Future of gamers with lower connections
I know that some people in this place have connections that almost reach a gigabit in speed but what about those who have a DSL with 20 KB. You can play CSS with it but thats about it. I have a custom gaming rig with 2.3 ghz processor and 7800 Nvidea graphics card and i still can't play Bf2 with more than 20 players if vehicles are on. When the next generation of games come out what will happen to those of us who aren't rich to afford extremely high speed connections.

Couple things, if your DSL is only running at 20kb you may want to look into that. Second how much ram is your machine running?
that sounds like a good idea trooper.

Re: Future of gamers with lower connections
20kB is not DSL, that's plain old dial-up service speed. And if you are using a dial-up modem, heaven help you because that won't cut it for gaming (well maybe Warcraft or turn-based). And as for people reaching gigabyte speeds, unless you play from a workplace, those speeds are not available to the general public. Even Japan and South Korea, who are the world's residential broadband leaders, are in the 25 MB area. Americans are lucky to get a fifth of that.
As for the future of online gaming, well it's already here and broadband is the name of the game. More powerful video cards and more processor speed, as well as multi-core, are what's in store for future video games.-33rd- BaneII

I am in Korea with DSL(1-2m give or take) and I do just fine with PRM. I also do alright with CS:S. Sometimes CS:S pisses me off for the simple fact that I will lag out at the wrong time. I also have 2gig of RAM, so I dont know if that helps or not. My ping in PRM is about 230, and in CSS it is about 200.

I would say there is no future!

Re: Future of gamers with lower connections
Well, isn't 20 kilobytes a 128kilobit connection, which is in fact DSL? 20KB/s is a lot faster than my dialup ever went ;D

Re: Future of gamers with lower connections
20kB is 160kb, and the minimum requirement for BF2 is 128kb, so you should be ok. In the future though I can see that going up as more data is shunted back and forth between the server and client.

You guys. a gigabit is allowed to the public which is 1000 megabits and Ive seen them before and they are expensive to buy and keep in service. Im trying to say that people who don't have enough money to afford the best of everything will be left in the dust of the next generation. i have over a gig of high speed Corsair

Re: Future of gamers with lower connections
Do you remember who was actually offering gigabit connections to the net? I have never seen ANYTHING on the consumer level that offers that kind of throughput. GIG-E peering with any backbone provider costs OBSCENE amounts of money (compared to residential rates) so I would be very surprised if someone was actually offering 1GB of throughput.
On another note, a gigabit connection is actually 1024Mb/sec, not 1000Mb/sec. Not a big difference, but it's a lot to most of us who would love to have that extra 24Mb/sec!

Re: Future of gamers with lower connections
Regular dialup is 56k if your lucky to get that speed, highest I ever got was 50k, had a transfer rate of 5kb/s+ sometimes, but I don't know what dialup would get that speed, I guess dual isdn? single isdn should get like 10kb/s.
I'm on 5mb/512kb service, and I already feel like thats slow, I want fios...rockin' 15mb would be pretty nice.|TG-12th|Undead

Re: Future of gamers with lower connections
20k, ouch.
Upgrading shouldn't be that expensive should it?
I'm on 8 meg down 1 up for 20 a month.
