BF2 Noob??? well, thats how I feel.

I been in TG for a while playing World of Warcraft. I have been playing BF2 sense it came out, before that I played alot of BF:1942 and BF:V. However I have never played with such an orginzed group before and I am really trying to get up to par with you all. let me tell you going from playing Solo for a long time to playing with you all is a really big shock to the system. I really could use some help and understanding during this adjustment period.
My past style of play is to switch weapons tro what ever is needed at the time, If my flag is been overtaken by a tank or APC then I switch to Antitank, if I am being shot at by snipers I switch to sniper.....W/ you all I will need to adapt to playing whatever weapon I am told is needed instead of deciding myself, I will also need to listen closer to Squad Leaders for orders and such. I also need to adjust my sound properties so I can better hear the squad leaders as the way its set now I can barely hear them and if I am firing a weapon I can't hear them at all. Last thing is I need to learn the SOPs and the new lingo as well as learn the names of all the flags as there now used alot more than before.

Good luck! Just try to join a squad with a TG leading and let them know upfront your still learning the TG way. On the kit switching its probably best to stay the kit you've been assigned unless its apparent (like getting killed 3 times in a row by a tank) that the current kit-outs won't work. In that case just ask/tell the SL your switching to xyz temporarily.

You should be up to speed in our squads in no time

Headphones are the best to hear voices when playing. A microphone is useful, too. Communication is essential to maximize squad efficiency.

I'm good to go in the TG fashion with CS:S
I was hanging with some other dudes for the beginning of BF2 which caused me to spend way too little an amount of time here.
When I reappeared things had gotten big... and I was really feeling exactly what you're feeling.
I played BF42 and DC since the start, as well as BF:V.

Just be willing to follow orders and be open if a kit isn't one you're comfortable with.
Everyone is understanding and willing to help out.
Have fun and be thoughtful and respectful. You'll be fine.

I just wish whenever someone talked, even the SL at least, all sounds should go mute.

Fog of war, realism, the chaos of the battlefield...or whatever. It is impossible sometimes to hear the voip over game sounds, but I kinda like the 'tension' of that. Requires a little practiced radio discipline.

Isn't it a blast! You'll get it...I'm slowly starting to get it. As for getting up to par...well about month ago I think Mantis had something like ~750 hours on BF2, who knows what ungodly number it's up to now. So "up to par" can be a life altering goal.

    Cheers.

Hey Diablo, Just give it some time. Remember you are playing with some of the most talented players on the net and getting up to par may prove to be difficult. Just do the best you can, be a team player and follow your orders and it will all come. just let your SL know you are new and have lots to learn and if you have questions then ask. Good luck and hope to see you on the battlefield

Hey Diablo, welcome to the fold. If you'd like check out the Irregulars practice on saturday. We run the basics as well as some advanced tactics, vehicle training and weapons training. The practice starts at 2pm EST on the events server. And if you'd like a place to call home till you are up to par you can join the Irregulars. We hold scheduled paractices twice a month and we're trying to work into the mix some spur of the moment practices during the week. If you are interested in joining us saturday just post in the thread in the BF2 General Discussion board.

The invite is open to anyone who'd like to come.

    Diablo,

As far as hearing your Squad Leader and mates..

go into the audio controls for bf2 and turn down the game sounds (music and effects) and crank the VOIP volume then turn up the volume on your speakers.

I had the same problem until I did this. I levels out the overall sound.

Welcome Diablo! I feel your pain. I was so used to the lone wolf mentality you find on public servers. It took me a while to get used to the TG way. I worked on my communication skills first. I think the better communicator you are the better player you are. I find the “spot first, then shoot” tactic works best for me. There’s been plenty of times were I won't fire on an approaching enemy squad because its more important to let my squad mates know where they are. I usually get shot up but it’s very satisfying to watch my teammates tear up the approaching enemy squad. Spotting won’t help your stat line but your squad mates will appreciate it. It eventually made me a better TG player.

I know your goal is to make it as easy as possible on noobs but I got to say, I been reading page after page of Faq's, SOPs, Guids, Stickies,....... and I have read so much stuff I am even more lost than when I started. It started with the Irr threads and wound up in the WiKi (what the hell is a WiKi anyway?). I dont think you all realize how much stuff you all have. Every thread I read had links to at least one other thread, Good thing I have Tabbed browsing as I had about 12 tabs open at one point. I been reading as much as I can as I dont want another misunderstanding that gets me banned again But Damn, theres just to much!

Sorry, just venting some of this stress off before my mind implodes!

There is a pile of info here... no question.
Follow Bommando's advice above and deal with the extra stuff in time.

A little common sense goes a long way. Like they said just read the rules and then just hop right on the server and join a squad and follow his orders. You'll be fine. You're overthinking.

Playing on a TG server will give you enough experience to last a lifetime. Some of the main concepts that I've learned from being part of this community is communication and teamwork. Do what you're team is asked of you whether it be switching kits, or maneuvering strategically from one objective to another will make you a better player over time.
Although reading SOP's and rules will get you far, the true style of the gameplay promoted here at TG comes from practice and communication. Form up with squad led by a TG member, and for the most part you'll learn quickly and efficiently how to handle most situations on the battlefield.

Dont let the SOP documents scare you. When I first hopped on the TG Server I've never been to the forums and i had no problem whatsoever. If I wasnt playing according to rules fellow squad members would tell me. In fact playing on TG is actualy _playing_ BF2. Even if those SOPs may leave the impression youre about to ship off to boot camp
