    Angry Frustrated

Ok I hate to sound like a weenie (keep your comments clean) but I've been playing for a few months now and I am CONSTANTLY getting my butt handed to me in game. Don't get me wrong, I understand the in-house squads have been around for a while and those guys are good, but I seem to get rocked by everyone on the map. So I started playing on a public server to get in some practice during the day. Same thing there "Here's your butt Backlash, you must have dropped it when I shot the stuffin' out of you."

The things that drive me nuts are the "I come around a corner, see an enemy troop and dump a full magazine into his back, while I'm firing he turns around, raises his pistol and *bang*" scenes. I'm dead with one shot. Even if I use controlled bursts or pull up a sight picture and aim at the face or forehead I still only get about 1 kill for every 5-7 deaths.

I really need some advice on how to do this better or I'm not going to be worth a poopy during the scrim or other games. Thanks in advance for your time and patience.

    Re: Frustrated

Sometimes I get in that mode. I find it usually means that I am just rushing into things a bit too much. That and I suck.

Keep at it, Backlash. There are lots of good tips on the tactical wiki. They key is probably slowing down, learning to use the terrain to hide your movements more, and knowing when you want to engage that guy you see way over there.

When you're ready for advanced training, play America's Army for a bit. You'll get your butt handed to you there, too... but when you come back to BF2 you'll be shiny.

    See you on the battlefield.

    Re: Frustrated

Battlefield is entirely a game of position manipulation. Getting the heads up on your opponents by sneaking around, watching the UAV, and knowing good vantage points on the map will greatly improve your play.

But beyond that, everyone has crappy days, where you feel completely ineffective and incapable of accomplishing anything. It happens. The most important thing is having fun even if you're getting your ass handed to you. Not doing so well in combat? Trying playing medic or engineer for a round, trying blowing up enemy assets, etc. The game has many possible roles, and it's not always important to get lots of kills in a round.

all good stuff - to add my two cents...

first, remember that BF2 has been out for nearly a year now, so wherever you go you're going to run into people that have played litterally thousands of rounds... they've also been practicing

second, play it safe. make your goal NOT DYING rather than KILLING. Practice running away.. Practice hiding... Practice not putting yourself into situations where you've got a 50/50 chance of living/dying..

If, for example, you frequently get killed going around corners, don't run around corners! It sounds silly, but I'm serious! As much as possible, ONLY engage when you're relatively sure you're going to get the kill... keep an eye on your minimap, and try to anticipate where the enemy will go... how would you traverse the terrain if you were them?

in short - become a ninja

Good respnoses all, thanks. To answer some of the questions. My ping rate is less than 100 for the most part, sometimes it drops to below 30 although for a while there is was something like 2500? Must have been a glitch. I don't run around stuff anymore unless I'm the number two man in line or a medic rushing to a downed troop. I do play a lot of medic since I'm more valuable sneaking around and reviving folks than I am in the thick of things.

I played a couple maps after posting this and did a little better by slowing down and making "good" decisions instead of "snap" decisions. I just can't slow down too much with you guys cause we all know that a still target makes Mantis' ears perk up. Thanks again guys I might just have to skip a day or two of play and get back into it Friday and Saturday. BRING ON THE SCRIM! LEROY JENKINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't give up hope- I agree with Shakeyjake, a large part of it is probably lag, double check that you don't have any unnessary background tasks running and try turning down your settings on your video and audio if they are on high (this includes the sound options). Lastly try the obvious and stay away from high ping servers. Good luck man!

Edit* Seems we posted right about the same time and it looks like your hardware isn't the problem- take the advice that others wrote about teamwork and survival skills.

A lot of what bleak said is the main thing. Anticipating opponents moves is what makes the difference.

I like what the Dude said. Go with what works.
bleak had a good comment, try other kits and get practice else, doing so will maybe get you over your unlucky streak.

I have been thinking about making a thread on atributes on the Ace players.
    Ping
    hardware
    twitch
    tactics
    squad members or team mates
    personality

these are just some of the atributes i have brain stormed.

I think Kenny Rogers "Gambler" works well for haveing a health kill/deat ratio.

Know when to hold them: If you have a tactical advantage use it. Seeing them first, having height advantage, guys backing you up.

know when to fold them: This is breaking contact or not engaging after seeing the enemy. For example, if you have a shotgun and you see someone mid range to not engage yet. Wait for them to get perhaps closer. However, if teamates are around spot them and get an assist. Other examples are being really hurt and not engaging an enemy. they could react to your position and shoot you.

Know when to run: Get the crap out of there, it is too hot. Leap frog or throw smoke down. anything to break contact. Maybe the enemy will die of a heart attack chasing you. Or perhaps by a team mate.

Finally, reinvent your personality. You may be a hard charger by nature.

Not that i am even an average player, but do not rely heavy on the seeing the enemy and laying prone then zoom in tactic. Many times players do this too close. Croucth and strife them without being in zoom.
Aim, high. Aim upper torso, the recol will raise the gun barrel and make skull contact. Use this if the enemy does not see you. Practice on single fire mode with this also.
Aim mid torso (not in zoom mode) and fire if in close range. If they lay down, croutch, or remain standing your fire arm will be in the best spot to make the corrections.

Get in a habit of randamly pressing the crouthc button when moving. This could save your life.

Practice is only good if your doing it right.

    Fair thee well.

Also one little quick thing, BF is not like CS, the map are wide open and not very linear. So when you see you squadmates fighting, try to flank them from either side. Try to use the terrain to hide where you are going and backstab the enemy. Easy kills

    Re: Frustrated

You've definitely received good advice. Figure out where you are shooting when you are getting kills so that you can repeat it. Get into a squad of solid players and pay attention to what they are doing. Stay with the group mentality, you will live if you have teammates nearby. You will die if you charge a squad on your own.

When you get rolled, figure out what it was that let the enemy have the upper hand. Then copy it. Learn the maps so that you can figure out what kind of hornets nest you are walking into (Armor, sniper roosts). Play smart and stay off the main hunting paths. Perhaps spend more time working on infiltrating back lines in order to flip flags and attack people unaware.

I try to keep those kinds of things in mind, but then try to figure out what advantages you have with that med kit too (Drop med packs at points before firing).

Or do like I do, and get yourself a lucky rabbits foot... Well lucky for me... Unlucky for the rabbit...

    Re: Frustrated

Try experimenting with single shot/burst mode. It was the thing which improved my play the most. I like to keep my rifles on single shot most of the time and remapped the primary key to my mouse so that i can quickly switch to burst or full auto when i turn a corner. You might prefer to use burst as your primary but its worth playing with both to see which suits your style most.

Also remember there are disparities in body armour between kits. If you are a medic and run into an Assault or support kit you could trade equal shots but you would die first. You might already be equalling others in those close fights but it just seems you are coming out worst.

Grenade. You've got quite a few so you can always lob one into an area you are suspicous of or that the UAV shows is hot.

Keep practicing. It really takes a while to start honing the little things that make a big difference, like terrain squad coordination and other points people have mentioned. I still get dominated in many one on ones as i just dont have the twitch of others but you can make up for that in other ways.

    Re: Frustrated

I'll give you 2 tips for cornering.

1 Roll from behind the corner.

This is quite effective, since you come around the corner nearly prone (smaller target), yet you move sideways quite fast. I use this very effectively when I suspect someone is not far away behind a corner. A perfect surprise attack.

    2 Slice the pie.

A bit difficult to explain, this is the iofficial US Army method of getting round a corner. Say that you are turning left around a corner. With this technique you will put the crosshairs just to the right of the corner, then you (either prone crouched or standing) push your button to strafe to the right, while maintaining your crosshairs on the same position, thus causing you to turn around the corner while all the time having your crosshairs fixed where enemys will appear.

This technique allows you to scan both close and far away, and divide the zone of danger up into small parts. What you do is turn the corner a bit, scan near, then far (rooftops etc.) Then turn the corner a bit more, repeat till you have sliced all of the pie.
Another benefit of this is: you can scan those dangerous rooftops, but when an enemy suddenly pops up from behind the corner, you are ready for him. Just hit fire and down he goes .... often.

Hope you this can help if you didn't already know.

I feel your pain Backlash, I guess we are "Brothers in dis-armed !"

I think it is a perspective thing, everybody is getting killed out there.
You just really feel it when its you !!!!!

I too, am still working on getting out of "Rambo" mode, don't think
of it as sneaking around, but being cautious.

    Hang tough.
