Two words - exceptional service.
Do your part, attend meets when you can, help newbies, and generally participate in the community and try to help out around here, and you can earn a prettier badge. Last I checked there were three levels of them, with the highest level badge being the one Axis has.

Grey: The Original Badge Red: Distinguished Irregulars' Badge--not real hard to earn Red w/ silver swords: Platoon Seargent in the Officer's Corps Incandescent with Gold swords: Irregular Officer Cobalt: IRR4L (>1 year service) Gold chaplet: Recognition of outstanding service--automatic for an Officer, but can be earned by anyone. So for example, if I were to leave the O-corps tomorrow, I would be wearing the Cobalt badge with white skull and swords and a gold chaplet. See the New Badges sticky or the wiki for details about how to earn these badges.
