Re: Ranked Server? Frank Discussion.
This is where I had rented my box at: http://www.insomnia365.com/
Prices seem to have gone up a little bit but it's nowhere near $500+ a month (unless there's a 1 time setup fee).
Insomnia is a satelite of The Planet, which is where I believe TG hosts some of it's various game servers?

Re: Ranked Server? Frank Discussion.
Guys, we are not getting a ranked server here, for all the reasons listed in this thread.
With the plethora of games on the horizon, a ranked server, having never made sense for us in the first place, certainly would make no sense now. When 2142 comes out, we may have no choice but to go ranked, but that will be determined then. There are some nice BF2 mods that are maturing which give us more options. Quake Wars will be along in 2007 as well.
Just as Desert Combat made 1942 obsolete for many gamers, some mod is going to come along to make standard BF2 obsolete as well. Be assured that TG will provide a server for it, thanks to all of the Supporting Members we have here.

Re: Ranked Server? Frank Discussion.
Sorry, I was just pointing out pricing for one wasn't standard across the board for all servers.
I don't support the idea of ranking the server anyways. That's why I'm at TG!!

I don't agree. You forget the availability of unlocks as a factor.

Unlocks are nice if everybody has them, then its balanced.

Re: Ranked Server? Frank Discussion.
I personally don't see the appeal of unlocks apart from balancing things when the standard issue weapons are not balanced (Sumluv reminded me about the US/MEC sniper rifles). Otherwise, I think unlocks are intended to create imbalance. I could be wrong.

Re: Ranked Server? Frank Discussion.
I thought the sniper rifle difference is balanced out by the AK being much better than the M16 in almost every situation. There are a few situations where an M16 is preferable, but that's so with the Opfor sniper rifles too.

Re: Ranked Server? Frank Discussion.
It doesn't seem that many of the minuses are valid and the pluses seem worth the shot. If WOLFServers has 64 player ranked servers for $256/mo - and that's top of the line - and Faultline had one (two?) running for less than that, then it seems that the cost issue is even less of an issue.

I'm not trying to be cantankerous, just making some logical points where possible and helping out. If FCW can have a reasonably smacktardless server, then we can have a great one. So... it is possible to go ranked one night a week then. Everything you said was presumed by everyone in the thread to be true; note that I linked to the monthly rates for ranked servers.

Re: Ranked Server? Frank Discussion.
Ignoring all the arguments against having a ranked server, would this server rental allow our massive amount of customization when running unranked?

No, and that's one of the sticking points.

Re: Ranked Server? Frank Discussion.
We had some really good games last night, surprised we didn't have more turnout. We also have a large amount of people who own the boosters, too bad we can't get them to show up on the same night....we'd have the same good games on a new map.

Re: Ranked Server? Frank Discussion.
For me all the talk of ranked servers (and I have engaged in a lot, right back to the early days of BF2 here where we only hosted a demo server that ran 10 minutes rounds of Oman) that it all came down to custom content.
There are a lot of small additions that has been made, from admin helping tools (I'd spend 10% of any gaming night kicking people for SM's to get on whilst trying to lead a squad), to enforcing people to stay in a squad which I personally think is critical to our style of gameplay. I'm happy to debate any other issue (popularity, unlocks etc) but essentially it comes exclusively down to this: If we used a ranked server we would have no ability to control the server to the level of gameplay that we desire here.
If I wanted to jump on our server, not join a squad, but run around with a knife all day and lose a hundred tickets for my team because a knife is not a great weapon to use exclusively, then I would be allowed to do that because it is against EA's rules to enforce special 'house rules' on ranked servers. This was highlighted by some ranked servers having pistol and knife only rules. These forced people to fight at close range and resulted in much higher numbers of kills and deaths which, as you do not lose points for dying, resulted in everyone scoring a lot more points than on a normal server. EA delisted these servers.
