Is vanilla BF2 about to vanish?

I just wanted to see what people thought about where things are going to go from here in terms of gamer interest. PoE2 will be revving up at the end of the week and it is very easy to believe that it will attract lots of interest. Is anyone still going to long for vanilla BF2 if nobody is playing it here at TG? Is this going to be the last week of vanilla BF2 at TG?

I think the answers are easy to guess, but I want to know what your thoughts are.

Interesting question. If the mod is as good as I think it will be, POE2 will attract a lot of attention (as mentioned in another thread). With lack of competition and the TG style of game play, I think (or I hope) will attract large crowds, and perhaps some who may have left because they did not want to buy the 2 add-ons. Given, I don't have any dislike for vanilla, but I've been waiting for good total conversion BF2 mods for a long time and a server that plays it the way it should. I am definitely going to be drawn to this.

If POE2 is balanced and plays as the game BF2 should have originally been, then I wouldn't look back. BF2 is a good game that brought many of us together, but it always had it's problems. There is still much potential to the game and I believe that other modders will have the chance to reach it.

Well, in a perfect world I'd tell you that I can't wait to dive into every good total conversion mod, Armed Assault, and BF2142 (and probably GR:AW once the dedicated server files are released), but my freshmen year of high school is about to begin and I am taking all honors. Stack that on top of cross-country this fall, I probably am not going to game much other than summer (and the occasional break). I am probably going to uninstall most of my games (sans BF2 and it's subsequent mods) because they are only going to serve as a distraction To answer your question, I don't think vanillia is going to vanish, but with chocolate, stawberry, blue moon, and chocolate chip cookie dough on the way, I think it's going to have a hard time keeping up.

I say keep BF2V. I think many people here still like playing it, and I am one of them.

I have no experience with POE2, but my own interest in vanilla BF2 has not decreased much. It still holds loads of fun for me.

I hope not. I still love playing vanilla. You'll always find a epic battle on some random night that just draws you back into things. What I hope vanishes are the booster maps. I know as of late I've seen very little of them, so let's keep it that way for good. Can't you guys put POE on server 2 and leave server 1 as vanilla?

This isn't a poll. I am more interested in hearing what people *think* will happen. Lots of people like vanilla right now.

As an example, when SF came out, it wasn't very spectacular, and so it didn't draw many people. It drew almost 0 NEW people. The result was that it didn't last very long. Had it been amazingly fun with lots of new maps and new toys to use on the existing maps, it would have taken over completely and we wouldn't even be talking about vanilla BF2 today other than in a historical sense.

I think that if we're one of few servers hosting PoE2, we're going to draw in a lot of new, like minded people who don't care about things like rankings and unlocks and just want to have some great gameplay. I personally don't care what mod we play, as long as people are willing to have an open mind and work with it a little bit, and (gasp) try something new.

Ill download the mods and probably play them, but will still make most of my BF2ing on the TG server. If theres a LOT of interest in a particular mod AND the vanilla server becomes empty because of it, we could just merge over. Id be surprised if that turns out to be the case, though.

Re: Is vanilla BF2 about to vanish?

SF didn't draw many people (I think) because it hardly set itself apart at all from Vanilla BF2. Adding grappling hooks and zip lines, and the night maps was a change, but the core gameplay mechanics were all still the same. I think the night maps were very poorly implemented as well.

But PoE2 is going to be a full conversion, and judging by the TBF2 preview it is going to be a departure from BF2. Which is good for me because I've been forcing myself to get back into BF2. I need a good change. I realize it's not that way for most here, but I am looking forward to PoE2, and I'm hoping TG will support it.

I think initially the BF2 server will be slow but PoE2 should bring in alot of new faces, all of whom will already own BF2. Possibly enough to run both servers at full or near capacity. That will be a wait and see. It would be nice to have the option of joining either server and having lots of like-minded folks to play with.

Re: Is vanilla BF2 about to vanish?

What I'm really concerned about is how much Bf2 is gonna wither away once BF2142 comes out ....

Especially /w regards to TacMOD... its really starting to mature and I"m enjoying those games more now... pity its gonna lose its apeal with BF2142...

Re: Is vanilla BF2 about to vanish?

Hmm.. I personally am really ready for a change for the better, and I expect that POE2 will be that. I have mixed feelings with 2142, but next year should bring more BF2 mods to the table, like DC and FH.

As long as regular BF2 is saddled with its ranking system, it will never be able to become the game it could be.

So, while the community here will ultimately decide on what servers we run at TG, I can see us one day running two populated servers, and neither one of them being vanilla BF2.
