Welcome to the Kapn's Kwestion n' Komplaint Korner! Today we have a little gem of a question that should bring enlightenment to the whole lot of you unwashed philistine cutthroats...who knows, some of you may even start bathing regularly, but I shan't hold my breath (unless you're walking by that is)!
Let's keep the "oh yeah! There was this time, at Band Camp, when..." and "in my opinion this 4$$h^t is a total nub" posts to a minimum, shall we? Wild speculations and opinion will just distract from several important issues that this kwestion raises. Discussion is welcome, and input encouraged! Before I go on, I just need to say PLEASE PEOPLE, for the love of all that is grammatical--the word "than" is not interchangeable with the word "then"! Observe the words' correct usage in the following sentences: Then, without warning, a wave even larger than the first broke over the bow. Rather than fight the sudden rush of water, I let it sweep me into the rigging--then held on for dear life! OK, just needed to set that straight. Now back to our regularly-scheduled Kapn's Komments: Quote:
Thanks for contacting me about this. I particularly like the quote from Groo at the end--what panache! You did the right thing by bringing this to the attention of an Officer. A couple of things I' going to address here: First, my opinion isn't important, but what is, is knowing the server rules. I can always tell you what I think, but that's not going to help as much. Second, ALWAYS consider the source. Who was this person? What gave him the authority to tell you what you can and can't do? Do you know who he is and can you name him/her? Third, to prevent things like this from happening again, you need to take measures to ensure that you have all the resources available at your disposal. I'll talk about what they are and how to use them. As to the first point, to my knowledge there is no server rule stating that one must make an air squad in order to fly. It is considered a good practice and a guideline, but it isn't a rule. Not only that, but it is my understanding that to tell someone they cannot fly because they are not in the right squad is completely against server rules. It is considered a courtesy to the squad to allow them to use the air vehicles if that is their main function. Who is a better pilot has no bearing on this as far as server rules are concerned. However, as an Irregular, you are expected to show good sportsmanship regardless of what some ass-hat may be saying or doing. That being said, there is the consideration of the team, and what best serves the team overall may often be different than what you may prefer personally. There is a line to walk here between utter selflessness and utter selfishness, of course--we don't expect the former, and we certainly hope we don't see the latter. We want you to have fun too, which is the whole point. A balance may need to be struck in a case like this, where you either try to take turns, or you start an Apache squad and invite this other person into it and then lock it, and work together, or you waste time and manpower waiting for the downed chopper to spawn and argue. All of those options are fine, as far as rules go. The next main point is, consider your source. Is this a TG member? Who is it? Is there an admin on who can tell you right off the bat whether this guy is for real? Who's leading his squad? Is he aware his squad-member is acting this way? Regardless of your attitude or actions, this other person was not acting the way a person from TG should act. If this person isn't a TG member, you need to politely inform them that they are welcome to visit the forums and read the server rules, and make an incident report or complaint in the forums if they wish. This is more trouble than the average player wants to make. If however, it is a TG member, particular an In-House Squad member who's been around awhile, you are the one who needs to back down, go check the server rules on the forum, and then let them know if they are wrong about it being a rule. You are a lowly Irregular recruit. It takes time to build up some cred around here, and it's worth the effort when you do--plenty of people will recognize-- but ya gots ta reprezent, know wt'm sayin'? OK, thirdly, protect yourself. Know your server rules. If you're wearing the badge, you best know the server rules. We all have to refresh our memory once in a while. Download Teamspeak and use it every time you play. This allows you to speak with other TG members, find an admin, or even hop into other server's channels to ask a question or ask for help from a senior TG member. One big benefit that the |TG-Irr| tag gives you are a lot of 'big brothers' willing to help, guide, and defend you if someone is bullying you. Use those resources by using Teamspeak. Keep a notepad and pencil handy to jot down names of bunnyhoppers, TKers, great teamplayers and good squadmates/ squadleaders. Whether you need to get an admin to warn someone, or nominate a player for a ribbon, you have to know their name at the very least! Write down the server, the time, the map, the squad name and squadleader. Admins (and any of us, even you) can download the Battlerecorder for that map and review it, and know exactly what you said, what they said--so be careful of what you say, and don't make baseless accusations, ever. If you threaten someone with being kicked or banned, you can be the one who ends up getting punished. Your job is to report, let the admins do the rest. Know who your admins are--if you need to go to another channel to ask an admin from 2142 to hop over to PR to take care of a problem, no worries! If they have the time and access to the server, they'll help. It's that simple. I can't change what already happened, and neither can you--my advice is, shrug it off,let it go and protect yourself with the suggestions above, and you'll have a much better experience. Whatever you do, don't go back to Vanilla! ![]()
