So, I am playing along last night, being everyone else's slow moving target, and low and behold, I get an order from the commander to assault. I did not see the message that scrolled by that I was now the squad leader. When I was waiting to spawn again, I looked to see who else I was being a terrible squad leader for, and saw that it was only me. I saw that other squads had some open slots. So I left my squad, only to not be able to join another squad when already in the game. This started a whole mess of me getting booted. Then, when I rejoined the game, I still could not join a squad.

Is this do to a map cache error, or something? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to TG, and glad you decided to stop lurking and participate. Questions are always welcome, and hopefully we'll be able to steer you in the correct direction.

IMHO, if you realize you're squad leader suddenly, the correct response is to suck up and squad lead. No one is going to blame you for being disoriented since this was just thrust upon you. If you've never led before, now is always a good time to start getting experience. We were all brand new once. Set a defend order, and take a few moments to gather yourself and figure out the situation. Talk to your squadmates, and let them know what's happening. Anyone who isn't understanding gets kicked to the curb.

If you really, really aren't up to squad leading, tell people, then leave. If you leave a squad, you can't join a squad while dead to prevent abuse of "squad bombing" where a SL makes it to some spot undetected and then the whole squad spawns on him/her. You should have waited until you were alive and then joined a squad.

I'm not sure why you couldn't join a squad after re-joining. 2142 is swiss cheesy with bugs, so it could be anything.

Thanks for the reply. I was the only one in my squad, so I figured I was better used as a member of another squad.

Is there a copy of the key commands anywhere online? My lab ate my 2142 book that came with the game. I guess I could check the disk for a PDF file...

If you spawn in once, you cannot join a squad when you are dead. So the solution would of been to spawn in and then join the squad. If you leave the server and come back, you'll still have to spawn in to join a squad since it remembers you in the server.

Also, don't listen to Gloop. If you are in a squad by yourself it is always better to join another squad. And Gloop, read a post before replying. You don't have to reply to every topic, especially if you don't have answers.

The best tutorial for me though is to go through and rebind everything in a way that makes sense, and just keep messing with it until it's natural.

There is a chance you may have been squad bugged as well. If you are in a squad and are unable to leave it then you must close 2142 and restart before you can join a new squad on TG. This will also cause the server to think you are not in a squad and kick you after so many minutes.

It sounds to me however that Zoopy has your situation absolutely correct since you were able to leave the original squad without problem.

Actually, after zoopy pointing out my mistake, I reread my post. This was some serious assumptions and lecturing on my part, and I apologize. I did not mean for it to sound that way, and he's right, I didn't actually answer your question like I thought I did. Chalk it up to some ADD and laziness today if you're feeling gracious.
