    Making low population games enjoyable

One of the challenges we have now with the reduced interest in BF2 is finding a way to get people to WANT to be on the server when there are only 10 players. This would be something which would be an automatic server mod, applied when the population is low. If this is done well, I think it will lead to servers which are full more frequently, and certainly earlier in the evening.

I have several ideas myself, but I want to see what you guys come up with. Ideas which work well with squad cooperation are preferred over things like buggy races, but I am open to all ideas at this point.

    An example:
    - 1 randomly chosen capturable flag, infantry only, no CO assets, teams cannot be capped out

Hmm...is there a way to "hide" what flag is capturable? Then you could have a small group of people running around an Urban environment playing treasure hunt for "that" flag. And bouncing in to other Treasure hunting teams. Once you find that one flag...every body and their brother will be attacking it/defending it in force. Just an idea. Probably be better on a 32 or less map. Not sure, just an idea.

I really like the infantry only and no assessts idea. Especially if it was applied to games with less than 16 players. It would eliminate the age old small games "rules" debate.

Yes, in fact one of the major limitations is that I cannot give a flag the UCB sign on people's mini-maps. So the capturable flag will never be known unless it is spammed in chat or something.

I like the ideas about rules for small server population.....but this discussion will inevitably lead back to the small game thread that was so hot a few months back. Folllowing the rules is completely voluntary and when new players come on they don't know about the small engagement rules--and then unknowkingly break them...

Remove the "must be in squad" rule? (I am ducking now.)

How would that help? If anything it'd make things worse...

Not really. Icky is talking about a script (my guess) based on population that will take effect, basically "forcing" small team rules. No debate now. Anotherwords, less than 20 people we will remove armor, CO assets, and make certain flags UCB's (although it won't show up on your minimap, they would probably be the ones you initially spawn at).

This is NOT about setting rules which can be broken. Anything which is done will be a server-side change and will be automatic (with admin override).

We won't remove the squadless or idle kicks, but hopefully you will want to be on the server AND playing. Sometimes when I jump on the server and I can't quite play yet, I just form a squad called AFK and I spawn in an out-of-the-way place. This gets you a 10-minute break and does no harm. Beware the idle kick though.

I will add, always remove attack helos unless it's a 32 player map and the population goes over 40.

Get 'er done icky! lol. I'm in for sure, nothing more frustrating then trying to coordinate small team rules right before their commander drops arty on our entire team of four people (although this is hilarious with the right group of people who are just messing around after hours so to speak- I won't mention any names *ahem phenom and clawhammer). Plus I'm tired of winning the same ol' shock paddling, knife wars, red barrel roulette and buggy races games night after night lol.

Re: Making low population games enjoyable

Is this seriously doable??? I would love to try a treasre hunt flag map, and wouldn't care how many people...well, I would prefer at least 6 LOL, but it might be fun. Yeah you would have to make it an infantry only map. What about setting something like that up for a TACMOD map for the early hours as well, I was thinking about Inshail??? Heheh that might be interesting.

Re: Making low population games enjoyable

One thing we used to do on low turnout members only nights were to select a small size map, agree to the terms on the game on teamspeak and go to it.

    Something like:

    Oman
    No Air
    Construction Flag only
    No Armor
    No CO.

Get members of inhouse squads together on terms like that, and you have tons of fun.

I never understand this. A few nights ago (early evening) there were about 10 or 12 people on the server and someone went commander (with a TG tag no less). They asked "Can someone fix my assets?" I had removed them, and when this is done, they are DONE for the entire round. With that few people why on earth would anyone want arty and uav? Kind of takes the fun out of it with that few people.

If you can get something close to what we usually use for 'small team rules,' that would be awesome. Nor armor, maximum of one APC per side, no choppers of any kind, no assetts of any kind, and of course, each team gets a UCB.
