    Camp Gib: Jan 4th 2008, 01:00am

So it's 1 O'clock in the morning and most of the TG crowd have left the server except myself and a fellow 8th when Camp G rolls in on the rotation.

I take the Squad Leader position as Rali3gh, UneasyRay, AllRoy, Pickled and ElrickOfTheAbyss enlist to support me in the rush to take the high ground.

The round started as hard as they come: my first attempt at an FAV rush over the top East was thwarted by a vigilant Engineer with a Pilum. Undeterred I then sent my men to the northern rooftops overlooking Harbor and after a tense firefight with the locals we won the building that assisted in a flag-cap for the team. However a lucky string of rocket-grenades sent us packing to a countdown with the rest of my squad too far away for timely revives. It was at that point that I noticed an FAV had become available at our UCB and I ordered my men to stand-down and await the word.

A second rush was risky since the enemy would have had time to dig in at Toll Station but risks are part of this map when considering the formidable choke-points. I jumped into the driver's seat and shot out of the UCB and made for the same approach as before confident that with the flag-cap at Harbor the northern approach would be clear of engineers with itchy trigger fingers.

Luck was on our side as I rocketed up the dirt slope unopposed but elation quickly turned to panic as the enemy walker strode from the Western road out of Toll Station. With only one avenue of approach left to me I steered the now fully loaded FAV down the Eastern road to be confronted by a ridiculous collection of twelve motion mines - and they were smiling at me!!!.

I flew through the metal globes and dismounted as the FAV struck the Dragon's Teeth at the South end of Toll Station if only to diffuse the hovering balls of death. I shot through the crack in the wall on foot and as I rounded the corner I called upon the rest of my squad to spawn in as we were out of sight. We made directly for the "Widow's Corridor" to the North East of Central Camp.

Not knowing if the enemy had detected our break-through I asked for a brave volunteer to split away from the squad and plant themselves at the Ruins flag to cause a distraction as the rest of us ran on for the EU base. Rali3gH answered the call and set upon lowering the flag as we flew past on our way to the primary objective.

The men ran in and secured safe positions at EU base as I stayed on the second floor as a spawn point if things turned nasty. Luck was once more on our side as not only had the enemy not detected our presence but both flags neutralized and turned at the same time due to the head-start Rali3gH had on Ruins on his own.

I pulled the men over to behind the secondary choke point between Ruins and Central Camp after the flag caps just in time as the enemy started to roll in with guns blazing. I sent the order to defend the choke and the lads dispersed to take strong points along the contested front line. Elrick and Roy positioned themselves at the entrance to widow's corridor as the rest of us guarded the killing ground from the walkway above. Every single one of my squad members handled themselves expertly as enemy kills and friendly revives were dished out fluently as though they had been rehearsed days in advance. We held the back line as the rest of our team threw themselves at the enemy from two fronts crushing them into just the Central Camp flag.

Alas our efforts were ultimately unrewarded as the rest of our team's uncoordinated attacks cost us dearly in tickets and although they were reduced to just one flag they won 32-0.

Regardless of the outcome my hat is off to all of the men I served with that round and I thank you for reminding me why this game is worth playing and so damn enjoyable.

    INSUN.

Sounds like a nice rush. Well done. Silly engys forgot emp mines, probably better than MM for defending Toll.

Insun, you were one hell of a squad leader that round. I was sad to hear you say that that was your last round for the night because if you had stayed I would have played longer (and gotten less sleep for work today). You did a SUPERB job (as always) of keeping the guys from straying. Some people's play styles lend them to stray ahead of the squad more than others and if unchecked this can cause them to go down in a position where a revive is difficult or even impossible thus costing the team tickets. While my style is more "remaining the SL's shadow" these Rambo types have a place and if utilized properly can be a great asset to a squad. Insun, you did a great job of knowing when to give those guys space to "graze" on the lemmings in front of us, and when to pull them back to dig in against a coordinated squad making a good push. The true test of a great Squad Leader is his ability to manage the tools at his disposal to create the best opportunity for his squad to succeed. You did this with flying colors and even though we lost, the round felt like a great accomplishment from my point of view. Unfortunately you can't SL the whole team and most of them just jumped into the grinder like mindless zombies no matter how loud the Commander yelled.

+rep for you Sir!!! And great write up as well.

By Rali3gH's post above, this was a case of shining TG teamwork amongst a bunch of pubbie newbs. Well led, well played.
