Ive never sat and looked at the clock to gauge exactly how long it takes, but depending on the map it seems to be anywhere from 3-5 minutes.

Depending on the map, and how fast my computer feels like being today, I MAY get in with as much as 30 seconds remaining on the timer. Other times, by the time I load the game has started already and I get to watch the first Arty strike on my spawn point just as I get in.

Re: How long does it take to load a new map?

I think a lot depends on the video settings themselves as well. I have an "OK" system and whenever I patch it resets my settings to medium/low it takes less than 10 seconds to load a map. I don't have everything set that way, so it takes longer...

The higher the settings, the more crap is being loaded into your RAM, which explains longer map loading times.

I've never timed it but there's normally around 1 minute and 45 seconds left of "Commander Election" time when I get in-game...

Yah, I find that textures set on high instead of medium realllllly extends load times

Actually what happens is the guilt builds itself up inside of you until it reaches critical mass, then gives a little shake and turns you inside out in one fast motion. When you're done you look like this:

My map load times are about average ... 35-40 sec. Most of the time I just drink my beer, since the medics are getting so good around here I don't have enough time in game.

The big difference in verifying client data for me was RAM. I went from 2 to 4 GB and cut that part of the load by 80%.

Re: How long does it take to load a new map?

My load times were extremely long when I had 512mb of ram, then I stepped up to 2gb, and it added a noticable difference, but the verifying is still on slowish' side. I've got s/ata 150 harddrive @ 7200rpm, which is why I think it may take a little longer than others with the faster s/ata harddrives.

also for a little tip, make sure your primary and secondary ide channels are set to DMA if available, not to PIO.

Wow, that makes a lot of sense. It takes me longer to load since I had upgraded my graphic card, which I had thus set to higher settings. The fastest I've ever loaded was to catch the last 10 seconds of the timer (which is very rare from me). Usually the game has already started and I have either a) been made squade leader (sigh), b) have been given orders by the squad leader but never heard them because I'm still loading or c) have been abandoned by the entire squad, thus leaving me to find a new home.

A long island iced tea is doable if i let the toilet break go as is a margarita. Singapore slings are a little more complex. To complete one requires the use of the death spawner to sprint to the kitchen and line up bottles and squeeze some lemons and limes mid game. Load time is used to compile everything but even then it only gives a 5-10sec reserve in case of blender difficulties. I generally stay away from the more complex styles of cocktails while SLing.

If I do something ambitious like the above for multiple rounds i normally go for a smalller cocktail in a martini glass. At least that way i do not strain my bladder unduly until the next time i fancy something simple and can fit a toilet run into the same load. Tactical drinking i call it.
Single malts uncomplicate things like this and give you a great outlook on the game.

The time for calm and rational discussion has passed. Now is the time for senseless bickering.

No, Sir! Once you get 2gb of ram, you'll notice you will not get that huge stuttering when you first join the game. I had 512mb of ram once, I remember this all to well. I couldn't even use the higher video settings, and I could support them, but couldn't use them because of the 512mb of ram, well it wouldn't have it. Once you goto 2gb, it will load up much faster, the verifying part may still be slow, but at least you'll load faster, and get in the game quicker.

Yeah, having 512mb ram sucks, but I just can't be bothered to upgrade. As long as the game plays, I'm happy.
