my first ever round of SL 25th Feb

after server 1 crashed and came back with no VOIP we moved to server 2 which was running conquest.

Sproge was SLing I think (and doing a fine job) when he had to leave. Next thing I know, I'm in charge

I did tell my squad (of all TGers I think) that I had no plan (which I'm sure filled them with confidence), basically sent orders via the minimap that more or less matched what the guys were doing anyway and tried not to die too much.

We lost the round, unfortunately (I think we were 20 tickets up when Sproge left ).

My first night remembering to login in to the TG TS too "who's playing Zho?" "erm me - the new guy, 'cept I'm an old guy, who's new again" - I need to change my name to muppet .

Anyway, back to SMing next time I'm on (no doubt to everyone's relief)

I'm by no means a good SL but I do ok. I prefer smaller scale infantry type games when I SL and rarely do armor maps. Not every defeat is down to you.....remember that. SMs must also take responsibility and speak up if they think the squad needs to move or stay put. Other squads can also get too pushy when sitting tight is what's required. Give it more time, don't give up on SLing. Just tell people you're new and need their input.

    |TG| is a great place to learn and I'm sure you already know some of our exceptional SLs. Why not start a locked squad as soon as a map loads, invite a good SL or 2, hopefully 1 will join you, tell him you're learning, ask for help. Then invite more people or just unlock the squad. If a good TGer is in the squad it'll fill quick!!!

When you are quiet and unsure, the seasoned TG SL will give you pointers and help you direct the squad. Soon enough you will became more comfortable with leading. Remember that some squads are more capable at defending than attcking and vice versa. Try identify your squads strenght and do that.

My favourite time to SL is just after a crash with low numbers. Things sometimes happen slower and eventually as you feel more comfortable it seeds up more and things get hectic. But you eased into it and it won't be as mad as a fully filled player count right from the start.

Well you did not quit and that is commendable; i.e. all too often people will jump out of the SL seat in that circumstance.

Glad your back in the 2142 seat!

    Cheers,
    A

You'd be surprised. When you're leading a squad of intelligent SMs, there are times when that's all you end up doing anyways. I know there has been plenty of occasions when SLing where my squad becomes such an effective unit, that everyone just stops talking and we all just know what to do. Whenever I think that we need a new kit for the situation, I look at the squad list, and notice that someone had already switched. When any armor in the squad needs repairs, a SM's already on it before the pilot can say anything. Don't think that you can't lead just because you're not giving orders. You'll learn strategies for the maps over time. Stick with it and you'll be fine!

Way to go Zhoed, hanging in there and taking control! It can be very intimidating, but you overcame it and made the best. That's what matters. Keep it up and you'll get more comfortable in the hot seat.

Yeah, great job on stepping up and taking the reins. My first time SLing was just like that, when my SL d/c'd for some reason, and I ended up becoming squad leader, and I don't think I did a bad job of it. Two important things to remember: Always congratulate your squad, and NEVER EVER be afraid to ask for help at TG if you're confuddled on what to do next. More often than not, someone will be willing to provide a tip or two, and a suggestion where needed.

yep, I get that feeling - I even briefly considered starting another soldier, but the thought of going back to the start put me off that, so people will just have to cope

DONT STOP SLing! You don't need to have a huge plan to be an effective SL. I'm horrible at being an SL as well, but you will never learn and get better unless you step up and do it! I'll gladly be in one of your squads anyday. I won't have any advice or tips or anything, but I'll be a supportive SM and follow you through hell and back. Good Luck Zhoed.

I second inviting seasoned squad leaders and listening to their input. Most of the time, constructive criticism will only help you as a SL and as a player.

Yup. Try naming your squad "New SL" or something. I did that a couple of times and some kind folks, who also happened to be experienced SL's, joined up. Very helpful, these guys (Plus the fact that they were also very good SM makes it less stressful for newbie SL's)

that's a really good idea! at my first game as an SL i've got banned, beacause my squad was attacking the UCB on c-landing. i was overwhelmed with the situation that they didn't follow my commands and i was a kind of nervous so i made my own mistakes like disregard the chat-warning etc.

second time, it was better but it would be easier if there are some good SL's in your squad who you can ask anytime. it's like a little TGU-lesson at normal playtime.
