag since the last patch?
well, I don't know what's going on; just wondering.
Maybe it's a combination of a little extra lag and some aging H/W. We'll see if things improve after a couple of Christmas upgrades.

Re: More lag since the last patch?
The lag comes and goes but I've definetely noticed that I've had way more connection problems with the server which was virtually non-existant before.

Re: More lag since the last patch?
I have been having connection problems also, but it turned out it was a video issue. This still is weird, because it didn't happen until the 1.12 patch. Just as a precaution. If you're losing connection or getting freezes while playing on the server, clear out your cache. Delete all files in the following directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\"YourWindowsAccountNameHere"\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache
Then reload BF2, connect to a server, reoptimize your BF2 video settings. This could solve your problems so it's worth a shot.|TG|seppy

Re: More lag since the last patch?
It was ok after the patch but just in the past few days its been unplayable. It starts ok then the lag gets worse and worse (like a memory leak) until I can't run in the right direction nevermind shoot anyone (if you see me shooting a wall next to me you can guess what has happened).
I virus scanned and checked for spyware (AVG anti-virus and spywareblaster) and there was nothing. Connection checked out as well.
I will try the cache thing but i've changed my video/audio settings so the cache should of been updated with the new settings. Will try it out tonight and hopefully it will be ok.

Re: More lag since the last patch?
I had something like that happen to me for the first time last night. I tried several servers. It was exactly like a memory leak or something: fine logging in, get in the game and all is well, then at some point suddenly the sounds gets super choppy and the video become about 1 frame per 2 seconds or so, even though the ping looks fine. I would have to completely log off of the server. I tried rebooting, making sure nothing else was running, checking for spyware and virii, etc. This has never happened to me before, even after SF and patching to 1.12, but last night I eventually just gave up. Very frustrating.

I don't know if anyone else had this, but when I patched to 1.12 my lag and jitter went through the roof. In a surprise move I actually found a solution on the EA site! It's a punkbuster version issue, you need to install the latest:

Hope it helps

My BF2 pb was out of date (obviously my firewalls are doing their job!), will give this a try tonight if possible and hopefully everything will be fine again.
Thanks.
p.s. just tried a random ranked server and everything feels fine again, I could even fly planes and took out my first attack helo with cannons only! also killed some noob pilots without it ever llagging and making me crash into the ground like when on TG recentlyLast edited by Preston85; 12-13-2005 at 11:54 AM.

Re: More lag since the last patch?
Why doesn't PB complain in some more obvious way when it's out of date? I thought it wouldn't let you join an up-level server.

Re: More lag since the last patch?
Also a connection problem I had a while back was fixed by getting a cable company tech to come out and adjust the transmit signal on my line. While he was here he noticed that my cable modem was 6 years old (!). Between tweaking the signal and exchanging my cable modem for a newer one, that solved a lot of connection issues.

Re: More lag since the last patch?
Note that the data centre backbone uplink towards Europe (well, towards The Netherlands, at least) is very wonky lately, so it might have nothing to do with the patch and/or PB at all. Check this thread: http://www.tacticalgamer.com/user-he...rk-outage.html.
And yes, if your PB client version is older than the server's, it should auto-update itself. If that fails for whatever reason (excessive packet loss being the most likely), the server will kick you after about 5 minutes. You can check on the PB client status by issuing the "pb_plist" command in the console. If your status reads as "OK" (it can take a few seconds to go from "INIT" to "OK" after connecting), your client is properly updated and functioning correctly.
That EA support ticket is telling only half the story: yes, you will get some extra downstream traffic whilst the PB client is being updated, but it is just a tiny amount (about 1 KB/s). This will only affect users on a very marginal connection (like 56k, who wouldn't be able to play this game properly anyway).

Re: More lag since the last patch?
after installing the patch (1st day I didnt have any real problems. Little bit of lag when starting a round on SF but everything cleared up after a couple of seconds. But last night I was losing connection to the server on both BF2 and SF sometimes 10 minutes other times less than 5. I manually updated PUnkbuster today and when I got onto the private server alone I still lost connection after about 5 minutes if that.
