Re: The Walker, v1.0

I got to give it to anyone who even atempts to design a walker prototype on the drafting table. Just getting a concept to make it balanced it mindboggling. But then again, why make a walker? Combat suits is one thing and is something that can be realistic, but fully "Mechs" don't seem to be truly combat realistic to me. Yes walkers and mechs have showen us that they can transverse a very vaird terrain. But the drawbacks mount up. The legs itself is a enormus weakspot. If one is crippled, the entire leg would have to be replaced, not just a engine part or a tank tred. Also with the center of balance being so high, Any damage would pose a great threat to the driver. Any force big enough to knock over a walker would render it crippled and near unusable.

That makes war-suits, combat suits, and mechanized combat gear the more realistic. Mechanized gear would first be smaller then full sized mechs. The first advantage is cost. Then size. Finally agility. Cost is always importent. The cheaper it is, the more you can have. Imagine 1 compony of walker or 1/2 your army in mechanized gear. I rather have my troops geared up. The size would allow easy storage at nearly any base and allow for very easy tranport. Mechs would be tall and bulky, They wouldn't fit well with C-130s and would most likely require special transports to be constructed. Lastly agility, mechanized suits might not fit through your front door with having to level a wall, but they would fit in the allyway and between the trees of a dense forest. They also be able to lay down flat and be able to jump up at the soldier's will. The mechanized suit would jsut be a extension of the person driveing it allowed for a more tailered fit and possibly a real serious threat will minimum training required.

Re: The Walker, v1.0

*Cough* Crysis nano-suit *Cough*

On the flip side, the only real practice design I can think of would be something very wide with more than just two legs moving. Even then, I really can't see too much of an advantage of something being in a "walker/mech," form. One could argue that it could be useful in certain terrain types, but look at the world and see where combat may/is happen(ing).

In Star Wars' defense, with the AT-AT's design, they figured it fit in with the other vehicles and their "intimidating," factor.
