Tweaking as an advantage...?
Hey folks,
Was just reading the BF2 tweak guide at:
http://www.tweakguides.com/BF2_5.html
I haven't had the chance to test yet (I will when I get home), but it seems to me that turning off certain graphical features could give you a major advantage in game. Specifically, turning "light" to low will result in no fixed-shadow maps for buildings (I tend to hide in these shadows occasionally - someone with light at the low setting wouldn't even *see* these shadows), and turning "terrain" to low will reduce the amount of clutter on the ground, meaning you can see someone lying on the ground, where they might not be able to see you because of grass or other ground-clutter (if they have terrain on high).
I have a decent spec on my rig, so I have most of these on med-high, but I'm going to play with some of them at low, to see if it makes a difference. Just wondering if any of you play with these to give you an advantage in game?
I've lost count of the number of times I've hit the deck to take cover in some foliage, and *still* been taken out by someone who I didn't think would be able to see me - maybe someone with "terrain" turned to low???
7Shades.

Re: Tweaking as an advantage...?
Indeed. I used to scratch my head when I was lying in a shadow thinking, how the heck could he see me? Then I discovered the same thing.
I'm sure if I was ultra-competitive, I would have all those settings turned to low so I could see through the shadows. But I think the game looks much better with all those things turned on, plus it adds greatly to the sense of realism.
Another game (mod really) this is really bad is Project Reality mod. Some of the tall grasses in fields and such don't draw at certain distances, so while you may think your squad has good concealment, that sniper 200m away can see you without any obstructions."No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country.
He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country."

Yeah, this came up before: http://www.tacticalgamer.com/battlef...ght#post368823
It's pretty rediculous.. I was talking w/ Daarken, one of the PoE2 testers, and this REALLY bugs the developers. They spend so much time developing the textures and hand "painting" a lot of the lighting - but then so many people turn everything down because they're uber competitive.

Re: Tweaking as an advantage...?
What the game engine should do is make the person invisible even if the viewer has the shadows are turned off. That would fix the problem.

Re: Tweaking as an advantage...?
Ya, the grass thing really kills me, but I don't think it is dependent on settings. I hate when I look down into a big farmer's field and I see 3 guys crawling on their bellies toward the flag. I know I'm not supposed to see them, and I feel dirty when I kill them (for a second, at least).

Re: Tweaking as an advantage...?
I have to turn my settings on low because my processor is outdated. Bane's suggestion is the best though to make up for it.
EDIT: Tweaking. Haha.Last edited by Santa; 03-19-2007 at 07:37 PM.

Re: Tweaking as an advantage...?
I got that, but it doesnt make up for the AMD 3000+. I have no idea why they stuck the + on the end.

Which explains why you see everyone, everywhere.. Does not exlpain why you run around like a ... what did J call you? ... A squirrel on crack? lol
I too have run my game at the lowest of settings for league/ ladder gameplay. Although it does take so getting used to. Muzzleflash FTW.
I do run on medium settings normally.[TG-19th]theeANGELofDEATH(Steam/Origin)

Re: Tweaking as an advantage...?
Because, even at it's *true* processor speed (somewhere around the 2.3GHz mark if memory serves - check your hardware manual for real figures), an AMD 3000+ runs significantly better (hence the +) than a *true* 3GHz Pentium.I got that, but it doesnt make up for the AMD 3000+. I have no idea why they stuck the + on the end.
I seem to recall reading that was the reasoning behind the +...

Perhaps it's just because I recently read the drug thread in the sandbox, but i was expecting this to be about amphetamine usage and its effect on gameplay....

Re: Tweaking as an advantage...?
I played better a year ago when I had my crappy AthlonXP 2500+ / Radeon 9800 pro on low settings (even w/ lower than 20 fps) than I do now with a Core 2 Duo E6400 / Geforce 7900GS on high settings.
In my experience, low settings really do give you an advantage -- reaction times are often quicker because your mind doesn't have to sort through the additional terrain and features rendered on high graphics settings.
