Thumbs up Improvement Last Night - but still a ways to go.

    Hey people,

Being a newbie to the BF2 community (but not FPS/Tactical play) I feel the need to kinda of post some reports with the hopes of some of you more experienced guys lending some advice or tips.

Last night I played as medic at Karkand and Dragon Valley and saw a decent improvement in my TG BF2 gaming - lots of communication and great teamwork, particularly the movement from point to point. SL I believe alternated between Black Viper and Fehmart with SM's being myself, the Vegeet, and a couple other guys I can't remember. Scored more points than normal, more heals and revives and again good squad movement. Also, becoming more calm under pressure.

Here are some of the things I am still shaky on and I apologize to my squad for seeming like a total dunce at times, and SL'ers, if I don't do exactly what you want me to do, here's why lol:

    - Terminology of tactics/plans/objects in the map sometimes goes over my head. I am reading up on the guides here at TG and trying to familiarize myself with them.

    - Still familiarizing myself with the maps.

    - I still freak out in firefights and misclick a million times and usually die cuz of this.

    - I am novice with vehicles

Anyone else experience this at some point? I assume the old adage practice makes perfect applies here?

On this note, as a fanatical strategist and teamplayer, I have found TG to be the only server I can play on - ever! The other guys just don't get it man...

"Still familiarizing myself with the maps."

Agreed. "jimmy take your APC to the Gas station via the Northside" usually results in me asking for clarification of route or juts following someone.

"I still freak out in firefights and misclick a million times and usually die cuz of this."

Ditto. I think i may need to remap my keyboard to allow easier access. I often jam the wrong button trying to coruch, fire, press q to spot something and b to clarify the details via VOIP. Not enough fingers a lot of the time. I also tend to run out of ammo at inconvenient times so i need to work on that. I do use the G3 a lot though so i do have some excuse.

One of the things i struggle on is movement. When the squad is moving out quickly to make a surprise attack or quick flag capture i am often lagging behind with no sprint meter left or stuck in a ditch with my APC. Conversely when moving tactically i seem to be at the front taking the first hail of bullets. My presence is akin to the mining canaries of old. "oh, Jimmys dead, must be some danger ahead...."
This would suggest i need to pay more attention to my tactical map and improve general siutuatiional awareness.

    OH YEAH! Fresh MEAT!

You bet we've all been there (except Deveran of course, he was born l33t).. after a few months I'M still there.

After a I got a clue of how little knew, I started reading A LOT.. I started loading up empty servers and practicing EVERYTHING.

After you get some kit/time under your belt and you spend some more time catching on in the TG servers.. you'll be holding your own in no-time.

SOmetimes there is a 'Learn TG' Squad available on a round.. check them out too.. they are there to help.. I even still need to spend some time in a learning squad.. it's good for ya!

Abra runs a good tactics and strategies program once a week.. or at pre announced times.. check those out too.

And most of all WELCOME to TG! I think you'll find that if you are able to be a supporting member - you'll really enjoy the teamplay for a long time to come. TG has definately extended they playable life of this product for me.

I got the hang of the weapons right away. The jets followed with a joystick, and just yesterday i reconfigured my jet controls to allow me the look behind while i was fighting, which has already helped me out alot. The best thing is to pratice, and gun in a bomber to see how the pilots fly. When flying, try new things out, most people stay near the ground (i stay either extremly near to the ground or way up in the sky when fighting). Never stop moving around and never fly straight. The key is pratice.

March so you mic is better now?

I ve been playing since the demo in and out. TG is the place to know things... I guess it takes time... I still avoid jets after all these months never learned them.

Fun, fun and more fun. But do not be selfish. Provide some fun and you will receive some fun.

Oh yeah, B, it seems to be. I went out and bought a SWEET digital headset, USB connection. Was about $79 but WOW was it worth it! Amazing sound and my teamates said I was coming through ok soo...

It's funny tho, the VOIP calibration prgram in the instalation folder for BF2 doesn't pick it up. Prolly cuz it's UBS digi.

And yeah Jets are hard...man the rolliing and pitching messes me up.

Just have to know your 3D . You can do anything to the jets, rolls and flips without any problem, just pull up.

I was amazed at how poorly i played in SF, and i can only link it to the fact that I don't know the maps like i know BF2 maps. It makes such a big difference to be able to give quick info on where you are, where the enemy is, etc. that i almost can't function without it.

And i've never learned how to fly. I can be a gunner, but i was born with my feet on the ground, and that's how it's gunna stay.

Something else to consider is that you are going against some of the best players on the net when it comes to BF2. I am not very good at this game either but I play here %99.5 of the time. Be patient keep working at getting better. After a while go to a pubbie (I know the thought scares you) but just for a little while and you will see your improvement more there than here. These guys at TG are way better than the pubbie guys so you have a big mountain to climb to get better at TG. I still have a lot of mountain to climb also.

Wow, good example Jimmy...same for me but most case I'm too passive to even ask for clarification...

Same exact situation for me, always seem to be left behind and always first one getting sprayed. This is prolly due to advancing without really knowing a plan of attack. Or what you say below about situational awareness.

This would suggest i need to pay more attention to my tactical map and improve general siutuatiional awareness.

I find it very difficult to constantly have eyes in the back of my head.

Hey if an old fart like me can do it, you can for sure! LOL! :-)

@ P8riot Yeah man, I did the mini camp last week and will continue to attend them for sure. Also I will def keep an eye out for those Learn TG squads. Thanks!

@ Black Death Just got a joystick the other day and I have been experimenting with the best controls. Gonna pick up a gaming mouse after work today so I can VOIP from there and other options as well.

The joystick def makes flying easier but what do you have your Sensitivity, Yaw, and roll set so? My Yaw and roll are at 1.

Drizzid Yeah gaming here wil def raise the bar in pubs!

I know exACTLY what you mean. I'm still there somewhat, although, like Drizzid said, my skills have improved immensely just playing with these guys. I still get disoriented sometimes and misclick or fat-finger keys when the action gets hot. Just have to practice. I once loaded a LAN game and played on my own just to practice flying helos. I got better, but still won't fly during a game. Or be a squad leader. I still need to practice my shooting, moving, strategy and communicating. I don't want to end up joining a squad and hear people say "oh, great, skullcrack joined". Hell, they're probably saying that now...

At any rate, just practice, you'll get it. And play around with your key mappings to see if you can find a better, faster, easier configuration. And welcome to TG!

Thanks for the welcomes from everyone and yeah Skull, fat-fingering sucks! lol, never heard that term before but it's right on.

Also, I also fear the no one wanting you as squad leader thing but what can ya do - gotta get your feet wet somewhere.
