Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
First off. Thanks etc. TG is awesome - love it.
But.... players here are very demanding of their squad leaders. If you have a good one, the game's great - everyone communicating, working together, you defend your position, all is well.
Until they quit, and then people start leaving and joining the squad like bonkers to avoid the mantle of leader.
Why are you so afraid? Is it fear that people will start leaving the squad and you'll feel like a failure?
Come on, let it all out.

Re: Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
Im afraid of making poor decisions, having squad members leave because they dont want to defend. I cant handle the pressure damnit!

Re: Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
I like being SL but I don't want that position if I think I might need to drop mid-map.

Re: Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
I tend to play around the late evening, into the night. Due to the fact I don't live alone, I have to respect the fact that others nearby are trying to sleep. I'm not supposed to be using the microphone past 10, though I can usually manage to sneak by and use it until around 11. The last thing I want to do is be the squad leader who stays quiet (you really cant squad lead through chat).

Re: Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
I'm normally not a SL. I like being one when I have a team of people that know what they're doing and work together well like I had last night on Karkand, otherwise I don't like having to teach and explain things in detail to people.

Re: Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
I guess i have some sort of SL inferiority complex. I always think i'm doing a horrible job but then i look at the map afterward and we kept a defense point for a whole round or got best squad if we were on offense. I gress i just get nervous.

Re: Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
As a frequent Squad Leader I have my bad days and my good days... I think it happens to everybody...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. So here is a little secret. I am big into loyalty thing... Once that message pops up saying "Such and Such left your squad" I immediately check if he disconnected or if he got autoswitched or if he decieved me. Don't tell anybody now. It is my weakness. That is hard to see, a small pressure. But it builds up.
If they actually say something like "Im gonna join my in house squad, nice playing with you" that is nice. If you silently leave my squad, you just broke my heart. And if you come back crying I won;t take you back.
Solution? I cannot think of any. I guess keep them entertained. Educate them to use common sense be polite and let the SL know where you going.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another pressure is when the Squad members are soooo shy and holy, they don't wanna say anything to me. I am the one talking and talking giving orders. All they do is follow it exactly but no words at all...
Now then I start to think "Are they judging me? Are they too busy thinking? What are they thinking? We should ve had that flag, is it my fault we could not? Did I not do the right manuevers? I should ve stayed alive longer. They must be thinking that."
You see? Silence creates this awkward situation. It feels like I am going to the 25th floor in an elevator of an big corporation company, and I am wearing ganster style clothes while everybody else is wearing suits. The elevator is completely silent, but you feel people looking at you...
Solution? Once you get to know some of the TG ers things ease up. The shy-ers start talking. People crack jokes and talk about wines and women and barbies when the action is low on a defense.
More Solution? I ask questions. "Check out that N building." .......... "Is the North Building clear?" Most of the time I get answers. Once one person start talking others will join in as well... But lately some new guys does not even wanna push that B button.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well... One of the most stressful one is once your squad starts to disobey your orders. Sqaud members are everywhere, doing their things. Either they got left out of a ride or something.
Solution? So keep them together. As a rule of thumb I let them know if we are on foot, while moving I need to see you. If we are using transport I ask "Mobilize everybody... Everybody got a ride? OK. Make a column Tank first APC after him."
What if they are not following your orders? You gotta demand it from gentle to harsh. "Ok guys, welcome to the squad. Rules are simple always stcik with me."; "Guys stay together come on."; "So and so. I need you on me, or find a different squad." I kicked so many Squad members before I lost the numbers now. You gotta force it to some of these people.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Try SL ing. It is fun and rewarding job. Sure it can be stressful sometimes. But joke it off. Keep trying. Learn from other peoples' style. Squad Leader All the way......

Fun, fun and more fun. But do not be selfish. Provide some fun and you will receive some fun.

Re: Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
Exactly how i feel B. Especially about people leaving the squad unnanounced. If i see them on another squad that's not their in-house, it's a big hit to my pride.

Re: Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
What B said. I try to lighten things up a bit. I also try to communicate as much as I can with them. If we are on defense a lot or the commander has us doing things that the squad may be restless I ask if they are having fun. That is why we are playing this game right?
I will leave a squad under two circumstances. Bad SL (IMO) or my in house squad just showed up and invited me. If you leave my squad you can come back anytime. I figure if someone leaves they either don't like my style or they found a friend to play with. Either way we are here to have fun and I could care less why they leave. As long as they are having fun after they leave I don't care."Umm Deputy these aren't my pants" - Common alarm cry of the North American Crackhead

Re: Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
I'd lead if I had a mic - sadly, that's not the case.
And B, as a squadhopper on occasion, it's nothing personal. Just sometimes one squad's playing style doesn't suit my mood that particular evening - I get bloodthirsty. I know that's sort of skirting duty and all that stuff, but eh, it's just a game, and I play to have fun above all else. Which is why I hate squad leaders that bark orders at me or get pissed off if I do something wrong - it's just a game, and we're here to have fun.
EDIT: Oh, I'm much more of a grunt than a tactician - probably too aggressive to effectively squad lead.

Re: Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
I hated SL'ing cos I don't know what i'm doing.
My mind only works one way, kill kill and kill so more so its hard to get my head down and keep tabs on the situation but i've started SLing like I CO and its working better. I'm not "afraid" of it, I just didn't feel good enough to do the job, especially if its a 6man squad expected to capture and defend flags.
I like my small 3 man squads where I can keep tabs on everything and do the dirty behind the lines work or supporting the main squads where I don't feel my mistakes are so critical.

Re: Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
lol, Im deffinently not afraid of people leaving, seems like everytime I become squad leader half the team leaves, then the rest slowly leave....hmmmm, I wonder why
I usually dont like to lead, Im lazy and would just like to kill people instead of leading a squad to kill people"The Taoist sage has no ambitions, therefore he can never fail. He who never fails always succeeds. And he who always succeeds is all- powerful." -- Lao Tzu

Well see? It was a secret, Now everybody knows... The thing I never show it. It does kind of hit me softly here and there but never nothing serious. I don;t hold grudge, get angry or anything...

Re: Are you afraid of being a squad leader?
I join halfway through the map and all the squads are already set up. I can start my own but it's easiest just to join an existing one.
