Re: Look what was in the NY Times today
I think that EA is trying to appeal to the casual gamer by leveraging the Battlefield brand to generate additional income online. I didn't get the sense from the NYT story that Battlefield: Heroes was a replacement for the more complex versions. Rather, it's a stand alone that simply uses the well known name to attract players. It's hard to know from a newspaper report what the truth of the matter actually is, though.
BTW - I think the whole thing is pretty weak.

Re: Look what was in the NY Times today
EA just lost the game.
A TF2 clone with BF elements and the financial strategy of Gunbound? This can only mean that pure free players will get a peashooter while others will spend up to 60$ for an assault rifle that can piece through 1600mm of titanium armor plating. I sure as hell hope they'll allow kit-stealing.

Re: Look what was in the NY Times today
Hmm can I buy an Afro for 3 dollars? Hope they got swimsuit edition!
I don't know about you guys, but on day one I'm going to have a level 64 Rifleman with two cool fire spells. Take that cartoony tank! On a serious note.... I think they are trying to make it kid friendly, think about it, a bunch of men out to kill each other with smiles, superhero chins, and water guns! Poop!

Re: Look what was in the NY Times today
Dabrit and Tempus pretty much said it all.
Definitely not what I was expecting/wanting or even thinking about.

Re: Look what was in the NY Times today
Can you imagine the bugs!! OMG EA can't provide support for games that we fork out 50 bucks for let alone a free game. Picture a glitch where you pull out your pistol and suddenly you are in belgrade with a shotgun pointed at your head. LMFAO EA!

"Hey, looks like our customer base is diversifying! Let's quickly abandon our long-time buyers and snatch up the new-comers with cartoony graphics and downloadable content! Nevermind the other guys -- they can just ... uh, who cares about them! It's all about the new guys! YEAH!"
Hey EA, why don't you go back to buying out people who actually make video games? You're pretty terrible at pretending to "get" the average gamer.

Re: Look what was in the NY Times today
And this is why I will be going to Frontlines when it is officially released. I'm going to give the beta a whirl tonight once I get the patch for it updated, but at this rate EA is going to lose a lot of the "die-hard" gamers, if they haven't already abandoned ship.

Re: Look what was in the NY Times today
BF:BC isn't very good at all. -.-
BF:H is just a TF2 ripoff. When your game becomes less popular than the mods people create for it, you've got a small development issue. I think they're trying to overcome that issue by just looking at what sells and stealing from that in order to make a brand name popular. Then again...its free. Free is always a decent price.

Re: Look what was in the NY Times today
it always makes me laugh when people call game companies "sell outs." Why would they NOT want to make money? If it's a crappy game, it hardly helps them. But they're ultimately after making money... just like you are at your day job. Trying to say that game companies have some duty to a greater good is ridiculous.
As for the game, I'll reserve judgment on it. If it retains the things I like best about the BF series -- namely the large number of players and the squad functions -- then I think there's a good chance it could be playable. Furthermore, I think it's silly for the same people who regularly complain about the lack of new content to games like 2142 to then turn around and slam the Play for perks model. There's every incentive for a company running a play for perks model to keep updating and improving a game just as there's VERY little incentive for a company that releases a solitary game. That's why there have only been about 4 or 5 small updates for 2142 in a year and why MMORPS get huge, sweeping updates pretty frequently. They do it because they know their revenue stream stops if their player base stops. Whether the game is good or not is an open question, but I wouldn't be so dismissive of a model that can allow a game true longevity. Anyway, http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/b...ld-heroes.html Quote:

Re: Look what was in the NY Times today
You do have a good point there, Zoraster, but I think that there has to be a balance between making money and making games. I'm not a huge fan of the in-game advertisements (though I think 2142 actually does a decent job with them, and they're also useful in a "There's a guy over by that Intel billboard" sort of way), but for a free game you can't complain about that.
I do have an issue with the pay-for-perks model of gaming. This just means that I will choose not to play those types of games, as I believe that how strong your character is should be defined by your skill or the amount of time you've put into the game, not how big your real-life wallet is. I can't really complain about the "dumbing down" other than to say that the complexity is one of the things I like about 2142, so, once again, it won't be a game that appeals to me. It is important to keep perspective, however. EA are allowed to release games which I don't want to play. I am sure that many people will play BF: Heroes, and I take no issue with that. I won't be one of them. |
