[AAR] Camp Gibraltar - 30 July, 2008, 1 Ticket left

It started like most other rounds of Camp Gibraltar do, we (PAC) attempt to take a flag, they (EU) attempt to stop us - the only real difference being we only had 200 tickets this time instead of 300. Our first few pushes on Harbor were pretty much futile, to say the least. We couldn't make it up the ramp with out eating a rocket or well placed 'nade. On one of the attempts, we actually made it to the Harbor flag and I ordered my squad to the flag as I ran around getting revives. After my forth or fifth revive, my paddles stopped working - overheated I guess. So I sat near the flag and provided cover as my squad and a few other friendlies worked on flipping it.

We got our flag and we defended it and for what felt like five minutes I either ate 'nades, rockets, or bullets and each time I went down I was revived immediately. The fragging was so bad that I never got the chance to move or reload, I was in a bad position. Eventually I respawned and we worked our way to Toll Station pushing back the EU forces as we went. We come within visual distance of the gates and something strange happened, the EU team disappeared. What? Were did they go? I voice my confusion and someone says "They've lost a back flag!". I think "Great!, let's get Toll while they're distracted" and that's exactly what we did.

After capping the flag, my squad cleared the East while another squad cleared the West. Then orders came in from our CO - "Move on Central Camp". We still had hostile activity at Toll, so we stayed back a little while longer cleaning up. Then the orders came in again "Move on Central Camp!", and we did. I wanted to hit it from the Northern entrance, so we ran up the Easter corridor, ground level and worked our way around. As we passed the first intersection a 'nade landed at our feet. "!@#$, this is going to hurt" someone said, and miraculously, it didn't. Somehow we all survived with the most minor of cuts and bruises. We get all the way around to the Northern side of Central Camp and we have yet to meet any resistance so rather than pause and regroup, we charge right in and up the stairs. Lucky for us another squad had just rushed from a different direction and softened up our targets and depleted their ammo and we were able to get up the stairs, clean off the platform and take the flag. Somewhere in the fight I went down but was revived, loosing my assault kit in the process replaced by a support kit. I now had a Clarke, one of my least favorite weapons. I manage a few kills with it and take a breather as the flags starts to rise.

As the flag is going up, new orders come in, "Take ruins, Take Ruins". Damn, no rest for the weary. We have a decent ticket lead, we're good on supplies and the CO seems to have his head on straight so, I issue the order "Let's move on ruins from the top" and we head across the catwalks. My goal was to get on the ledge above the flag, rain down a bit of death on the defenders and then cap it. Well, I forgot I didn't have my assault kit with me and the support had heavy armor on. I'm moving slow and we manage to get part way across the catwalk when we start to take fire. I pull out my health pack only to hear "click, click, click" as a resupply crate appears in my hands. Oh crap. Better keep moving and hope for the best. I got the worst. I was on point, low on health, out of sprint (damn heavy armor) and I mistimed the jump across the gap and I landed right in the middle of a hostile squad, loosing more health int he fall. Wonderful. At that point I go into CYA mode and I pull out my Clarke before anyone spots me. I fire point blank into someone's back. I miss. Crap. I fire again. I miss again. Double crap. So I do what any person who sucks with the Clarke should do, I run away like a little girl. I die immediately. Oh well, back to Central Camp.

Our pushes on Ruins and EU Base failed and EU manages to get some infantry behind us and onto Toll Station. We spawn there, clean up the hostiles, and setup a defense because somehow EU has managed to reclaim Central Camp. Doh! And their walker is right around the corner laying waste to all who poke there head out. Doh Doh! So we defend. Again. EU must have taken the "Rocket spam 101" course because that's all their doing. Now our ticket lead quickly turns into a deficit and my strategy goes from "kill them" to "save us". Our teammates keep putting themselves in the worst positions and getting themselves killed, I'd say they were like lemmings but at this point they weren't that organized and I'd be insulting the lemmings. So our team tries to go kill for kill and yell to my squad "Everyone start reviving, we're not attacking anymore".

The ticket gap narrows and both teams are around 22 tickets apiece. Bam, a few hundred rockets explode in front of me killing a few guys. I pull out my paddle, push sprint, and get in a running revive. I make it to cover, turned and diid it again. I can only hope the rest of my squad was doing the same, by that time my hands were full and I only had eyes for the fallen.

The tickets slowly crept down and it PAC and EU were in a neck and neck race. We ran from body to body watching the tickets drop...
    12-11
    8-9
    6-7
    4-5
    1-3
    1-2
    1-1
    "REVIVE, REVIVE, REVIVE."

Boom, I'm dead. I start yelling "No, get me up, get me... "

    0-1.

We lost. Argh, so close! I still had time on my revive clock, so I know I was NOT the last ticket. I take solace in that. I am very pleased to know that my squad did more than their fair share to keep us in the game. Good job, I salute you.

Great round! Starting with only 200 tickets kept the round from going on forever and ever.

Nice write up Lorax, even when you lose those matches, they are usually the best.

I remember once on CareBear when I was SLing, (yeah i know, poor SM's). My squad was up defending Command Center and I told my squad to hang back because we had a 30+ ticket lead and I didn't want them throwing themselves into the meat grinder. I watch all of the other squads rushing down the hill and out lead dwindles from like 50-20 to 40-15 to 30-10 to 20-10 and I think we won with 5-8 tickets left. I was telling my squaddies that if we lose this match I'm going to hunt down everyone on our side and physically beat some smarts back into them....good times

We had a pretty healthy lead at one point, all we had to do was hold our ground and we were golden. But to tell the truth, those 0-1 or 1-0 rounds are the best, no matter how frustrating loosing a ticket lead was.

Great recount Lorax, that was a great game. It seemed once the ticket count got down between to 20-24 the game lasted another 20min. It was unreal, everyone fought hard and well to keep the game going on so long.

However eveyone on my squad could not understand how the ticket lead never went into our favor as we held most of the flags the entire round. I suppose, as it is in Risk, a good defense is better than a stong offense.

But it did make me wonder has something changed with the ticket count with 1.6?

    Cheers,
    Aumen

If EU holds even one flag on that map, they will not bleed. It doesn't matter if they only have Harbor, as long as they have one they're immune to the bleed. PAC, on the other hand, is not. Also, we started the round with 200 tickets instead of our regular 300, I'm not sure if that affected much more than duration of the round, but it's another variable to consider.

The only way to bleed EU on this map and others like it is pretty much to cap them out. If PAC controls all of the flags and the EU team is still alive, EU will bleed hard until they either reclaim a flag or PAC wipes them completely off the map.

    Nice AAR, love those rounds.

I gotta get on the server and see how this new rotation is going, haven't had any time this week. My original thought about the lower ticket count for Camp G was that if something doesn't happen for PAC fairly early on, its gonna be a stalemate and a chokefest for 100 more tickets.

THe new map rotation rocks --- A great relief from what it has been for so long.

Anospa - The lower ticket count seems to make the map a good deal more fun. Not sure if it is because it does not last as long and so if a toll block occurs, it does not suck the life out of your game time or it is just simply more hype because of it? But whatever the case it has been a blast.

Re: [AAR] Camp Gibraltar - 30 July, 2008, 1 Ticket left

This was indeed one of my favourite rounds played in a long while. The round started fairly normally - I had my squad stand near the middle ramp, and after about 10-15 seconds camp an ammo box and just start hurling nades down the ramp. Unfortunately, not paying attention to the eastern flank enabled a PAC squad to take the eastern roof, and mow the EU team down. PAC quickly got the flag, but rather than holing up and doing the typical toll station meat grinder (which I hate more than anything else...) I had my squad try to keep pushing forwards, and set up a position just behind the building south of the Harbor flag. We managed to take out quite a few of the PAC soldiers as they were headed towards Toll Station. Unfortunately, we weren't able to take out all of them, and having a squad of ours so far up apparently enabled a PAC squad to get behind us and capture Ruins.

I ordered my squad to fall back to Toll, but by then it was too late and Ruins had fallen. The PAC onslaught rushed over the top of us to Toll Station, and a hastily prepared defense at Central Camp also fell quickly. The second chokepoint became set up, and the engines of the meat grinder started to turn. EU was operating at a ticket deficit, and I was pretty sure PAC would win the grind, so I tried to move my squad forward.

I didn't want to go for Central, as any attack there seemed foolhardy, so I took my squad to Toll, and hid behind the Eastern building while my squad valiantly tried to capture the flag. Unfortunately, I didn't offer enough organization and stupidly had my squad members going onesie-twosie, and just in time to be picked up by Lorax's and one other squad rushing to the defense.

As our attack was fought off, I was a little dejected and about to resign myself to defeat, when a squad member (I'm not sure who it was, I believe it might have been Modka) suggested that with our attempt on Toll pulling off two of their squads from defense, we might be able to get Central. With this solid tactical thinking proposed to me, I take the squad to central, and he was right -- the flag was much less well defended, and we had just enough time to take the flag and set up a defense. And defend we did. Hunkering down inside the flag, I saw we were about 15-20 tickets down. I decided we could still win the game, and began stressing the importance of every single revive. I ordered the squad to stick close and within the confines of Central, and we did our damndest to get every single revive. As we slowly eked out a ticket lead of 4 or 5 tickets, the tables turned again, and tickets evened out. As they read 1-1, I could barely even look at the screen, until finally the last PAC soldier fell and victory was ours -- but at what cost? I dunno, but it was sure a blast and I remember punching the air and shouting "Yes!" at the end when I saw we had won.

Yeah, I was there... In fact I think I was the losing ticket. *grimaces* That'll teach me not to rush in blindly.
