Aggressive or suggestive SL?
I get pushy when I SL. I keep saying things like "get on the flag!" and "get in there!" and generally become a drill sergeant. Basically I'm very authoritative.
Someone seemed to get sort of pissed at me when I told him to do something over VoIP the other day. He got all exasperated and defensive. Which I sort of LOLed at because It's a game and I'm just 'roleplaying'.
My question is do you guys generally like or dislike an authoritative SL? I hate it when I join a squad and noone is talking, especially the SL. Weak SL's are ones that don't seem to have definitive plans beyond where we are attacking/defending - at least to me. Maybe I'm alone here.
I love it when I'm told exactly what to do, what kit to play as, what role I play in the attack/defense, where to stand, when to breathe.. everything. Because, to me, that SL knows what he wants to do, whether I agree with it or not is immaterial. I'm following orders.
Things that peeve me:
1. People that decide to "do their own thing". Seriously, I need all 6 of us together at all times, unless given an order to do something else. As far as I'm concerned, I am your ONLY available spawn point unless ordered otherwise. On the private server MnM of all places, a TGer was in my squad trying to do some sort of re-direct attack from a different side, while the other 5 of us were back at base. I almost called him out, but decided not too. Please don't do this in my squad.
2. Don't question what I'm doing. Suggestions are ok, but offer it up as an idea - not in the context of "this is what we should do". When I'm SLing, I'm doing many things at once. I'm computing a lot of information concurrently. I'm factoring in flags we have, watching where other squads are going (because we never have commanders grr), keeping an eye on bleed, deciding what flags to take or defend, etc. So maybe I'm taking something into consideration that your idea doesn't. Don't get offended if I don't bite.
Thats it.
P.S - Perfect squad yesterday: I only specifically remember Clodhopper and Fallosophy being in it. But we basically sat at a flag on defense for the majority of the round doing nothing. We won because we bled them out and kept them from easy capping that flag. It was boring, but the two or three non TGers in it followed CLod and Fall's example and were a well oiled machine of death.

Re: Aggressive or suggestive SL?
I prefer:
1) A squad leader that gives orders.
2) Squad members that follow orders.
I dislike:
1) Squad leaders that don't provide leadership.
2) Squad members that always throw in their "well, how about if I do this instead..."
I don't mind suggestions either, but when it's CONSTANT second-guessing everything you do it gets quite irritating.

Re: Aggressive or suggestive SL?
Good thread
Personaly I give orders pretty much constantly,I find people like this as long as;
>> I convey strongly that I expect the squad to work together toward objectives
>> I praise success of the squad & an individual's contribution "good job on the TOW soldiername"
>> I don't criticise anything at all, I say "nevermind", "worth a try"
>> I am open to good suggestions
>> I am attentive to boredom thresholds (uneventful defence), and mix it up as needed
Here at TG we have become accustomed to a high standard.
With experienced players there is room for "suggestion" because you know they can make that idea work without you supervising it all

Re: Aggressive or suggestive SL?
How much you have to say also depends on the squad. A few times I have been in a squad that was full of a bunch of guys who usually squad lead. Those are the interesting ones to be in because I find that less gets said and it just "gets done".

Re: Aggressive or suggestive SL?
I'm not much of a squad leader specifically because I'm not a very authoritative or talkative person, which is the kind of squad leader I prefer. Plus, people just don't seem to listen to me when I lead :/ . It's kind of frustrating. As far as giving suggestions, I don't mind if my squad members give them, but they shouldn't be surprised if I flat out say no.

@bleak.
You are a cunning warrior, so your actions for the squad are very tactical.
Plus your a good shot.
The only thing that comes over your radio is important stuff when bleak is talking.

Re: Aggressive or suggestive SL?
I like either style of SL as long as I am getting direction. When it comes to SL's that give ton's of orders John CANavar is one of the best. It's always a pleasure to be in his squad. Other SL's are much more "loose" and that is fine too. I just want a bit more information than "attack here!".

Deveran aside, I don't think I've ever heard an SL who gives too much instruction.

Re: Aggressive or suggestive SL?
I like all the different styles of SL'ing and that is exactly what makes each and every round unique for me as a SM. I think it adds a sense of personal touch to the way how things are getting done, similar to how different chefs will cook the same meal differently. I guess this is why we like playing with real people vs bots.
The interesting thing is, I find that people will usually lead the way they would like to be leaded, so if you like a certain style of how a particular SL leads, odds are they will enjoy playing in your squad too.Last edited by RocketPunch; 08-31-2006 at 09:37 PM.

Re: Aggressive or suggestive SL?
I think it's a kind of art form to be non-threatening and assertive at the same time. The people who can do that usually have the most success in management roles in my opinion. I definitely don't have this talent.

Re: Aggressive or suggestive SL?
While things might "get done" on occasion, ive found that squads full of squad leaders generally involve way too many suggestions and way too much bickering for the actual SL to be as effective as he would be with regular squad members.

Re: Aggressive or suggestive SL?
Me and Bleak seem to be of the same personality. On the rare times when I am SL I just seem to have a difficult time thinking on my feet. 'What do I do? Where do we go'...When everyone's asking me what to do and I don't know what to say then that's when I get pissed at myself.

Re: Aggressive or suggestive SL?
I definately agree that people tend to lead squads like the squad leaders that they like. For example, I enjoy playing with Exploding_Silver a lot, so somehow when I started leading squads, I started emulating his ability to assign people certain tasks/positions and be clear on specific objectives. From how much people like to do the SL dance at the beginning of rounds, I have found that most SM's don't want to take on the responsibility of figuring out what to do or having the well-being of 5 other peoples in their hands. For example, I don't exactly employ the best tactics at times, but since I will give people specific orders and occassionally kit assignments, people tend to stick around since the pressure to make decisions is taken off of them and they can enjoy their game.
That, and probably to continue to hear the hilarity of my "NOOOOO!!!!"s and "Why?!???!??"s.
