    Question Parachuting from buildings

    Hi all,

Just a quick thought re realism in game...since you all don't like people bunny-hopping, isn't it a step backwards to allow people to parachute from tall buildings?

Seems to me, they're not *quite* high enough for base-jumping...

    Discuss.

agreed but it's part of the game engine so what do you do but go along to get along.

I've been playing lots of PRM lately and only the spec ops guys have parachutes...in fact I think the latest mod of PRM removes it from even them and only pilots now have parachutes.

I agree that this is one of those "goofy" things in BF2, and it would probably be better without it. But as it stands, alot would have to change before you could take it away. There are too many ways to end up on top of a structure with no way down without a chute. Unless you revamp everything to make sure there is an alternative, it is sort of a necessary evil.

It would have made sense that the functionality was never included. Then the maps and such would have been desinged accordingly. To try and remove it now, would require a massive revamp, or cause as many problems as it solves.

I've always disliked the unrealistic jumping and parachuting in the game. I can't imagine why they implemented it that way, other than the fact that climbing down a ladder is slow.

Speaking of realism... why would a pilot have a chute? Is that realistic?

Yeah, I realise it can't be *removed* from game, my point was, I'm surprised it's *allowed*, since bunnyhopping is not (which is also an unremoveable feature of the engine). Just a thought...

I see your point. Enforcement would be a bitch though. You would have to consider every case in terms of if there is another way off of the structure...i.e. ladder or stairway.

However, I wouldn't give it the same wieght as bunnyhopping. Both screw up the realism aspect sure, but TG has always said that you have to wiegh the realism vs fun and what can be enforced. But bunnyhopping to my understanding goes beyond being unrealistic to being an exploit of the game engine/client-server interaction.

Hopping around in real life would make you only slightly harder to hit in real life CQC. In the game, it jacks up the hitbox detection so bad it's like the guy becomes Neo in the Matrix, miraculously dodging bullets in mid air faster than the eye can see.

So parachutes are unrealistic and kinda dumb, but only Rarely provide an unfair advantage. Bunny hopping is unrealistic and actually screws up the game.

I remember in the GI Joe cartoons, because they could never show anyone dying, anytime any sort of aircraft was destroyed you always saw the pilot an instant later with a parachute. So yes I would say it is quite realistic.

Actually climbing down a ladder is fast try hitting the shift key while going down, I know I am going to regret giving away this elite manuever.

I just walk off the edge of the building and get a medkit, or a revive if it was a little too tall. Parachutes and ladders are too complicated.
