I don't think that snipers should be in one squad based on that 98% of commanders/other SL's will know how to utilize this to its fullest. I would much rather be a member of a squad watching flanks and sitting back 20yards behind them in a stationary spot.

The problem you run into in BF2 is the ability to respawn. You get killed by a sniper, you remember where you were and what direction you either heard the shot from or which way the hit indicator showed. Secondly, there is no mistaking the sound of a sniper rifle. A squad patrolling near an operating sniper team will can easily pinpoint where the team is setup and quickly neutralize them. Lastly, the more everyone plays a map the more sniper locations are known. There are only so many buildings and accessible rooftops to fire from.

If operating as a sniper team on a map like Al Basrah I would look to have a team of either 4 or 5. The sniper and squadleader would be spotting enemies while the other 2-3 would be assigned to defend the immediate area from ambush as well as provide ammo and health. This team would not only be able to hold their own but be able to assault a position if needed. Their role would be aimed to disrupting enemy movement rather than assaulting/defending a given position.

Defending a sniper position might not seem like the most fun job but once a sniper is spotted/known to be operating in area he becomes a very popular man.

there are ways around being detected. Primarily is relocation, the spec ops spotter is essential in your relocation process as he is fire support, he has the ability to engage at medium and close range. Second, is knowing when to fire and what to fire at. I can tell you that on Al Basrah especailly, if you wait for the chopper or the A-10 to fly over head before you fire, will allow you to operate from one are for an extended periuod of time. Third is be careful what you fire at, snipers need to take out targets that are going to hinder a squads ability to stay mobile; squad leaders, medics etc.
