On the topic of "ratting someone out"
Ok guys I've run into a delima. Several times over the last few days (after POE got the 2006 mod of the year) we've had a huge surge in "new" players. Most of these guys are public server players and a lot of them are really really good. On the down side most of them bunny hop like crazy. I don't like ratting somone out to an admin because they jump once or twice but any time I tell them in chat to "please stop bunny hopping" I get responses like "learn to shoot straight noob" or "F@#$ YOU NOOB!!!!" and my other favorite "Yeah whatever!!". Now many of these guys are ranking up near the top of the score board with outstanding K/D ratios and I want them to hang around and learn our ways. They can really help in the scrims with the skills they have. I have also noticed that the ban hammer is out in force on these folks.
I know we have a certain way of playing here and that style is the main reason why I play. Is there a way we can convince these people to stop what they are doing and convert them to our way of gaming? I HATE ratting someone out to an admin, that and it takes time away from the admins gaming when they have to stop and W/K/B someone.
Thoughts? Advice? Something??

JOin their squad, invite them to join yours and that way you can show them the TG way. Ultimately, that's going to be the best learning process for them.
It goes back to Santa's thread about spreading out the TG Goodness.

Re: On the topic of "ratting someone out"
If you get a seriously hostile response from someone over a bunny hopping reminder, then they will probably never belong at TG. Give us their name and we will have no problem with issuing a quick ban. Don't be concerned over punishing what you see as potentially solid members of the community.
We have admin policies that I believe do an excellent job of filtering out the good from the bad. A first ban is nothing more than a heads-up for players who have a future at TG. For others, it is a goodbye and good riddance.
And btw, twitch skill in the game is the LAST thing we care about when getting new people here at TG. I would rather lose every scrim than play with a bunch of idiots who happen to be good at video games.Peace through fear... since 1947!

Re: On the topic of "ratting someone out"
Well said, icky.
It's been my experience that people rarely (if ever) get banned for bunnyhopping, but do get banned when they show their backside when reacting to warnings. If someone acts out after being warned, then a kick or ban is certain, depending on the particulars of the situation. The mature ones worth going after will PM an admin with an explanaition and are almost always given another shot. The ones we don't want are those that send hostile PMs to admins or post flame threads in the forums. In my opinion, this method has been effective in keeping a healthy, mature server population here.Beatnik

Re: On the topic of "ratting someone out"
Yeah most of the time when I get a nasty response that person is banned in the next few seconds.
I know that twitch isn't what we're looking for but it's a damn good foundation for what we do. You can teach teamwork but twitch only comes from hours upon hours of game play. I'd like to think that those with the good twitch can be taught the good game play and will become an asset to us in the future. I just hate losing someone that might become a supporting member........
If they would just listen!

Re: On the topic of "ratting someone out"
I had a situation VAGUELY similar to this in real life. I explained to the individual that he needed to change his ways or repercussions were going to come down. This guy is a good friend of mine so I felt obligated to give him a heads up. But I left it at that. If he doesn't change his ways then it is on him.
And that is the way that I believe this issue should be handled. If you can relay to the bunny-hopper that his methods are against TG rules, then do so. Personally, I hate bunny-hoppers and will tell the admin what I have seen immediately. The reason for this is because it states, when a person logs on to the server, that bunny hopping is not allowed. Forget their skills. Forget what kind of asset they can be to TG. Let the admins handle it.

Re: On the topic of "ratting someone out"
Cing I have to disagree with you here. Although I agree that maturity and a desire for team play "should" be the foundation, most of these players have a great sense of where the enemy is and where to fire and that makes them an asset. I joined TG before I ever even fired a shot online due to the influence of a co-worker and friend. I had maturity and teamwork in mind when I joined (and paid to support) this community but it has taken MONTHS to get any kind of twitch.
Most of them joined because our server was full and found that their skills were needed here. Some of them hopped a little and got warned, most learned and stayed. These folks didn't come here looking for maturity and teamwork, they have the skills to survive and thrive. TG might give them an outlet to reach towards maturity and teamwork and they might be better players for that education. I think we should cultivate those that are a little on the "pubbie" side and bring them to the light that is TG.
I see the best in all people, such is my curse, but I want to offer "pubbies" the same chance that I was given when I ponied up my 90$ a year.
TG for life.................................

Re: On the topic of "ratting someone out"
Backlash, we are not trying to build an uber-clan here. We are trying to provide a haven of maturity. If that happens to draw in good players who are also looking for a mature environment, then that's fine, but it isn't important. We don't even try to put our best players in scrims.
Trust me, when it comes to the sentiment of giving everyone a chance, I am right there with you. I know that people come into the shelter of TG from the harsh world where a different type of behaviour is expected and accepted. This is why we are so prone to giving people multiple chances.
There are many regulars on our server who started out as guys who got warned, kicked, and banned. That's just the admin way of saying "Welcome to TG! We have rules, and we enforce them!"

Re: On the topic of "ratting someone out"
For me, TG has been a haven for exactly what icky was talking about. I enjoy gaming at a place where there is a priority on teamwork and skill and where hacks or cheating the system are not tolerated. While I was warned in the past about a jihad jeep, the TG guys took the time to explain it and give me a chance to try a new style. You guys are on to something good here.
Keep practicing the tough love. The right people will stay and the rest will move on.

Re: On the topic of "ratting someone out"
The bunny hopping, but more so the rude responses should take away any doubts in your mind imo.
If I see someone do something against the rules, I usually notify them in chat as well, If I see them do it again, I will warn an admin if I can through chat. But If they respond to a kind reminder of the local rules with such an attitude, surely they cannot be TG material.
Keep in mind Backlash that notifying an admin does not necessarily mean they will be kicked or banned. In my experience by the way typing "x plz stop bunnyhopping it is not allowed" is a lot less effective then typing "ADMIN x is bunnyhopping", which in turn is a lot less friendly.
One of the main reasons I play at TG is that you are respected for your attitude in game, and not primarily for your skill.
When one dies on TG, one does not read "GRAA!! UBER 733t PWNAGE!! in chat. What it's like to play online games as a grown-up:http://s3.amazonaws.com/theoatmeal-i...e_gaming/1.jpg

Re: On the topic of "ratting someone out"
When you let an admin know about a problem player, you're not "ratting out" the player. You're protecting our servers and our way of playing.
