Re: Practice Update for 1/24/06

I think that all the documentation, the public conversations surroundign the formation and the very name of the organization itself speak to the very thing JB Ranger is saying: Irregular. You're going to get spotty attendance because that is what Irregular means. *shrug* In fact, if you read the segment of the mision statement that refers to what our 'core membership' will be even that makes clear that people who can't make regular time commitments will be one of the core groups the Irregualrs are made up of.

Shirk, if you are honestly interested in why people joined the Irregualrs, I think a separate thread is in order.

For the record-- I'm not offended by this thread or its contents.

Well t hats good to hear at least. Judging by the speed that my inbox is filling up this has come across in the wrong way. If you are reading this or responding to this chances are it was not aimed at you. The pm went out to everybody because it is a community issue. I felt that unless we started getting more participation the squad will suffer, maybe im wrong and having a quarter of our membership who have never been heard from again is ok.

I dont know how much more clearly i can make my point though.

The only way this works is if people get involved. Even if this is only one post in the forum a week or fortnight saying you are busy. Is that really too much to ask?

We understand that there will be spotty attendance. The point of the irregulars is that our larger membership will mean that we will still be able to put out a good showing despite that because we have a large number of people. If we have a large number of people but only a handful that actually try to attend then we get the problem of two people being the entire compliment for a scrim or practice. 25% attendance from 10 people makes this unworkable. 25% attendance from 60 makes it a success. That is the point i am trying to make.

I am sorry that this has not been understood.

Re: Practice Update for 1/24/06

Personally, I didn't join the Irregs to play in the leagues. I just wanted a regular group of players to play with, more than just random people on server 1. So far I have enjoyed playing with the Irregs who I've had the chance to play with several times (FbMantis, Drizzid, Shirk, and others). If the leagues are going to be the main part of the Irregs then I may have joined the wrong group.

Anyways........ my chance of attendance is based intirely on the amount of homework assigned tommorow. If I get lucky and get little/no homework (knowing my teahcers, I won't... but I can still hope) then I'll be there. Otherwise I'll be hunched over a textbook at my desk, wishing I was.

People you have to understand this isnt just about the leagues. It is about being active. Millipede, you are an active and valued member. I think you have misinterpreted what has been said and it would be a shame to lose your contribution. Im going to go away and think how i can express myself more clearly as this seems to be being taken on board by precisely the people it wasnt aimed at.

Re: Practice Update for 1/24/06

Maybe what is missing here is something very specific. What is meant by 'an active and valued member' in the Irregulars? What does one do to be considered 'active' and 'valuable'? How do I make sure that I'm being appropriately active?

Re: Practice Update for 1/24/06

A single post in the forum is a good start, those are the people this is aimed at. If you are the sort of person asking that question then i think it is fair to say you are appropriately active.

I'd say you are being active by simply engaging in this discussion.

Re: Practice Update for 1/24/06

Exactly smallfatcat. It does not have to be a single area. League play and practice were cited as examples of a trend which seemed to me to be developing. I have a feeling you may disagree. Think of it as a mixed bag you can pick and choose from at will. I would say forum participation is a minimum. It is a vital way to disseminate information and form a community. I do not think it is too much to ask to drop in from time to time. If somebody is not interested in a particular event it would be nice to say so. A complete lack of replies makes us think there is no interest or complete apathy.

If you are just interested in playing with a regular bunch of team mates on server1 thats fine. It helps if people then start Irr squads or seek them out to play with other irreg chaps. The same can be applied to all other aspects. Its common sense and a willingness that is important.

If people cannot or will not participate in the forum, the scrims, the practice or fighting with regular team mates AT ALL there is little point them being in the irregs.

Re: Practice Update for 1/24/06

Any way we can get an e-mail list of sorts?

A schedule that is easily read somewhere?

Something other than random threads on a message board, not all of which appear pegged? And even those that ARE pegged, are fighting with a dozen others..

Basically, I think we'd get a lot better participation in "events" if there was a clear concise place to view the scheduled "things", as well as an annoucement list/method of sorts (such as the pm feature here, but that may be rather a drag on the event organizer to use).

I missed the practice simply because I didn't see the thread in time, even though I was reading the board. I'll try to make Tuesday, but it's semi-early to try to rush home from work super fast for, and I'm in Central time(!)

I wasn't at the last "event" (the scrim) since it simply wasn't interesting to me - I enjoy BF Vanilla, but learning an entire new mod for a single event (where most of us havn't used it before), seems somewhat counter-intuitive at this early in our "life".

Just my two cents.

Re: Practice Update for 1/24/06

Oh..

And just so you don't think I'm complaining (I'm not, I fully appreciate the time and effort being put in by the select few - I know it's tough, as I've been there myself in other groups)

If we ever need anything technical/hosting/etc. such as an e-mail list or whatnot, simply let me know and I'll take care of it. I wouldn't mind becoming more active "behind the scenes" on things that don't require me to be at place X at time Y - as that is my current challenge for group participation.

peace,

-Phil

Re: Practice Update for 1/24/06

Heh. I think Phil's on to something. I have much more access to email than the forums, since some of the offices I work out of have blocked TG as a non business site (which makes me wonder which one of you out there is the admin at the site that doesn't have TG blocked... )

Irregularity will be our only constant, and having a big pool of members is the only way we'll likely field teams. I'll defer to the why thread for the details.

Friday nights are out for me -- can't ever make a commitment that night, and if I can play it will be late. This will probably limit my participation in the scrims etc., since that seems to be the night most of these things are organized.

Tomorrow, however, I'm in.

Re: Practice Update for 1/24/06

Hey guys,

I have typed out multiple responses to this tread. I started with the P.O'D then went to the frustrated reply but I think this is the better one to go with so if you will bear with me for a minute or two I would appreciate it.

First off I thought the Irregulars was the best place for me to be. I have a family with a 4yr old and a 7 wk old and I work 10-12 hrs a day so my play time is measured by how much sleep I want to sacrifice. Jimmytwohand and sgtDFuller had started posting about the Irregulars and it seemed like the place for me so I signed up. Then I started seeing some areas that i could help so I stepped up and tried to do what I could. I have since realized that I spend more time doing Irregular stuff than I do playing BF2. In this realization i kinda got frustrated when I tried to organize a practice for the Irregulars and the TG inhouse scrim. There were a few who showed up and gave great input but it was to say the least unorganized. So that's what kinda started this whole thing so I will only say:

"I'm sorry"

I think I got to excited when things got rolling along and started maybe trying to move the Irregulars in a direction that I wanted them to go. So maybe I was looking for more than what the Irregulars can offer. After all with all the time I have been putting towards the admin stuff of the Irregulars I might actually have time for a inhouse squad I don't know. So I will have to rethink my situation and maybe consider going in a different direction.

To finish off there are some good people truly trying to do the best job they can. Try and show them some appreciation by doing something even the least little bit. We all have real life to deal with but a little does really go a long way. Thanks for your time

Re: Practice Update for 1/24/06

I agree with pretty much everything that Phil said.

I too didn't realise that there was a practice night organised as I probably hadn't visited the board about the time that it was held but probably was on serv #1 while it was on.

Likewise for the scrims, It looks like an amazing amount of work has gone into it but for the life of me I can't figure out when I'm needed. I can see when we're supposed to be playing but don't know if I'm on the list, do I need to reply to a thread somewhere or just turn up in teamspeak ?

True, if I really had wanted to know I guess I all I had to do was ask but due to the lack of a thread such as this, I thought that everything was going well and the help of 'new' players suvh as me wasn't needed.
