Re: Tactics : Survive Public/Ranked Servers With Sanity Intact

Do your C4 charges and other such explosives disappear over time or when you die or not at all?

Thanks

Excellent write-up. If you choose to add strategies for the other classes, I'm sure no one would object

Re: Tactics : Survive Public/Ranked Servers With Sanity Intact

I have to share this...

Okay, so I get onto a ranked server and they're playing Karkand. After about 5 minutes I realize that only squad on my team has a squad leader who is AFK, wonderful. It's a 32 player server, there is only one squad on the entire team, and that squad leader has been afk for the last 3 maps. We tried booting him but no dice. The upside is we have a Commander who isn't shelling his own troops so he might be a good Commander but we can't tell because no one is in a functioning squad. Despite a few problems the team is holding it's own so we can assume that the MEC aren't much better off.

I'm not going to be a squad leader. There's only 4 other people even willing to join a squad it's just not worth the frustration. There's only one reasonable course of action. I inform my squad that I am a Ninja.

Playing Ninja style saved an otherwise painful game of zerg-festing and I might add that it did so with positive results. The game ended and I was awarded the silver star, highest combat rating, top special forces, basic knife combat, basic explosive ordinance, basic pistol combat and veteran pistol combat. In conclusion (under the right circumstances) it does actually work. It was a fun way to mess around when my team wasn't working, it's something that you've just got to try.

The weapons of a Ninja are silence, speed, and an absolute lack of communication on the enemy team. These must be used to their greatest advantage. The path of the Ninja is one with the Special Forces kit. A Ninja will use his knife, silenced pistol, and C4 (not exactly quiet but you don't hear it comming so it's still good).

The disadvantage of Ninja is that with only a pistol he's not going to be able to defend himself very well. But a good Ninja never dies the first time you kill him because he has a Honorary Ninja Medic to sneak out and revive him when nobody is looking. For the record Medics can't be real Ninjas because they're stupid (more on that later). Medics don't care though, you're going to give them a lot of revive points.

Basicaly the idea is to hide and ambush people with the knife or pick them off with the pistol but the real fun is the C4. There are basicaly 3 things you can do:

1) Lay a Trap - At the second flag from the US side, the one in the garden like area and tree, I put some obvious C4 on a wall. So the MEC that were trying to capture it huddled together on the other side of the flag underneath the tree which is where the rest of the C4 was.

2) Pizza Delivery - Try to get C4 onto the side of a passing vehicle. When it reaches the friendly infantry detonate it. Even if you didn't get enough on to kill the vehicle you're going to surprise some infantry. Nobody has any idea where it came from and it beats trying to sneak into the middle of them.

3)Abuse the Medics - This is by far the funniest way to use C4 and why Medics are stupid. So I'd sit on a roof near the main body of enemy infantry and wait until someone stopped below me. Then I'd pick them off with the pistol and drop some C4 onto the body. I'd say you have to hide the C4 for this to work but that would be a lie. It's like a bug zapper. Once the C4 is down you just crawl back and wait for the "you're gonna be okay." Then you just blow them up. Now you'd think the C4 would make your victims really dead but if it does that doesn't stop the medics from trying so drop another satchel and repeat. My record is three Medics at once, I guess they thought all the bodies were free points.

Re: Tactics : Survive Public/Ranked Servers With Sanity Intact

I have had some fun on the public servers. Sometimes I get into a good squad. It happens.

Otherwise, as noted above, just get into the "army of one" mentality. Spec Ops is particularly good for this as it has a very versatile rifle and some anti-tank capability in the form of C4.

Speaking of C4, another fun trick if you're feeling a bit suicidal, is to stick a bunch of it onto the back of a speedy vehicle. Keeping the detonator in hand, enter the vehicle and drive it straight into a large group of enemy forces. Hop out when you get close and the vehicle will continue without you for a few seconds on its momentum. Detonate and watch the fireworks. With practice you can even survive some of the time.

Lol, I'll have to give that ninja thing a go sometime. My advice though is to perservere. If you stick with the same servers, you eventually build up a collection of known good squad members, and can invite them to a squad whenever you see them.

My other peace of advice that has got me through many public games is to force teamwork upon someone. Don't start a squad, join one, and follow your squad leader around as if you're co-joined twins. Eventually they tend to get the message.

Yesterday I even had the best squad experience I've ever had on a public server with two unknowns. I was support, they were assault and spec ops, and we managed to instictively apply proper tactics of suppresison and flank. We even managed to use bounding overwatch to get across the karkand river without taking a casualty. And all this without using our mics!

Re: Tactics : Survive Public/Ranked Servers With Sanity Intact

Playing on ranked servers isn't bad ALL of the time. I, too, want to unlock guns for the kits... I just don't think it makes sense not to try and get everything possible from a game I bought and play for fun (YMMV).

If I join a ranked server, i'll tend to do what the original poster said (great post, btw). Either bounce around from squad to squad until I find one that has at least a few people playing with teamwork, or start my own squad. Even if no one joins, i'll at least be able to hear the commander, if we've got a semi-decent one. I've also done the conjoined twins thing mentioned later in this thread... even had one squad leader comment, "this is the first time i've ever had squaddies stay so close to me."

I agree with OP's assessment that most people on ranked servers are looking for teamwork, but many don't know how to make it happen. Voice com is the key, but a lot of people don't have mics, or seem to be wary of talking to random people online. Best squad i've ever been in was probably on a ranked server, where EVERYONE not only had a mic, but was using it, calling out the locations of enemies, squad leader directing infantry traffic (XXX head over to that building and cover the NE while we move to that other building), and just having a good time with general com chatter.

One nice option, if you can, is to find yourself a like minded support guy when you are specops. The combination is pretty fierce. The engineer doesn't have as obvious a teammate pairing, I think, though somebody with a bit of range would be nice to drag alone.

[oh, and I hate the TG larger server lag, not to mention the fact that I'm not upgrading to 1.01 until it is fixed... so that leaves me out on the public servers]

Re: Tactics : Survive Public/Ranked Servers With Sanity Intact

Recently a new tactic is being used on the pubs that is absolutely driving me insane.
I have now been officially kicked from three servers because of this, and it's making me seriously consider on giving up on my second unlock.

The passive suicide.

When I'm in a plane, some #$%&'er will run up and start to hump the front landing wheel. He will stay there until we die from a passing jet/chopper/arty attack, or I take off. Then he will punish the TK.

When I'm in a tank, some #$%&'er will run up and start to hump the front tread. He will stay there until we die from a passing jet/chopper/arty attack, or I drive over him. Then he will punish the TK.

I have even taken the "high" road and dismounted and walked away...
Only to have this person:
A) try to tk me
B) promptly crash/explode due to self immolation with C4 (WTF?)
c) Swiftly be defeated in battle (with rivers and trees) and do it all again.

Can someone please provide a little insight as to this behavior?
It's time to give up on the next unlock, huh?

Sound more like a passive AGRESSIVE suicide to me.

Great post. I think there is little question that the SF class is the best for plain running around...it is at least somewhat effective in most situations. The support classes are not worth as much if you don't have anyone to, well, support. Lone wolfing really works if (surprise, surprise) the other team lacks coordination. Once in a blue moon, I find myself on the other side of a moderately organized group, and then I find out how dependent on chaos the lone wolf really is.

In my experience so far, I find that more often than not people are looking for a little leadership. Working with a good squad is so rewarding (as we all have found) that once people find out what it is like they start to look for it. Unless someone is completely goofing off, and we all have seen plenty of that.

The biggest suprise I had recently is when I jumped on a pub server (Karkand map...love that one) and, to my utter shock, found that most of the people on my side were in a squad. I jumped into the commander's seat. Even though I was a stranger to the people there, they followed orders about 70% of the time. It was certainly enough to wipe the street with the other team.
